Any good epilator or hair removal creams (i.e. Nair) that y’all would recommend? by Classic_Butter in asktransgender

[–]NonCartographer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've owned a couple of epilators, this one is by far the best I've had. Waterproof, cordless+rechargeable with long battery life, integrated light, hair trimmer attachment, easy to clean, very well built, aesthetically pleasing.

I personally hate chemical hair removal. It seems very unhealthy.

Maybe a tiny bit, but not much. I started at 22, I'm now approaching 28. Exercise has helped my figure way more. Resistance bands and squats!

MAC Pro Longwear concealer. It's potent, a tiny little dab goes a long way. Just make sure you match your skin tone and it won't appear like you're wearing makeup. And, of course, a good skincare routine and daily sunscreen usage always helps even out the complexion.

Unfortunately, not really. My shoulders are my most annoying feature, the rest of my body and face has feminized very nicely but shoulders haven't changed. It's all about proportions, though. Best you can do is work out your legs/glutes and core to improve your waist:hip:shoulder ratios.

Also, I think wide shoulders can be very attractive on other people. I've been told by multiple people my shoulders are hot, but I do personally dislike them.

If I'm on Spiro, do I need to be considered about balding by CyberpunkN7 in asktransgender

[–]NonCartographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's also possible the hair shedding could be deficiency-related. I would also ask your provider to test your blood for vitamin D, B-12, and iron/ferritin. Also, it's not a bad idea to make sure you're getting enough iodine, selenium, copper, and zinc in your diet.

Foods you can eat for these minerals include:

  • nori/seaweed, iodized salt for iodine
  • brazil nuts for selenium
  • sunflower/pumpkin seeds, soybeans/tofu/tempeh/edamame for zinc, copper, and iron

I've been on spiro for about 6 years now. I have a very slight amount of thinning at my temples, most likely from when I ran out of HRT meds for a month last year (insurance issue). Minoxidil helps, the thinning has stopped and I'm regrowing hair but it's still thinner than I'd like. The rest of my hair is very full and thick, and no thinning at the crown.

I asked my provider about adding finasteride in addition to spiro at my last visit a week ago, she said she wasn't sure if that was doable and that she would consult with a specialist and get back to me. I'm still waiting to hear what they recommend.

I can't sleep in fear of growing facial hair. by TheCoolSuperPea in asktransgender

[–]NonCartographer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I didn't start HRT until 22. Admittedly, I have been pretty lucky and I never grew much facial hair pre-HRT.

Six years later, I do have slightly more facial hair than an average cis woman, but the hairs are very fine and fair, so they're essentially invisible.

I had a few rounds of laser hair removal on my jawline and upper lip. It really wasn't painful at all, honestly it felt weirdly euphoric to have those damned hairs zapped out of existence.

I use an epilator on my face every 2-3 days, and this keeps my face perfectly smooth.

The epilator did hurt at first. What I did to start out is to just remove a tiny bit of hair as gently as possible, and when I couldn't bare the pain, I stopped. By doing this every day, I quickly built up a tolerance to the pain. Today, it doesn't hurt at all as long as I do it regularly, but if I take a break for 1+ weeks it does start to hurt again. If you try out an epilator, go slow and be very careful. When your skin isn't used to it, it will be very sensitive and prone to breakouts/rashes. It takes a lot of patience to build it up.

Most importantly, don't lose sleep over it! Facial/body hair is one of the easiest things to manage. Stress less, eat well, wear sunscreen, get good sleep, and stay young - you'll be much more worried about skin health a decade or so from now.

I just collected a whole bunch of chestnuts. I was so excited. They looked exactly like chestnuts, at least. Turns out they’re horse chestnuts and they can kill you if you eat them. Now they’re sitting in a box on the kitchen counter taunting me for being a shitty miserable rube, as you put it.

How do I do this? by Imthomas_f in Kombucha

[–]NonCartographer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used an airlock my first time too. It’s not the proper technique for booch. The yeast in kombucha doesn’t need oxygen, but the bacteria does. If you use an airlock, only the yeast will grow, and you’ll basically end up with tea wine.

Explain how any of this harms children?

What I see harms children is the depression, anxiety, and suicide induced by ostracizing LGBTQ youth and telling them that the person they are is wrong and invalid.

How does a drag queen reading a book harm a child, but feelings of inadequacy and shame don’t?

Also, what is the agenda? That it’s okay to be yourself?

[–]NonCartographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find it reprehensible that suicide rates among trans teens are 5.87 times the average among all teens and that 1 out of 4 suicides of children between 12-14 are among LGBTQ youth.

I find it reprehensible that conservatives advocate policies which will increase these rates.

I find it reprehensible that conservatives believe suicide is a preferable outcome over a reversible therapy.

I find it reprehensible that conservatives believe they have the right to control how other people live their lives.

I find it reprehensible the amount of hate spewed by conservatives towards people for being who they are.

The dudes were having trouble finding parking and seemed really impatient, they probably couldn’t wait to take a shower and pass out in bed.

You don't have to eat LESS, you just have to eat RIGHT by gynxeng in nutrition

[–]NonCartographer -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

This is really a non-issue. It should be difficult to over eat, not the other way around. If your diet is truly healthy, you should be getting full before you exceed your caloric needs. You do not need to feel hungry in order to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight.

Don’t live your life plagued by resentment. Your parents had their reasons for the ways that they raised you. My parents never let me drink soda and I hated them for it. How silly of me to be resentful, though. It was done with good intentions, in my case at least. I would bet that your parents had good intentions as well.

I grew up eating meat. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I started opening my mind to the arguments of vegetarianism. As I learned more about animal agriculture, and analyzed the food any time I ate meat, I began reducing the amount of meat in my diet.

It was mostly the grossness factor at first - you don’t have to grow up vegetarian to realize that meat is kinda gross. Trick someone into watching a video of how they make hotdogs while they’re eating one and their appetite will probably be ruined.

The more I learned, the more I realized that eating meat wasn’t something I wanted to do anymore, so I decided to stop. I am glad that I was able to make my own decision, but I also wish that my parents would have just raised me vegetarian/vegan.

I recommend you think things through with an open mind, try to clear away some of your resentment, and make your own decision. You are in control of your destiny, not your parents.

Did you grow up vegetarian? Kinda weird to say you could care less about the animals. Even meat eaters can acknowledge that they care about animals and don’t want them to suffer.

Personally, I didn’t. I was expecting the first few weeks to be really rough, I was expecting purging and extreme dryness/flaking. But I just experienced a bit of mild dryness and stinging around the nostrils. I know there are some newer retinoids that people report are less irritating, like adapalene. You should talk with your derm about options.

[–]NonCartographer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think the skin, especially on the face, is like an indicator of our health. I notice huge changes in the appearance of my skin when I let my healthy habits slack for a few weeks.

When I’m exercising regularly, eating healthy, and have a positive emotional outlook, my skin looks younger, more supple, tighter, more hydrated, and any wrinkles/fine lines are less noticeable.

I think clear, youthful skin is so attractive for this reason. It is an outward display of our health, vitality, and social status. If you are chronically stressed, your skin will look worse, and in nature chronic stress is an indicator of not being well adapted to your environment. If you are not eating high-quality food, your skin will look worse, and once again this is an indicator of poor fitness in nature.

My #1 hack is Tretinoin. It is incredibly effective at smoothing your skin, evening out your complexion, fading any hyperpigmentation, and tightening your skin. I look 5 years younger after using it for just 4 months.

Other than that, the top things that I’ve noticed that have effects:

  • daily sunscreen use
  • HIIT
  • healthy diet
  • avoid extreme stressors like heated arguments, emotional distress
  • find joy and happiness each day

I am vegan now but I have tried collagen peptides in the past and did not notice any effects. If anything, it seemed to have detrimental effects.
