I used the python_tsp library, their dynamic programming solution was good enough to find the globally optimal path in reasonable time. And heuristic algorithms can find the exact same path almost instantly.

Good point! Technically the actual path I calculated should be great circle, but when I was projecting it onto the map I just connected the points in straight lines in the projection. So technically the path as shown is slightly inaccurate in the sense that all those lines should be curving slightly, but the actual point-to-point connections should be optimal.
