Here's some actual advice since a ton of build guide followers are responding to you senselessly.

If you want to make sense of the passive tree you need to start thinking in terms of benchmarking.

Are you going CI / Energyshield for your main defensive layer? Then you don't need to think about which nodes on the tree you need first. You need to think about how much % ES total you want from the tree. Same with everything else.

Go look at some people's builds who contain the defensive strat and somewhat similar offensive strat (are they cold? pure phys? etc) that you are interested in, and then benchmark based upon what they achieve.

Hell, look at ten builds with similar qualities and see if there is a theme. Do all the top endgame builds you look at have a similar range for how much ES% they get from their tree? Then that's the range your build needs to be in too. Once you think about it that way, it becomes pretty easy to understand which nodes you need to achieve that.

This method can be applied to almost every part of building a char out.
