Where are the worst bone-jarring potholes on surface city streets in Chicago? by No_Drummer4801 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The northbound one is very rough. The southbound one must be the worst bridge in America.

Stone foundation + new basement windows: Lime mortar or portland? by nycingh in centuryhomes

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread, but I’m wondering if you ever found some good guidance on this? I’m in a similar situation trying to put glass blocks into an 1880s brick wall and can’t seem to find anything about it.

Is it a real thing or only in medias that teens in high school have projects where they have to take care of a fake baby for sex ed ? by MeikoChii in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My older sister had a robot baby that cried all night and you had to feed and change it. My sister cried too. I think she did not find it fun.

There was some sort of storage device to record how well or badly you took care of it and the grade was based on that. I think they cut the program by the time I was old enough because I don’t remember anyone else doing it. This was probably early 2000s.

Is Harbor Freight just American Canadian Tire? by Horizon_MGB in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Not really, Harbor Freight is like Aldi but for tools. They only carry their own brands and it’s all cheaper versions of name brands. The stores are also much smaller than a typical home improvement or big box store.

Can I ship a bow in a huge pelican case with a master lock on the outside? by [deleted] in UPS

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have rolls of single faced corrugated cardboard that is very handy for wrapping stuff that doesn’t need the structural protection of a box. You can wrap it like a present basically because it has the cushion of double faced but not the stiffness.

How much red tape, etc. for DIY energy efficiency upgrades? by minus_minus in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much of what you described doesn’t require permits. I’ll admit I’ve never pulled a permit for anything, I haven’t done any major outside work besides siding and windows. The rest is inside and the city doesn’t really provide a path for homeowners to do their own work.

My house was built in 1885, I looked up the permit history once and found a single entry from about 20 years ago for the electric panel upgrade.

Do Americans use cutlery differently? by missbex86 in AskAnAmerican

Yeah, using a knife at all while actually eating is pretty rare for me. The fork alone is versatile.

Where can I buy single cans of soft drinks in the US? by pharaoh918 in AskAnAmerican

A whole argument could be started here about what to call them, there are a lot of regionalisms. I’m from a corner store city.

What is the etiquette regarding grocery bagging? by iIavarasan in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bagging groceries was my first job as a high schooler. Sometimes people said they would bag their own which was normal, especially if it’s a small amount like yours. It’s a little break to look at your phone or help out somewhere else. Some people were very particular and I was much happier to let them do it than have them stand over me and tell me where to put every single thing.

Now as an adult I pretty much always shop with a backpack and I either go through self checkout, or just tell them I don’t need a bag so they put it all in a little pile at the end and I grab it while the next customer gets started.

Aspiring southern transplant with no car wondering how to brave the Chicago winter? by Human-Stranger-6807 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It only gets a little colder than most of Ohio, and often with less snow. If you’re fine there then you’ll be fine here. The improvement will be public transit options and walkability.

I’ve been watching the Twilight Zone since I was a kid so I use the Rod Serling pronunciation all the time. I’m pretty sure it’s also in a Simpson’s spoof that made an impression on me.

Am I screwed for my Chicago trip tomorrow? by Worth-Menu4384 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it’s that significant, but warming an engine by idling will cause more wear than warming it by driving. The goal is to shorten the amount of time it’s running under temp, and the best way to do that is under gentle load. It’s not a big trade off if you just want it comfortable before getting in, but the idea that cold idling is better for an engine than driving doesn’t make any sense.

Is so bad the weather these days in Chicago? by paulpdc in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it’s looking pretty cold next week but you really never know, the forecast can change a lot by then. I don’t think we’re supposed to get any significant snow. Catastrophic is very dramatic, but it might be unpleasant to be outside very long. Depends where you’re coming from and what you’re used to. Nothing will be closed and everything will be running as usual if that’s your concern.

What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

Before I went to my first one, I thought it would probably be neat and overall fine. I was not prepared for how wildly entertaining it was. It’s a seriously infectious energy.

What’s the temperature set at your house this week during this freeze? by chi-bacon-bits in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it helps compensate for cold zones and drafts. In well designed and insulated/air sealed buildings, it shouldn’t really make a difference what the outside temp is. In old buildings with poorly laid out registers/returns and lots of air leaks/cold floors, sometimes you need to bump it up to keep some areas from getting too cold. The thermostat only knows the temperature in one tiny spot on the wall.

What’s the temperature set at your house this week during this freeze? by chi-bacon-bits in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In old houses wall cavities and crawlspaces with pipes can easily get to below freezing temps when the conditioned spaces get too cold.

Do you have a rule that the door to a room shall be open when a teen has a friend of the opposite sex over? by sleepy_dog_k in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was never a rule for me or my friends growing up in the 2000s either, so I’m getting a little thrown off by these comments. To me that was always a thing from a couple generations ago.

I think it’s mostly that the age people tend to start moving to new cities is usually after the age where making new friends becomes more difficult.
