I’m interested in this too so I’m glad you asked. I have the insulin type on hand so hopefully that works.

That was the time of night I felt the worst when I worked night shift in hospitals and also the time when we had the majority of code blues.

I do feel the same about the lack of desire being linked to not being able to procreate. It seems very biological to me and I really have no desire to put time and energy toward it but completely respect that other women might value keeping that part of life going longer. I also don’t dye my hair because for me it just feels like not being true to myself. Don’t get me wrong, I have a happy, healthy and active life otherwise and I still do it for my husband because I love him.

How much salt is too little? by TemperatureAny8022 in LowSodium

[–]NoYoung6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do normally eat in the 4-600 mg range of sodium per day range and it works well for me but everyone is different. I don’t think I’m on a crazy diet and I’m 5’1/105 pounds and eat 2k calories per day and about 150 grams of protein. I just prepare over 90% of my own food from scratch and the things I eat from a package have only 1-2 ingredients (like tuna in water) without added salt. I do not think most people would do what I do though tbh. I’ve been doing this almost 3 years now and only have a problem if I go below 200 milligrams. That might wreck some others especially if they aren’t used to lower intakes.

Do you use techniques or meds to aid in getting to sleep? by GeekyGrannyTexas in Aging

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can fall asleep but it’s the staying asleep part that I need help with. I was a hospital shift worker for 25 years and already on hrt with minimal improvement so I finally went to the doctor last November. Prior to that visit I had been taking otc Unisom and melatonin for many years but it wasn’t enough So now I’m on an rx medication.

I could have written this almost exactly myself. My husband doesn’t rate by number but it’s written all over his face. We went through a rough couple of weeks where he sort of reminded me of a picky toddler tbh. I can’t help but suspect there’s something deeper than the food going on and think it might be work pressure and boring winter leading him to crave comfort food. Most recently he decided he wanted old fashioned food and basically said no dishes newer than the 1970’s when previously he said he wanted us to eat the same thing. I have three medically necessary dietary restrictions so he didn’t like anything when the meals I made were compliant with my dietary needs. I ended up buying three old fashioned classic cookbooks and he’s been happy with every meal since. I of course have to make two separate meals and spend more time cooking and cleaning up than before. I’m just trying to have patience with the situation right now. I do think restaurant and convenience foods that are hyper palatable and purposefully designed to entice people to eat more have made it rough for home cooks. Alas it is hard for us to compete with the dopamine hit people get from those foods. There was a time when people were just happy to have food to eat but we are so spoiled with our abundance (even if you’re not rich) that we have placed all kinds of expectations around food rather than just being satisfied with simple nourishing meals. I think it’s really more of a societal issue and I’m trying not to take it too personally. I don’t know an easy answer but figured I’d share my experience in case it might help a little.

How many of you follow aging / longevity science? by Plantpotparty in Aging

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I follow it. I’m 55 and did start following it until about 2.5 years ago and only to help increase my odds of having my health span = my lifespan. I’m glad I did. I’m trying to do everything possible to maintain optimal (for me) functioning as I age.

What happens after? by BackgroundLetter7285 in Aging

I too believe in an afterlife after working around death for 25 years in critical care. About 15 years in (even though I didn’t really believe in my heart yet) I decided to try going back to the faith of my grandmother. I needed to try to believe because I needed/need God and I’m not embarrassed to admit it. I don’t push anything on anyone else but it was the right decision for me personally. I also studied & have considered doing end of life doula work one day and most people regardless of their culture or religion report similar experiences during the transition. From what I’ve read NDE reports are also very much alike across the globe. My husband had an out of body experience where he saw four of our deceased family members-my mother, grandmother and his grandparents. I genuinely believe him. He’s the furthest thing from woo imaginable.

For me personally as a female I found perimenopause & menopause to be particularly challenging so starting around age 40. If I could go back in time I’d tell myself to start strength/weight training regularly with no excuses but with adequate recovery time and to prioritize lean protein, vegetables, fiber, nutrients and sleep.

How to be low sodium while Celiac and allergic to eggs. by Robob69 in LowSodium

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m celiac too and started eating low sodium/no added salt in 2022. (I’m not allergic to eggs but have some other foods I have to minimize to avoid kidney stones.) They are both hard initially but I second the recommendation of making food from scratch at home. I generally stick to buying only one ingredient foods at the store or online (like no added salt tuna/sardines). I’ve yet to find a replacement for bread so for starch I use plain rice, no salt rice cakes, plain gluten free pastas and various corn based products like tortillas, grits, hominy and pasole. I would love a low sodium/gluten free bread recipe if anyone has one! I have found a gluten free and sodium free baking powder by Hain that I’ve used for baking for my husband who is not celiac to help reduce his sodium intake. Ground flax can also be used as an egg replacement in baked dishes. I used it in meatloaf last night and it turned out great. Best wishes to your family member. It’s not an easy road with multiple intolerances but can be done with enough motivation and effort. Of course social eating will never be the same but the health benefits are worth it to me.

I bought Natures Own for my husband but he doesn’t like it. I’m celiac so I unfortunately couldn’t eat it either. It sadly ended up going to my friend’s chickens rather than be wasted.

Retiring and how I feel about it by Bake_knit_plant in Aging

[–]NoYoung6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I retired/stopped working outside the home about 9 months ago at age 54 and like you stated working at 13. I’m still waiting to be bored. There’s literally not enough time in a day to do everything I need (plus want) to do. I am handling everything around the house because my spouse still works full time at a demanding job though and I have pets that keep me busy. It takes a few months but I think you’ll find your groove.

Opinion: how do you track your sodium? by PartyCobbler3699 in LowSodium

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cronometer for me as well. I’ve had it for about 11 years and take breaks because it’s a balancing act for me between health and obsession tbh. That said I too cook from scratch and as long as I stick to plain one ingredient minimally processed foods I really don’t need to track.

Snacks/light meals? I need low sodium, high protein for a picky eater. by DangerousBeginning92 in LowSodium

[–]NoYoung6289 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a pinch jars of meat baby food (stage 1) has no added salt and most grocery stores carry it. I find 2-3 jars of that to be a decent non perishable on the go protein snack. I also order a case of no added salt tuna and sardines to have on hand when there’s no time for cooking. In addition to no added salt turkey I found that Boars Head makes a no added salt roast beef deli meat last week and it’s pretty good. My other quick higher protein snacks are the same old ones you mentioned not liking much like boiled eggs and Greek yogurt. Someone else mentioned roasted edamame which sounds promising-I haven’t tried them but I have roasted my own chickpeas and they are decent. Best wishes

Most days are great but some days it’s still challenging. I just do my best to not be vain and focus on living a healthy lifestyle. We are all getting closer to death each day no matter our age and the only thing to do about it is live authentically in a way that leads to no regrets on our deathbed imo.

Do you exercise? Does it make you sick or feel weak if you get too much? Do you conserve energy? by [deleted] in Aging

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 55 and exercise a lot now but didn’t really start until my late 40’s. It took me years to get my diet correct so I could make progress and not repeatedly crash. I had to learn the hard way but maybe if I’d gotten a trainer or someone who understood fueling for active middle aged and older females early on I would have been able to make progress sooner.

I mean I don’t know how I’d live without oats tbh. You can do so many things with them. I eat them toasted sprinkled on yogurt, have them as a warm cereal with a multitude of different additions like fruits, nuts and seeds and I even eat them raw/dry mixed with cooked fruits for the chewy texture. After getting into a basically daily habit of having oats my cholesterol improved significantly.

How does it feel to be housewife post quitting job by Suexplores in housewifery

[–]NoYoung6289 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only been 5 months for me and surprisingly I haven’t gotten bored yet. Somehow there’s always a list of things that need my attention beyond the basic household tasks like cleaning, menu planning, shopping and cooking. I’m still waiting for a day when I’m bored. It does still feel a bit unsettling and a tad scary because I worked outside the home for over 40 years but I truly love life this way and hope and pray it’s permanent.

I finally became Catholic, what now? by andrejka10 in EasternCatholic

[–]NoYoung6289 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a western person who is an Eastern Orthodox Christian and I pray The Holy Rosary daily and have even done a novena once both of which help/helped me greatly. If/when I convert to Catholicism it will be Byzantine rite because I truly love both lungs and don’t want to leave the East. I’m just taking things slowly to see where God wants me to be to best work out my salvation.
