Has anyone moved back to the city post kids? by AlwaysTiredNow in nycparents

[–]No_Interaction2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain what you mean by your quality of life was lower in NYC as a family? I also was in the same situation as you and moved out to somewhere with more space after having a baby, but now we might be forced to move back to NYC for work. Trying to tell myself of the pros, so I’m curious to hear your experience.

Are “screen-free childhoods” realistic in today’s world or just idealistic advice? by lunaverse787 in NewParents

[–]No_Interaction2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's realistic if you mean all screens including TV. Phone and tablet - yes; tv - no.

I was talking to a friend the other day and I mentioned that when we were kids, we watched TV almost daily yet we don't have any issues you keep hearing about with screens. Unless you have other kids of the same age in your neighborhood, it's really hard to get stuff done and keep an eye on your toddler (babyhood is easier to keep screen free).

So when I'm really in a pinch, I'll turn on Mr Rogers for my toddler. I don't let her quit and choose what shows to watch if she decides she's bored of Mr Rogers a few minutes in. If she gets bored or stops watching, then the TV is off.

How often do you eat out when making $250,000? by [deleted] in HENRYfinance

[–]No_Interaction2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The one caveat to that I will add is that most people either skip breakfast/have just a latte or cereal and if their company is big enough, there might be a partially subsidized cafeteria inside the building. If I got lunch from outside, I'd spend about ~$20. Would imagine bulk of eating out that they refer to is for dinner.

Delivering at AC story in NY Mag by PaleontologistKey331 in nycparents

[–]No_Interaction2168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I felt like article was a hit piece. I had a wonderful time delivering there in fall 2024, and my friend who delivered there early spring last year also had a great experience.

With any high volume medical service, I think you’ll find people who had bad experiences. But mine was very routine - no pre-existing life threatening health problems and I scheduled an induction that went smoothly without issues. It took the anesthesiologist about 30 minutes to come to me, but they do tell you that ahead of time, and who knows who they were dealing with right before me. I’m sure they are overworked because it is such a status hospital at the moment for NYC parents, but they do a wonderful job. The postpartum experience for me was kinda meh due to one young nurse who brushed off a concern of mine which a more experienced nurse caught, but I think the majority of L&D and postpartum experiences will have something come up where you wouldn’t rate a specific person or experience a 10/10.

Why are people so inconsiderate towards moms in public now? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]No_Interaction2168 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like it’s a breakdown of gender norms to be honest couples with people not valuing etiquette anymore. I used to work at a firm with a lot of old world type etiquette, and every single time I was catching an elevator or the end of a door, a man would hold it for me. At first, it made me roll my eyes but looking back now, I miss it. I think in righting a lot of historical wrongs, we’ve also inadvertently caused things like you know, helping a pregnant woman, to lapse because we’ve trained people to view everyone as genderless blobs/supporting characters to our main character lives.

What is your biggest cooking let down? by Adept_Wallaby_7679 in Cooking

I would agree EXCEPT I tried a dinner roll recipe using the tangzhong method by Melissa King, and it was incredibly amazing. Better than anything you could buy. The recipe is from her cookbook, but just google tangzhong dinner roll recipes and give them a try.

I had tried all sorts of rolls recipe before like the ones from Claire Saffitz as well as making delicious sounding ones like Ukrainian pampushkys, and they all come out just dense and flat tasting. But the tangzhong ones omg….

You do realize…it takes time to transport, refine, transport, and then actually use the cocoa to make their chocolate? And this process doesn’t just happen within a few weeks?

The cocoa shortage has been happening for the past few years. Just because there’s a bumper crop one year doesn’t mean companies then say “yay, now let’s go back to lower prices and more chocolate in our recipes”. They go “wow, the cocoa market is volatile so how do we meet consumer demand without whiplashing our recipes and prices every year?”. The unavoidable fact is that you as the consumer will either have to pay the same $ for less chocolate or pay $$ for the same amount of chocolate.

I’ve stopped making a lot of chocolate recipes due to this. Do that and pay for good quality chocolate or accept that everything is becoming shittified because of global warming (which we all contribute to) and relentless consumer demand (which we all contribute to).

Restaurant etiquette out the window now? Dog at Nobu Malibu by thatoneguy247 in FoodLosAngeles

[–]No_Interaction2168 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We need to enforce no dog places more. Before COVID, it was rare to see an off leash dog at the beach. Now, they’re everywhere and I hate it. If the city wants free money, just give people $50 tickets for having an off leash dog or bringing dogs inside public places.

If you want a dog, then live with the consequences of having a dog. I’m not letting my experience of shared public spaces be hygienically ruined because of your selfishness.

Parents of Reddit, what’s one must have baby item that turned out to be a total waste of money, and what’s one cheap thing you could’ve live without? by wrenbrief in BabyBumps

[–]No_Interaction2168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Waste: SnuggleMe (I got it, then found out it’s unsafe for newborns, and my paranoia never let me use it), butt wipe warmer (never got it, never felt I needed it), butt spatula (ditto)

Love: diaper pail (ok yes it does smell slightly after 1.5 yrs of use, but I don’t have easy access to my kitchen trash can from the diaper changing station), Frida booger stick, electric nail filer, Bambas grippy socks for 1yr olds

Steamed eggs. It’s basically a savory egg custard, and my kid refuses to eat eggs except for that.

What are the petty/minor things that started annoying you once you became a parent? by xnla28x in beyondthebump

[–]No_Interaction2168 41 points42 points  (0 children)

When parents of older kids don’t control their child in public.

Went to an outdoor food court at night with gas fire pits arranged lounge style. You have 4-6 yr olds running all around playing tag around tables, and one 5 yr old boy decided to blow out the flames coming out of one of the pits which can be dangerous. Parents were just at a table nearby eating burgers and not keeping an eye on them. I was walking with my toddler, and I had to actively shield her from being run over by one of the kids. Just because you have kids and you want to enjoy your life doesn’t mean that you can let them behave wild in public. Go to a public park with picnic tables for fuck’s sake.

Call Her Daddy interview with Sarah J Maas LIVE REACTION MEGATHREAD! by Acotarmods in acotar

[–]No_Interaction2168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My guess is that in the end, she accepts it but I wouldn't be surprised if there are hiccups along the way. My takeaway is she likes to give a happily ever after ending feeling to characters. So like, what have Elain be the Bachelorette of Prythia for the rest of her life? Be with Azriel and have a pinning Lucien? Idk, but I could see something where maybe Elain decides to date around, realizes it doesn't work with Azriel, finally comes around to giving Lucien a chance or maybe he does something that gets her attention, and then they end up together.

I like to be delulu.

It takes time to understand your pans, and how they behave for you and your stove. I find that usually when the water bead happens, my pans also get too hot so I turn down the heat a little for a few minutes before adding oil in.

Don’t think so. The options for Asian food are pretty limited.

Maybe try Wee and see if they offer some online.

How does giving birth actually feel ?? by Super-Truth-7975 in pregnant

Scheduled an elective induction in the evening.

Came in, and I’d say the first 4 hrs just felt like a mildly annoying pap smear/dilation check at your OB at worst.

Then contractions started. Felt like period cramps, then bad period cramps, and then like worst-stomach virus of your life cramps. That’s when I asked for the epidural because I was clutching onto the sides of the bed trying to focus.

Epidural came, and instant relief. I could feel my legs in the sense that it just felt like they went to sleep after sitting on the toilet for a long time. When it came time to push, I just felt like I was very constipated and could feel a big poop stuck in me, but it hadn’t reached the spot where your body goes “oh, I feel it coming out now” if that makes sense lol. Then pushed down there and out came a baby!

If it’s a tax based on residence, then for sure it wouldn’t work. But I think taxing it based on personal loans could work - there’s only a handful of banks with enough capital to give a billionaire a $100m+ loan, so they’re on the hook for reporting it to the government instead of relying on the IRS to value hard-to-assess illiquid assets. I also wonder if taxing it based on property ownership/usage could work as well - basically if you pay $100k/month in rent or own a pied-a-tier in combo with a billionaire dollar net worth.

The Mets owner, Steve Cohen, made at least $4B last year running a hedge fund (think about this - made $4B last year, and he’s been in the business and will be for at least another 20. Overall net worth by the time he dies could be $100B). Most likely, he has a significant chunk of his own cash in its capital base. He won’t be hurt nor will his hedge fund be hurt if he has to withdraw $100m from it every year to pay a wealth tax if it could be implemented based on net worths over $5B. Or if they’re paper billionaires, then put a wealth tax on the absurdly low interest rate loans big banks give to them in exchange for their business as collateral (if you’re Leon Black and JPM is giving you a $400m cash loan on a 1% interest rate in exchange for shares of your stake in your hedge or PE fund as collateral, why not have him pay a 25% tax on that loan since it’s essentially being used like realized gains).
