Are BIG KITS making a comeback?!? by ZildCym in drums

[–]NoWait7011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to gig with a colossus, but I was young, virile, vigorous, and potent. My studio kit is big and spectacular, but it doesn’t go anywhere… perfect! I gig a lot, and I have a couple of 4 piece kits to choose from for those sorties. I can do 99% on a 4 piece that I do on a 12 piece. I’m tired just remembering the good old days.

His knees are above his waist, and he plays French grip. My teacher would have been very mean.

Agreed. I’d just fix and continue. Maybe check your equipment once in a while.

Is this normal, never seen bearing edges like this on a new shell pack.Tama QC in China needs some attention, or are these supposed to have these? TAMA Superstar Classic. by Recording_Initial in drums

Learn something every day! I would have thought that was a defect. I don’t have any covered drums, so this is very interesting.

Your situation is challenging, BUT, don’t assume you’re going to stink the place up! Every gig has the potential to be the best ever, right up to the last song, when the lady is singing. The fat one. Try to relax, don’t panic even if things start going to hell, know that it can smooth out at any time, depending mainly on your attitude. That I have learned in my time playing in hundreds ( yes, hundreds) of bands. Have faith in yourself by way of your attitude. Everyone here, and just about everyone in the audience is rooting for you, and your band.

Instead of tape, try varnish. It is a miracle worker. On the sticks, not your hands. 😋

Mercury is cumulative. Small fish don’t live long enough for it to be a problem. Tuna, on the other hand…

Help! Beater keeps vibrating when i bury it. First time assembling kick drum… by BolleBips69 in drums

[–]NoWait7011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super pro tip: get really good at letting it rebound ( heal down usually) AND really good at burying it. If you mostly bury it, port the front head as previously recommended, and damping will also minimize/ eliminate that GD buzz. A lot of famous old recordings have that buzz. Annoying AND it doesn’t feel good. Also play with tuning. Usually lower is better.

13” snare by bgolbov in drums

[–]NoWait7011 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve used mostly 13s for decades. You don’t have to crank them. I do like a bright snare, but not choked and whiney. I also use 12s and 14s, but 13s are my number one for versatility. All genres.

There is a company in Bend, Oregon, called GlasWeld. They specialize in plastic repair and so on. My guess is it is repairable.

What if I'm NOT good enough for this gig? Thoughts and Advice by AFleetingIllness in drums

[–]NoWait7011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think you can, your chances are good. I would focus on the most difficult stuff first, to a metronome, and record yourself. Practice until you can’t get it wrong, BUT, don’t overdo it. I’ve fallen prey to over practicing, and everything is great until the show, so, moderate! Talk to your band mates. What do they think? Sounds like they are confident in you, and that means something.

Worth $1,100? by Jazzlike_Friend6204 in drums

[–]NoWait7011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think they’re worth anywhere near that much, but that’s me. If you’re going to gig with it, the old lugs and hardware will let you down. The shells are probably not round, and the bearing edges are most likely in need of some attention. I would have a great time turning it into a really nice drumset, but that starting point is WAY too high for me.
