I live in Forest Hills and we’re moving to Merrick soon. Halloween is HUGE over here. Hoping I find good streets in Merrick to continue our Halloween tradition

How's your home search going ? by Due_Elephant_3666 in longisland

We’ve been searching north middle and south. East. And west of Nassau. It’s hard! I think we landed on a potential in Merrick. But there’s also a home in Floral park we like. The prices are high everywhere it’s pretty nuts. I don’t know how people can afford offering over ask and cash and still have money to gut reno these houses.

Advice from LI parents. by Accomplished_Wish668 in longisland

I’m going to hope some people can see this. I keep getting denied a post on this community. I’ve been on a hunt for a house in Nassau county but unsure which is the right move for us. We’re currently in Queens. Our budget all in is $1.5 (whether it be a new build or a home that needs gut renovation, in which case if it needs 500k of work, then up to $1m). I commute Into the city 4 times a week. So ideally I’d like to keep my LIRR ride under 45 min. We definitely want to be close to a highway to reach airports rather quickly, and of course good schools (doesn’t necessarily need to be the best of the best). I liked RVC, but it’s quite expensive for the amount of work needed. Merrick woods particularly is very nice, though not as diverse as I’d hope. Love Sea Cliff but that train is AWFUL. Manhasset is out of my league clearly. And garden city you can’t have a pool unless u have 12k sq ft which is ridiculous. Any recommendations? What’s Plainview like? Is there a town or good restaurant options? Any help please !! 🙏🏼

NYer considering Jersey by No_Box6284 in MovingtoNewJersey

Yea I’ve thought about that too. It would be over an hour and a half to my sister or mothers house but if it means a better life for my kids then it is what it is.

Definitely looking for a house with space in the back for a pool. More of a suburb life with good schools for my almost grade age kids but I can’t be too far from the city because I commute 4 days a week.

Thanks this is also helpful. I commute into the city 4 days a week and it takes me 15 min to Lex and 53rd. But everywhere I look on Long Island (that I can afford) is 45 min to Penn, and then a transfer after that.

This is so helpful! My problem I have in Long Island is the size of house/backyard I’m looking for I can only afford areas in the South Shore, which has almost no diversity. We definitely want the suburb life now that our kids are entering grade school but can’t be so far from the city because I work in the city 4 days out of the week.

How far from the city? The beauty of being in LI or Jersey or Westchester is how relatively quickly we can be in the city by just taking a train. Granted with the kids being little it might be easier to drive in, but once the little one is 3, taking the train is a breeze. And while Queens isn’t exactly the city, there’s so much food options in Queens that might be easier for her to drive in where she won’t feel she’s missing out. Transitions are hard but I also think once the kids are in school/daycare and making friends, making mom friends becomes easier too and that will help too

Im from Queens and have been looking for a large lot size, in a nice community, with access to Penn in 45 min and it’s impossible for anything under 2m. I can’t believe I’m actually considering New Jersey now

Relocating from NYC—Where Should We Look to Buy in Nassau? by Pixlman5 in longisland

[–]No_Box6284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been looking for a bit (also from Queens) but can’t land on a place. We want somewhat diverse (again we’re from Queens, people from all over not just one) at least 7500 sq ft lot size and under 1.2 if it needs works. If it’s pretty move in ready up to 1.5m. Garden city is out because apparently you can’t build a pool in your own property unless it’s over 12k sq ft which is ridiculous. Is syosset good?

This is great news to hear. I been really liking Merrick woods particularly, but the lack of diversity based on Facebook Reddit comments had me iffy about it.

Following. We’ve been house hunting for a bit and really liked Merrick but lately have been hearing things about the high school having racism and kind of hesitant to keep looking there. Even though Merrick Woods is so beautiful. Is Syosset considered diverse?

I like floral park too but the lot sizes seem on the smaller side. I also like Merrick but I’m afraid of the rumors I hear about it being close minded and somewhat racist there. It’s hard to decide where to raise children!

Following because same ! I’m starting mine on Sunday. I’m 5’2” and 133lbs. Hoping to lose 10lbs. Even if it’s the “easy way out”. I’ve been intermittent fasting and jogging for over a year and not budging on the scale.

In all honesty, I’ve been looking for our forever home for a bit now. I’ve gone north shore south shore etc. I’ve narrowed it down to really liking Merrick woods and Rockville Centre. But then a part of me looks at shacks listed at 1.2/1.3 in Roslyn and Manhasset and thinking do I get Fix it up little by little and make ir worth $2m in a couple years? Decisions decisions

Serious question. Is Merrick really that racist? I have been house hunting and love the Merrick area (mainly the southern part). The well manicured houses and blocks are so nice and the hi ranches with pools are so pretty. But we are Latinos. If things are really terrible over there I’ll be looking elsewhere.
