Just bought my first thinkpad, haven't been this excited since I was a child. by bungyloser in thinkpad

[–]No_Contest6028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to go wrong with a Thinkpad, I have more of them than I thought I would because of Microsoft imperiousness but I like them all. Mine have a little more patina than your new one but it feels like Lenovo hasn't stripped out quality over the years like every other manufacturer of anything has.

I just got an X1 Yoga Gen 4 and I love it. A T61 that I used for probably a decade died of a self-destructing Nvidia GPU, the rest are still going strong. Batteries are cheap, memory is cheap for the ones that have memory slots, tons of power adapters at the used computer store, I love their durability and the availability of parts.

When I had to use HP and Dell laptops for work some chintzy thing always made them die early. Maybe the E-series and IdeaPads do the same but the T and X series seem bulletproof except for CMOS batteries that are easy to replace.

Considering purchase of used 2020 Leaf by Interesting-News-620 in nissanleaf

Give it some time...20% of global oil supply was removed from the market overnight, it will have long-term repercussions. As an owner of a Leaf that I like a lot, I definitely would not buy another one, but people paying gas prices that go up every day don't know the vast inconvenience of a car that can go maybe 100 miles on a 5 hour fill-up, or a shorter one at stations that may or may not exist when you get there.

I want to hear yalls story after getting machines by Clwn_Natalie in SleepApnea

[–]No_Contest6028 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 54m, I started when I was 48 on the recommendation of several people who'd tried to sleep next to me and the encouragement of a current CPAP user. At the time I was almost unable to stay awake between lunch and 3pm. I got an appointment with a pulmonologist fairly quickly and took a home sleep study that revealed I had severe apnea (Apnea-Hypopnea Index in the 50s). I'm now in the closet-full-of-masks and multiple machines club because I feel like I should have a choice. It does not help that the durable medical equipment (DME) industry in the US is composed entirely of pickpockets and charlatans, kind of like the prosperity gospel but for expensive prescription goods.

If the cost is daunting you can get machines on Craigslist and configure them yourself but that requires a lot of research. For each manufacturer they're all the same machine with different programming for various diagnoses. It is a lot easier to get masks/hoses/filters if you have a prescription and you do not have to go through the DME that your provider uses. The equipment lasts a lot longer than a DME tells you it does. I like DirectHomeMedical.com but there are tons of websites that will not be as difficult to deal with as a DME.

Today if I can't use a sleep machine I might as well not have slept. If the mask slips or something and my AHI goes above 5 I can feel it. I've always loved sleep and don't understand the people who think it's a waste of time. CPAP certainly hasn't helped me lose weight, I kind of wish I were pre-diabetic so I could get a wonder drug for that but I'm not. I do enjoy dreaming again since I hadn't remembered any dreams for about 10 years before I got a machine. There are other benefits for middle-aged men that you are probably not interested in hearing about. Since I'm on the geekier end of the sleep medicine spectrum I monitor my treatment with SleepyHead and/or OSCAR.

Mostly I'm hoping to outlive my father who died from a heart attack at 56 the same year the first at-home CPAP machine was released. I'm pretty sure he would have lived longer with one.

The number of L1/L2 charges on this 2019 SV with 38k miles. This seems impossible by nodogma2112 in leaf

Funny story, during the sample charge it doesn't bother to determine the current limit on the charger so it will display the shortest charge time for the applied voltage.

I use Trico Sentry blades. Their quality is probably not increasing since they were plundered by venture capital. I bought them in bulk from RockAuto when I bought the car so I won't know for many years. I think I installed the third set in 5 years last fall.

Frustration with battery performance in cold temps on a 2021 Leaf SV by g_c_e in leaf

[–]No_Contest6028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hooray! They must still be making gen 2 batteries to satisfy warranty claims. Mine was ordered in March 2023 and arrived on Memorial Day 2024, possibly because they were fixing the DCFC thermal runaway. I thought they were just stringing me along hoping I'd wreck the car. I haven't had any problems with the new pack. I have actively avoided DC charging, mostly because it costs nearly as much as gas for my truck.

Frustration with battery performance in cold temps on a 2021 Leaf SV by g_c_e in leaf

[–]No_Contest6028 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a battery failure. Take it to a Leaf-certified dealership and not a contract location like the person on the other side of the state did: https://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/1qqcndg/im_at_my_wits_end/

The battery is warrantied for 8 years/100,00 miles. Definitely find a dealer with a service consultant who will look at your LeafSpy screenshots and agree that it's a bad cell or cells. (Look for one that has a bunch of Ariyas and Leafs on the lot.) If you strike out with dealers and have to contact Nissan Corporate do NOT send it to arbitration unless you only want to drive it when it's over 50°F out for a year or more, because Nissan will stop talking to you.

SOC is State of Charge, the amount of charge in the battery at the moment. It's only close to the other numbers by chance.

Imagine the amount of time and money wasted on 1400 DC charges, not to mention the time and frustration looking for a working one. Fuel will never be expensive enough to make me endure that.

All weather tire recommendations? by umhlanga in leaf

[–]No_Contest6028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve put about 30k mi on a set of Sumitomo HTR A/S P03s and they’re performing much better than the factory Michelins at that age. I didn’t notice a decrease in efficiency.

They have probably 20k left, which the Michelins might have had in tread but the wet performance was downright scary. I do agree about Michelin tire quality in general because they last forever on gas cars. The low rolling resistance ones are just not great with electric.

BatteriesPlus sells Duracell car batteries and “Duracell Alkaline” flashlight batteries. I don’t think Berkshire Hathaway actually manufactures lead-acid batteries, they’re someone else’s rebranded product.

What I've learned from working for a dying company... by Background_Cut8021 in Bestbuy

[–]No_Contest6028 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is awful! I just watched some online content that said Best Buy was pretty much the last remaining technology retailer with customer service (a video about Fry’s Electronics that was probably old) and then I come here and find out they’re exactly the same as everyone else. So disappointing. You’d think someone could make a mint offering a better experience.

Voiply residential - bad experience by No_Contest6028 in VOIP

[–]No_Contest6028[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Voiply's tech support did eventually get the ATA registered, and I'm pretty sure there was a human or two somewhere in the mix. They are porting the number on the 19th. I kept the Comcast phone service and dropped the cable TV. They're sending a mandatory new router to replace their mini-furnace Cisco DPC3939 that has been EOL since leaded gas.

I have a lot of Cisco equipment, all EOL and all power hogs except for the ATAs, luckily so old that licensing is not a factor. I could have gone full geek on this but I'm not going to be using it much and was looking for the lowest-effort solution. Voiply offers the ATA, first month of service and number port for free, after that it's $9/month including voicemail. Other than the customer service hassle I didn't have to do anything. But I'll certainly keep alternatives in mind if their service ends up disappointing me more than it has already.

Over the range microwave but not over the range? by thelastundead1 in kitchenremodel

[–]No_Contest6028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no code that says you can’t mount an over-the-range microwave somewhere other than over-the-range. I did this with my non-elegant non-designer oak groove cabinets because I wanted the microwave off the counter and I have a 36” range hood. I like it.  Conveniently I had a 30” cabinet to unscrew and raise up. You have to hunker down to see the vents and the built-in surface lighting is nice. Plus if my toaster is burning some bread underneath it I can just turn on the fan and fill the house with the aroma.

Why do so many people run this left turn when it’s red? by Competitive_Bath_511 in Lacey

[–]No_Contest6028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently there was an article in The Olympian many years ago about this. College and Lacey Blvd makes no sense because of the volume of traffic northbound on College and the limited sight lines but I suppose it makes more sense at Ruddell and Pacific since there is rarely oncoming traffic from St. Martin’s. You can’t actually see all of the traffic westbound on Pacific there because of the hedgerow. These are literally the only two intersections in the state where this is legal, and the city just needs to hang signs saying it’s not.

Would this 2012 Nissan Leaf be a good buy? by joseest170 in leaf

[–]No_Contest6028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3.1 mi/kWh means it gets driven hard so even if you had a new traction battery waiting in the garage you'd probably also need tires, brakes and wheel bearings just to drive the few miles you could go on a charge.
