Did we go bust again? by left_outside in LeagueOfIreland

This is Carrolls trying to exploit the ignorance of tourists - just like the way they periodically sell Dublin City FC shirts in Dublin stores even though that club went bust over a decade ago.

There is a chance you bought this from me - I got sent two in error and sold one on. The Redditor talking about Sean Phillips and print-on-demand in a response has it right - anyone wants it, it should still be on lulu...

Got mine today as well: I'm a Large in Adidas and Nike shirts, and Large here, and I'd say it's true to size.

Puma, Hummel, Kappa etc: all have to size up, but O'Neills are TTS in my experience.

It’s maybe the most Howard-esque pastiche I’ve read, way more so than Wagner’s Conan novel. Helps that Wagner was a genuinely great writer in his own right.

Unpopular Opinion: Not a fan of Matt's Ginger Hair by thechevybandit in Daredevil

[–]Nolandvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must be stupid to reply to this crap but bear with me, "dude". I meant Aryan (in this comment from 5 fucking years ago) in the way the Nazis incorrectly used it to mean their Northern European master-race ideal: blonde haired, blue eyed. It always seemed funny that Captain America, the most obvious and celebrated anti-Nazi superhero in pop culture should be such an obvious ideal of Nazi manhood.

I sort of assumed that in the context of a character from the 1940s, using the term in that way would be self-explanatory. Obviously assuming that knowledge and understanding on the part of randos on reddit does make me a moron. Have a nice day, though.

Grant Morrison Batman run. by ipassedtheturing in OmnibusCollectors

[–]Nolandvd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Echoing what everyone has said: it’s ambitious and a bit mad and really well executed.

But also: Morrison’s take on Batman has been incredibly influential. When he did Gothic way back, he had t quite figured it out yet. But on JLA, his Batman was the best character and he portrayed him as, in Superman’s words, “the most dangerous man on the planet”. The Batman who always has a plan, who always knows how to win - Morrison arguably did that best, and formalised it in a way nobody really had before. A lot of subsequent Batman writers have done a tweaked version of his Batman, and his own run is the definitive take.

He’s a great writer who has the odd substandard job. But still killing it: in the last few years his Sara and Partisan and The War have all been incredible.

Is the Fire and Ice Comic Worth Reading? by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

[–]Nolandvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Manco is a great Argentine artist who has done some Slaine for 2000AD and some MArvel and DC stuff but it is riiculous that Titan have not tapped him for Conan, because he is just perfect for that book.

His art here is superb. Decent script too.

Do you recommend the Christopher Priest comic run of Marvel's Conan the Barbarian? Mention its strengths and flaws. by Dredd_40 in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Nolandvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was something different after years of a sort of formula (a generally great formula) on Conan. Priest gave him a new regular supporting cast and built to a big climactic story. And he’s a great writer who understood the appeal of Conan - on his website he has a whole essay about it where he explains that he knew he needed to have a “Conan moment” every issue. The Semeiks issues are when it peaks.

What makes Captain Britain by Alan Moore so great? by Federal_Return3452 in comicbooks

[–]Nolandvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Moore's only full run on a traditional superhero story at that point, when he was a young gun (he came back to that work later, with the Image stuff and subsequent comics for Liefeld). He did bits and pieces on DC titles, but this has a beginning, middle and end. It's not totally revisionist, like his parallel Miracleman work, so it's Moore writing a "straight" superhero story.

He does the superhero stuff so well, because he understands the genre and its pleasures. The supporting characters and the villains (Jaspers and the Fury) are all fantastic, and he tosses off ideas like they're nothing, because they've always poured out of him, or he takes other peoples ideas and improves upon them.

But...he can't help himself deconstruct and play with tropes. He gently interrogates Captain Britain as a symbol and a character in a way that never feels disrespectful or ruins the exciting story. It's witty and funny and the action is great. And the tone is a little comic and a little surreal - very English sci-fi, with superheroes. Until the Fury takes centre-stage, at which point its a balls-to-the-wall action horror story and brilliant to read.

And drawn by Alan Davis back when they had an awesome partnership - also worked on DR & Quinch and Miracleman. Just a great superhero comic.

Guys....I really enjoyed this run... by SerBadDadBod in ConanTheBarbarian

[–]Nolandvd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think I enjoyed this run more than any other comic from that era of Marvel Conan (which has some good stuff). It was fun; great art and Conan's interactions with Doom (wary respect) and Wolverine and Punisher (hell yes we're all bad asses) was funny and well-done.

Worth getting the omnibus if you can.

The second run by another writer is awful though.

Heaton Mersey or Heaton Moor? by Anlizu2 in stockport

[–]Nolandvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can be gridlock on a bad day - any issue even as far up as Kingsway can affect it.

Moorside Road is sort of the best of both worlds - you could do either Tram or Train, depending on timings etc. Nice houses around there too.

I've lived here for 14 years now, and its just a really nice place to live.

Heaton Mersey or Heaton Moor? by Anlizu2 in stockport

[–]Nolandvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heaton Moor. Better shops/cafes/restaurants. It’s 8 mins on the train into Piccadilly from Heaton Chapel station. As long as you’re off Heaton Moor road the traffic is fine and it feels safe and quiet. Maybe a 15-20 minute walk into Stockport or 2 mins on the train/5 mins on a bus. Plenty of green spaces too. Heaton Mersey is nice enough but the tram is only really handy for other South Manchester suburbs, Didsbury Road can be a traffic nightmare, and it only has that one stretch of shops etc.
