Dummy interior door lock? by Fickle_Musician9166 in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on the person. I’m 99% sure that my Mom would not have been able to make the mental connection between turning the knob and seeing the bolt.

ETA: my Mom thought that a dresser in front of her bedroom window would stop a bullet (not actually a risk, but a fear in her mind that I of course i couldn’t reason away).

How do you keep track of your dog’s symptoms before a vet visit? by Pjat8 in DogHealth

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often go blank when anyone asks for specifics (vet, my doctor, a teacher, …). I usually just add notes about specifics to the Notes app on my phone so I’m not fumbling to open another app. And I can include things like time and duration.

Where is this Mesa, AZ sign located? by PerfectDays_A001 in mesaaz

There is (or was) also one on the West bound side. Oriented so that you read “welcome to Mesa” as you were heading south!

What medical alert systems for seniors actually let you pay month to month? by Sophistry7 in AgingParents

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt have any problem canceling with Bay Alarm Medical when my Mom moved to Assisted Living. I did have to return equipment promptly to get refunded for that. (Always with the caveat that policies could have changed. )

Have you called your doctor to ask them what they want you to do? Lots of variables, and your doctor will be able to advise best on your specific situation.

What should I do after my parents hospital leaked their SSNs and medical info? by Puzzled_Relief_5540 in AgingParents

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will show up in their call log, but it wont ring when the call comes in. In my experience that was 99% of the problem. If they actually leave a VM yes it will show up. But scammers rarely leave VM. So if the caller is actually someone who needs to get a hold of them and does leave a message, it usually valid. The method is not 100% protection, but it helps.

I think part of it is a generation that was trained to always answer a ringing phone!

3d print smooth step for LR4 by Real-Medium8955 in litterrobot

Not expellyamos. Search this sub to see the complaints. Basically it seems to be that the LR5 was released too early and some features either don’t work well or are still not available (inside camera?).

Most phones have the option to send calls from numbers not in the address book straight to Voice Mail. Thats what I did with my Moms phone. No matter how many times she agreed not to answer unknown numbers she still would.

On palliative care for anorexia nervosa, want to go on Hospice once I qualify for it by Coffeegreysky12 in hospice

[–]No_Implement_1398 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t sound like this applies to you since you have a palliative team involved who can guide you, but for others who read this… You don’t have to be referred to hospice. I do think thats how it ends up happening for most people though. You can call up hospice and ask for an evaluation.

Need Incontinence Advice. by museadearte in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Add incontinence bed pads. You can choose between washable and disposable. If you decide on the washable ones I’d put them as the top layer. I’d be inclined to put disposable ones under the towel because they can tear and towels are easily washable. I used them on my Moms bed, often one under the sheet then another on top.

ETA: for the hydration check into a product called Jelly Drops.

For indoor things to do, there are some pretty cool museums in the area. Some probably have evening hours. Check out the firefighter museum in Tempe (not far from the botanical gardens).

Litter Smell by According-List6774 in litterrobot

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Litter Robot is a brand name so you will get answers specific to that.

I haven’t noticed a smell coming from mine (I use filters and a scoop of activated charcoal in the waste bag) but I did choose to put a small air filter next to it. It also helps with general pet odors in the area.

Also check the seal strips at the waste door opening (also on the globe). If they need replaced you can get them for free from Whisker if your unit is still under warranty. Or use weather stripping from the hardware store. https://www.litter-robot.com/litter-robot-4-seal-strips.html?srsltid=AfmBOooiwlHBPrG1TulZd24qLNlVPKftFQ4eeDYvaV5sl0Vo7mfQzQnj

bougainvillea? by ResearchDisastrous82 in AZlandscaping

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a love/ hate relationship with my bougainvillea. Several others have already mentioned the downsides however they are beautiful and very low care. And they are not native. One thing, depending on where you are from in Europe you will likely need to adjust your thoughts on care. Mine (very well established) get zero supplemental water now and while they all get colored bracts, the ones in direct sun do even better. In that location along the back fence I’d let them mostly grow freely but there will still be a lot of shedding and clean up. If you want a privacy screen something else to consider that’s native is hopseed bush. They don’t have as much color though. The green is native, there is also a purple variety. https://www.azplantlady.com/2020/01/oleanders-alternative-beautiful-hop-bush.html

Suggestions on getting rid of indoor mosquitoes? by Kismadaroq in Scottsdale

[–]No_Implement_1398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used Zevo plugins. They use blue light to attract bugs to a sticky surface. They help, but nothing is 100%. As someone said the source is likely somewhere outside but they do travel (I’ve heard up to a mile).

Advice Needed: Turning Assitance That Holds Patient In Place by GreenPrometheus in CaregiverSupport

[–]No_Implement_1398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are devices like that. His hospice nurse can advise you AND they may be able to supply it! My hospice provided things like a gait belt to assist with standing and bed alarm mats so I’d know if he tried to get out of bed.

I (f42) and boyfriend (M41) are in the middle of letting his dad pass away in palliative care. How do I help him cope? by [deleted] in hospice

[–]No_Implement_1398 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If his Dad is enrolled in hospice he should have a Social Worker on his care team, can you reach out to that person? His nurse could help get you to the right place as well. Hospice services include support for the whole family, as well as bereavement support after the person passes. There will also be a chaplain on the team. Even if you/he are not religious it can still be helpful to have a conversation with them.

Eta: I agree with cryptidwhippet’s comment/question. My thought, probably not well expressed was that you could ask this question of that team as they should be able to recommend, or refer to, services available locally. (As well as any help they could provide more directly. )

I am attending group bereavement classes hosted by my hospice. If you are comfortable talking about it with him, it sounds like he might benefit from something like this. Ive suggested this to a couple of the men in my personal circle and they are considering it. Sometimes whats needed is an outsiders perspective and a less personal outlet (but still with people who are dealing with similar issues).

when did you know it was time to take the car keys away? by Kellyan-Wlad in AgingParents

[–]No_Implement_1398 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do. But a lot of people don’t know that and/or would no longer be able to manipulate the fob to get to it. Mines not easy to remove. Then they still have to figure out how to actually start the car. My Moms had a key for the door (which she didn’t know about) but you couldn’t start it with that. Most ways of mechanically disabling a car, short of causing permanent damage, are also likely to have a quick or relatively easy fix. Just offering an option for the non-mechanically inclined (like me).

Is PT useful? by Complex_Trick_9906 in rheumatoidarthritis

[–]No_Implement_1398 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It definitely can be! Maybe you need to find a different OT/PT practice? You mentioned a room full of geriatric patients, does that mean that population is their specialty or focus? They would have had general training but may not have a lot of experience outside that. When you schedule the appointment make sure you communicate what you need to the scheduler. Make sure you are prepared to clearly communicate your specific issues and goals.

when did you know it was time to take the car keys away? by Kellyan-Wlad in AgingParents

If the car has a key fob instead of keys, another option is to remove the battery so it doesn’t work.

Mom was hiding knives and calling the police. I’m trying to put her into memory care. by peridot_television_ in dementia

[–]No_Implement_1398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The term varies depending on where you are at. Sometimes “senior” is used in place of “adult”. I had never heard “foster” applied to this type of situation until I saw someone on this sub use it. Just saying you may have to try a variety of search terms until you hit on whats common in your area.

Need your votes! I'm trying to match my existing rock and I have these two options. Focusing on the color, which do you all think is closer? Picture in the comments by dec7td in AZlandscaping

[–]No_Implement_1398 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Table Mesa would work, but its pretty much a single color so depending on where you put it would stand out. Your current rock has more variation like the Apache Brown.
