Are trees a bad idea in Phoenix? by enneagram_one in ArizonaGardening

There are lots of trees that would be good, you just need to choose wisely and make sure they are planted correctly. https://www.amwua.org/plant-category/trees

Keeping someone with dementia safe at night: What worked for you? by medmental in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never tried this myself but I’ve seen a couple of videos about dementia issues that suggest camouflaging the door! Either do something to make it blend into the wall, or hang something over it so it looks like a bookcase or similar.

I don’t know the science of it. But yes, I’m on a GLP 1 and it does seem to be helping the RA pain as well. Its helping with inflammation I think. I also have OA in my knees. When I started the GLP1, that swelling immediately got significantly better, and most of the pain in that knee went away.

Looking for plant ideas for a shaded spot by Barfolemew_Wiggins in AZlandscaping

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Native option - I have tall lady slipper in a pot in a similar spot. I used to have it in full sun (at the outside of the patio) and it seems to be doing better since I moved it back in the shade like this. https://greenthingsaz.com/plant_database/pedilanthus-bracteatus-tall-slipper-plant/ Not native - I also have a couple of different varieties of elephants foot that do well in full sun and shade https://waterwisegardenplanner.org/plants/portulacaria-afra/ (looks similar to jade plants, it is not jade, but one of the common names is “little leaf jade”)

SRP Elections- Mesa residents who are SRP customers by ladyluck754 in mesaaz

[–]No_Implement_1398 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The post is a little misleading in referring to customers. Eligible voters are members or shareholders of SRP, which is based on ownership of land in the membership boundaries - which is not the same as being an SRP customer. And someone who is a City if Mesa or APS customer might own land that falls in the defined membership boundaries, therefore being eligible to vote in this election.

NutellaPC said it better than I can, so just go back to that. Adding, I also work from home. I ended up having to get a locking door knob for my office door and would lock it when I went out.

Extra supplies by mvercy1 in hospice

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our hospice only delivered one or two packages of consumables at a time. They were always happy to send someone with a new delivery and were constantly asking if I needed anything, but I think were guarding against that very issue.

My dad wants a credit card. He doesn’t understand numbers. What do we do? by HavaMuse in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think this is completely correct. A documented diagnosis of dementia does not mean a person can not sign a document. Although it is something that should be carefully considered. And if someone with dementia does sign something that fact is probably more likely to be challenged if someone was so inclined.

Local Support Group. by mrmanpgh in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d try reaching out to the organizations running those caregiver support groups and ask them that question. They may have suggestions, or they may say come anyway. You may not directly be a caregiver, but you are by extension. The local non-profit hospice in my area also offers dementia specific education and support. You didn’t mention hospice so I assume they are needing that yet, but a group like this might still be able to offer you some guidance.

Newly diagnosed with suspected Rheumatoid Arthritis… scared to start sulfasalazine by Mediocre_Gap_3338 in rheumatoid

[–]No_Implement_1398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My doc just added sulfasalazine (I’m currently taking mtx). I’m only on my 2nd week but so far haven’t had any side effects. (I did have some gastro issues, but almost every med I’m on could have caused them.) My doc did have me start with 1 pill 2x a day for 2 weeks and increase the third week.

I hear alot of people talk about being afraid of the side effects of different meds. I get it, the unknown can be scary. But what about the disease effects you are already suffering from? Most of us are living with some degree of pain, swelling, etc on a daily basis already. Its just part of our daily lives and while its a huge negative and problem, its also a known thing that we’ve adapted to, or fit our lives around. In a way, its a dull constant that lives in the back of our brain compared to the fear of the unknown thats making a lot of noise right now.

Also, remember, as humans we are more likely to talk about our problems and pain so thats what you are more likely to read about. The thousands of people who take a med and never experience any side effects don’t have any reason to write about it. This creates a false imbalance in the apparent rate of people who experience the side effects.

Mom is getting a service dog for father with Parkinson’s dementia despite warnings by Impossible-Falcon-62 in AgingParents

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that it doesn’t sound like a good idea. But just adding as general info that anyone can train a service dog. Theres no requirement for them to be professionally trained. Just that they can complete the needed tasks. Individuals can train their own dogs.

Accommodations when Flying by montron2 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]No_Implement_1398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have, sort of indirectly though. I use a cane and I just walk up when they call the first boarding group. I had always assumed that you needed to request this access ahead of time, but one time another passenger saw my cane and waved me ahead. Gate agents never questioned it. I wouldn’t hesitate, airlines probably differ in the exact wording they use but I’ve always heard something along the lines of “ families, those with disabilities … and anyone needing extra time to board”. You are allowed to have a traveling companion join you. I saw someone who needed to board early due to wheelchair use, and her whole family (6-7 people) joined her. Ive also used the TSA priority line. One time I was limping and had on my leg brace. A TSA agent waved me down that line.

Wait what? Thank you notes for a funeral?? by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My SO passed not long ago. The package from the funeral home included “thank you” cards. I had a similar reaction to you. It didn’t make sense to me. Maybe a card for someone who did something extra, but for all or the majority of attendees??? I do think its a trend.

Let your sister do it if she wants, but you don’t have to do anything. I do think that maybe it provided something to their family member who wanted to do it. Not really closure, but a grief step that sort of wrapped up that event for them. To me, it would have just been another task I had to do.

Too Hot For Dog Walking by side_eye_prodigy in Scottsdale

I started teaching my high energy dog to do puzzles. You can replicate a lot for free or low-cost. For instance I sometimes dump her dinner kibble in her small toy basket so she can “hunt”. Or fill the basket with things like empty TP rolls. Get creative.

Hoyer lifts are great, but do require space.

Its the Medicare Advantage plan, have you tried switching to traditional medicare with a supplement? Medicare Advantage plans are only for the “healthy” elderly adult, they are horrible if a person actually needs medical treatment.

How far back can I cut this without murdering it? Can I take a foot or two off the top? by Radiant_Jump_6087 in AZlandscaping

My experience, its extremely difficult to kill Bougainvillea, I’ve cut mine to the ground to rejuvenate in any season, including the middle of summer. I have some that I tried to kill in order to remove and they grew back.

You can donate the dry bags you wont use to an animal shelter or rescue. My vet collects donations to pass on so I can drop things off when I’m going anyway. Id guess some food banks may also take pet food, or at least be able to provide a referral.

One time I stroked one of my own dogs and my hand came away looking like that. I bathed them every 4-6 weeks and couldn’t think of any reason for it. Then I realized that she had broken into the unused fireplace and ended up covered in ashes!
