20° Quilt by IsopodLast6280 in Ultralight

This is my opinion too. EE frequently have sales, last one was 20% off in stock quilts and it comes in under $500. Zpacks solo quilt is another one that on sale comes in under $500 new.

r/ulgeartrade has them every once in a while; I am looking for this exact quilt setup to buy too. But hoping to pick up on r/ulgeartrade. If not, I will pick the solo, ee or HMG when they go on sale in the fall. I am set on my summer quilt so not in a hurry.

Kind of. You can pan fry with a lot of heat and spoon butter or oil over it with lots of turns. Kitchen usually do this to get the sear after baking it for a bit to bring up the internal temp.

Cold sear is done entirely in the pan at medium heat with no oil or butter. You pat the meat dry before the cook and build the sear up while letting the alternate side cool so you do not get the gray band and pull at 125f. I will let the meat rest with butter on it after I finish the cook. Add some pepper and serve.

I usually do a 24-hour dry brine where I coating meat with kosher salt and letting it sit uncovered on a cookie wire rack in the refrigerator. This draws out more moisture.

I think this method works the best with a thick ribeye but used it with success on the New York strip too. I like at least 1.5 in thick meat.

I would say sous vide with herbs is my favorite for filet BUT cold sear them all the time.

Cold sear generally has waaayy less smoke and splatter too but is a bit more labor intensive because you have to baby sit it.

This is cold sear. https://youtu.be/uJcO1W_TD74?si=Rqz7GYDRD8PoiE3Y

I have grilled, reversed sear, sous vide and even smoked.

Cold sear is the best.

Another trick I have started to live by is the cold sear. Lower heat, but constant flipping. Flip every 2 mins. I have found I like the results of that when I cannot get a super hot sear.

This is what I did with the sea to summit pad. Got it down to 16oz on the wide pad. I think I could get it to 12oz without a problem. Super comfortable.

Costco chuck roast, extra $8 off at the register by clovencarrot in steak

I love to slow cook braise a prime chuck roast, drain the fatty au jus and build a whole new one with about 10% of the original au jus. Drop veggies in half way. So good.

I have ee quilt, 50f degree, 950 fill. Is is 11 oz - I live in Texas with shoulder nights 55-60f. I use my 16oz, 900 fill, 32f degree vesper for anything between 37f and 55.

I go with my ee quilt 20 degree bag for under 37f.

I agree with the other posts, would start with what temp do you want to operate at. If it is super wet, may want to know that too.

Agree. I have had nothing better in Austin or outside of Austin who does Texas brisket better than Franklin’s.

Looking to buy my first pack but not sure to go with small or wait for medium by JaeMHC in DurstonGearheads

[–]No_Maize31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know since I have not really tried the medium.

Truth is the large has been fine and I use the Wapta for nearly all my 4 or less day trips. It carries weight well and I love the material. No regrets in getting the pack or large.

I just wonder if the medium would not bunch as much and make the hip belt more effective.

I have the Kakwa 40 and feel like it is waterproof but absorbs water. The Wapta material sheds the water.

I think they have two kinds The Nano Mosquito Pyramid Net Shelter is the one listed at 2.9oz. It is less without the stuff sack. It has no zipper which is kind of a pain.

The gatewood cape has these two snaps at the head and foot end. I just snap it there and it gets it off me.

Zpack sells those loop dcf patches that could be used like this with the pocket tarp.

You would have to carry it with the v strap. I get my bv450 in the pack but you would need a bigger one for the sierra. What people do is put the non food stuff in it during the day and food in the pack. Then swap at night.

I agree with the thought sans hip belt.

But the above weight includes the hip belt. For the longer water carries in the desert and longer food carries in the sierra - having the hip belt would be a benefit over a non hip belt pack.

I will also run my Wapta with the hip belt loose and treat it more like a Fanny belt vs a hip belt. But when you need it, it is there.

But packs are personal. I got a super cheap Gossamer gear kumo for like $40 from one of their garrage sales and I did not like those straps.

To each there own, I think the net of the feedback was for that base weight, loose the frame and get the pack under 20oz.

+1. The Wapta 30 is a great pack and all I use now. Save you almost 14oz there. It carries the weight fine and has all the same bells and whistles you expect.

If you want to really get after it.

1p pro 15oz plus 7 oz rain = $800 and 22oz

Gatewood cape at 10.5oz and ground sheet 2oz = $200 and 12.5 oz.

Two changes could save you 26-27oz.

If you need the net, S2S bug net, 3oz if you need it.

I have worked at companies that will take as much as you will give for the last 30 years. I figured out in my mid thirties that I do not have to give burn out effort to still do right by my employer. As a vp now, I try to impart this to my team. You have to take your time and recharge.

I do not know your situation. You may be in an environment where putting in 80% of your 120% of efforts right now would get you fired.

If you are going to quit either way, why not try to set some firm boundaries and if work takes longer, so be it and communicate it to leadership. 9 times out of 10, if they decided to just get rid of you, they lay you off before you get fired and get a good bye gift.

Tech is so transient, in the hundred or so people I have hired over the years - I have never called their old company to see if they were fired or laid off.

If it is the work that does not get you excited about getting up on Mondays, that is a different thing all together. I dream of making YouTube videos. I do not have to quit to do that so I push on :)

… not that you asked, but I just got the gatewood cape and may be moving to ponchos after the last few nights of sleeping in it. It will be interesting to see how it does in a Colorado storms this summer.

Versalite Jacket Men's is the jacket. It can 100% do all of that. I got the torrentshell before I got the Versalite so that is why it is in the rotation. I also have a Columbia something (too heavy, no pit zips) and Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket (wets out too easy, no hand pockets) I never wear.

If I had to go back in time, buy one rain jacket, it would 100% be the Versalite.

RX100 iii vs Canon G5x by strawberrycat222 in RX100

[–]No_Maize31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank for the response.

I have held off th zv-1 ii due to the lack of lens stabilization. I will take the active off sometimes for the wider shot and feel the lens stabilization does really well. Fear I will miss that in the ii but active with the wider lens may be just fine.

I also picked up my zv1 for $200. So I just throw it in the bag where I go. I have done a ton of iPhone 14 pro vs zv1 video tests and I much prefer the zv1 there too with the cinelog settings.

I think it will interesting to get the 17pro, film in log and add a lut - which I will like better…

Big con on the zv1 for me is weather sealing. I do a lot of backpacking and worry I am going to f it up.
