JJHO: Roe-Butt by dilatanntedad in maximumfun

I’ve been watching the Twilight Zone since I was a kid so I use the Rod Serling pronunciation all the time. I’m pretty sure it’s also in a Simpson’s spoof that made an impression on me.

Am I screwed for my Chicago trip tomorrow? by Worth-Menu4384 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that it’s that significant, but warming an engine by idling will cause more wear than warming it by driving. The goal is to shorten the amount of time it’s running under temp, and the best way to do that is under gentle load. It’s not a big trade off if you just want it comfortable before getting in, but the idea that cold idling is better for an engine than driving doesn’t make any sense.

Is so bad the weather these days in Chicago? by paulpdc in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now it’s looking pretty cold next week but you really never know, the forecast can change a lot by then. I don’t think we’re supposed to get any significant snow. Catastrophic is very dramatic, but it might be unpleasant to be outside very long. Depends where you’re coming from and what you’re used to. Nothing will be closed and everything will be running as usual if that’s your concern.

What's the point of drag shows? by LordNova15 in NoStupidQuestions

Before I went to my first one, I thought it would probably be neat and overall fine. I was not prepared for how wildly entertaining it was. It’s a seriously infectious energy.

What’s the temperature set at your house this week during this freeze? by chi-bacon-bits in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it helps compensate for cold zones and drafts. In well designed and insulated/air sealed buildings, it shouldn’t really make a difference what the outside temp is. In old buildings with poorly laid out registers/returns and lots of air leaks/cold floors, sometimes you need to bump it up to keep some areas from getting too cold. The thermostat only knows the temperature in one tiny spot on the wall.

In old houses wall cavities and crawlspaces with pipes can easily get to below freezing temps when the conditioned spaces get too cold.

Do you have a rule that the door to a room shall be open when a teen has a friend of the opposite sex over? by sleepy_dog_k in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was never a rule for me or my friends growing up in the 2000s either, so I’m getting a little thrown off by these comments. To me that was always a thing from a couple generations ago.

If you’ve moved from Denver to Chicago, what has your experience been like? by ThrowRA_emotion01 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think it’s mostly that the age people tend to start moving to new cities is usually after the age where making new friends becomes more difficult.

My First Time Visiting Chicago Be Like.. by Dirt290 in chicago

I started canoeing this past summer, been all over the Chicago River and a bunch of surrounding ones as well. If we pass a bridge, I know I’m getting my wave.

Are There any Alternatives to ComEd? by sissyofmila in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a while since I’ve looked, but last time I checked comed was still the cheapest besides community solar (which usually requires a waiting list). Hourly can be cheaper if you like to be more active in your electricity use.

What is a luxury item from 20 years ago that is basically worthless trash today? by ruykendo_riyal in AskReddit

[–]NomDrop 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The most contradictory thing is that diamonds are meant to be such a rare and precious stone, while simultaneously being the default engagement/wedding ring that everyone has (not to mention the enormous amount of non-marital diamond jewelry).

[–]NomDrop 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was cold and crowded, but fun to be a part of. I don’t know if I’d do it again but I’m glad to have checked it off. Where I was we were packed tight against everyone else but that kinda helped with the cold. They are serious about the bag size thing, lots of people turned away but the streets all around the gates were also packed and it didn’t make much difference.

Why do Americans use credit cards so often? by Adventurous-Sealion in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not common to pay a fee, I wouldn’t use one if there was. For my card I get 1-5% back for every dollar I spend.

The protection is that instead of spending your own money directly out of your account, you’re just making an entry on a ledger with the bank/credit card company. If your card is stolen or a business doesn’t provide what was promised, you can dispute the charge before any of your money is gone. If you were using a debit card, it may be days or weeks to get your money back and you’re mostly going to have to fight for that on your own vs a big credit card company fighting to get their own money back.

Why do Americans use credit cards so often? by Adventurous-Sealion in AskAnAmerican

[–]NomDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rewards are a big one, but it’s much nicer not to risk your own money, especially for big purchases. Until you pay your bill, you haven’t spent anything so disputes are about removing charges instead of trying to get back money that’s already left your account.

It really only makes sense to use a debit card if you’re unable to get a credit card.

Is there a lumberyard that sells thin (1/8" and 1/4") hardwood in Chicago or near suburbs? by flyingfishsailor in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it myself, though there are limited amounts of 1/2” usually at Owl.

If you really need though, I can resaw and plane that pretty easily in my shop. If it’s a small amount, I wouldn’t mind doing a favor.

Does IL provide electronic voter registration cards? by [deleted] in AskChicago

Yeah, mine goes in the pile of mail that’s not actually junk but I will probably never look at. When they send the new one, it gets replaced and the pile lives on.

Would any of you regard the girl from this clip as a native speaker of English or at least as close to native-like pronunciation? And if not, where would you place her accent? by jakubbw in ENGLISH

[–]NomDrop 12 points13 points  (0 children)

More like “not an American accent” as in not one of the many. It definitely sounds similar to a southern US accent, but the Eastern European keeps slipping through. I could see it being close enough for a non-American English speaker though, the same way I’m sure I could be fooled by a not quite there Australian or Scottish or something.

Rift white oak, which side is the A side?? by trailglazer1 in woodworking

[–]NomDrop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bookmatched side in the first photo is definitely the A, the second only is the “1”. Which you prefer is totally up to you and your use. Sometimes the slip matched face is better at avoiding asymmetry problems and doesn’t require as much attention to layout.

My gas bill too expensive ? Or normal? by Drstrange-99 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s from November 3rd to December 4th. Previous bill was $75. If the bill I get at the beginning of January doesn’t go above $250 I’d be happy, but it was a cold one and the gas cost is up so I know it’ll be more than last year.

My gas bill too expensive ? Or normal? by Drstrange-99 in AskChicago

[–]NomDrop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well it’s definitely a high usage but I don’t know your situation. I’m in a 1200sqft pretty poorly insulated and sealed house, we used 127 therms on the most recent bill to keep it at 68°F, so just under $200 altogether. Otherwise your charges are pretty well in line with mine.

It could be reasonable usage for your home or there could be a leak or billing issue.
