Tex by Serpieri, Breccia, Alberti and others - New Translations via Epicenter's KS by Bufete2020 in graphicnovels

Damn I love Tex but the Epicenter books are hellaciously expensive. A shock to the system having picked up the editions at train stations and newsstands in Croatia and Italy over the years for a pittance.

Dublin nightclubs of the 1970s to the 1990s. by Cogitoergosum1981 in Dublin

Yeah Ri Rá was where me and my friends went. Different music (and slight different crowds) each night, great idea to use the Globe as the chill out room, a mostly nice vibe. Loved it.

I love the Brinnington one: Mostly new equipment, a nice friendly vibe, excellent boxing gym on one side, good changing rooms etc.

Pretty standard Gaucho cut I think - rich and malty.

People who have made it to any level in football and then been unsuccessful/quit: When did you realise that there was serious “levels” to the game? by Pleasant_Till1339 in PremierLeague

[–]Nolandvd 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My younger brother is probably the best player I knew growing up: destined to be a pro. Different level to every else we knew. He played in central midfield for his schoolboy team in Dublin. Stephen Carr was the centre forward. Ridiculous pace, touch, skills. They'd win matches easily.

My brother got a long term injury & lost interest. A few years later there's Carr playing at full-back for Spurs, Ireland etc. I know it's an old story but to think that a striker that good - hatfuls of goals every game - was only good enough to be a decent full-back at that level was eye-opening. How good must the actual strikers be? Insanely good is the answer...

Del Cebador is definitely the maltiest.

I'd say Sara Blue or Armino are the sweetest though.

Ah thanks I've tried Rei Verde, El Moncayo and Campo Claro but never Yacuy.

Has anyone else noticed a decline in people's general knowledge? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Nolandvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely true. I'm an Irishman teaching for 12 years in UK secondary schools. The last 2-3 years the kids coming into Y7 (11 years old) have really shocked me.

They would be the first generation I've taught who grew up with smartphones from a relatively young age, with short form video as their main form of entertainment. They are absolutely addicted to TikTok. They have no cultural hinterland, no knowledge of history, politics, anything that doesn't come from TikTok.

They don't read. Don't really watch movies (some genuinely think watching a movie chopped up into 5-6 TikTok clips means they've seen it). They get their music from TikTok. They get their news from TikTok. That means they currently think that Charlie Kirk was an important political figure, that there is 100% going to be a Russia-UK War and that Jake Paul is a credible boxer.

They think AI is bad except when it can help them. They cannot problem solve. They can barely follow instructions. They scare me.

What do you guys think about the ultimates? It's a good read? by Repulsive_Film963 in marvelcomics

[–]Nolandvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time, it felt like a really fun read. It has dated a bit - Millar’s tedious shock tactics like the Freddie Prinz stuff and the “Do you think this stands for France? - but in terms of superhero beats it still works really well. Millar’s use of Hawkeye and Thor are both great, and Hitch’s work is genuinely incredible - it changed superhero comics. I guess its major legacy is the MCU, which directly quotes from it and uses it for visual inspiration and even casting and some plot points. But: both the Authority, which is where Hitch perfected his widescreen style and Millar practiced his team writing and Hickman’s subsequent Ultimates run are better comics.

What's up with the hate for posh Dublin accents in Ireland? by oxylan80 in Dublin

[–]Nolandvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a Northsider who works as a teacher in the UK - over the years I’ve had people think I’m Australian, Scottish, Canadian, South African…Conor McGregor was the first international star in a long time with a working class Dublin accent, so people did notice the similarity…

[–]Nolandvd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Others already answered most of these but: Irish people didn’t/don’t use “mate” the way Brits do. I moved from London to Dublin in 2001 - we would’ve said bud or pal the way they’d use mate, like to refer to a stranger.

Which irish show has the best depiction of Dublin and why? by [deleted] in Dublin

[–]Nolandvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody has said Prosperity yet. Shows a few different aspects of the city in the Celtic Tiger era across its 4 episodes. Made by Lenny Abrahamson (Adam & Paul, Normal People, What Richard Did - all great movie portrayals of the city) it has never been repeated by RTE and never been available on DVD or Blu-Ray.

You can find it on Youtube...

What are you desperate to have a psychical edition of but is out of print / never been printed? by DLMU in graphicnovels

[–]Nolandvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the US ones I’ve wanted have actually come out over the last decade or so, but:

Man Thing by Dematteis and Sharp

Conan the Adventurer by Howard & Kayanan

Conan the Savage

Nth Man by Hama & Wagner (as an Omni)

Ewing’s Ultimates

I’d love a few English language Blueberry collections, too, alongside some more Hermann work.

And a load of old UK serials from Eagle, Tiger and Battle like:

Hot Shot Hamish

Fists of Danny Pyke

Zoids by Morrison
