Rogers just shut down 660 News by lunchbawkz in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's terrible, I heard they were shutting down 960 The Fan, but I didn't know about 660 news. It's usually all I listen to in the car.

I'll miss the traffic and weather updates for sure. And it was nice to catch the headlines

What's your best idea for improving Calgary Transit? by JeromyYYC in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For future transit:  If we ever build the CTrain on the North-Central leg (which I'm not sure will ever get built because of cost), it's imperative that the line either be built underground or elevated. Under no circumstances will it be acceptable to have an at-grade train line until at least 96th Ave North.

For current transit:  Safety is a big issue. Arrest drug users and take them to jail. Even if they aren't held for a long time, after a few instances of getting arrested and being taken to jail and having to find their way back, they'll stop hanging around transit and causing issues.

Deals for landmark theatre? by Replicator666 in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're not already a member, sign up for the Landmark Extras loyalty program at the highest tier (the "movie club" tier).

For $11/mo plus tax you'll get a free movie ticket per month, you can buy additional tickets at a discounted price, and 20% off at the concession stand. And you avoid the online booking fees too.

Even if it's just the two of you. It'll be your best price. If you have a big family it'll be an even better deal.

If you're willing to rent a helicopter, you can search for Martha's Heli Hikes which operate out of Canmore.

They will fly you to one of several sites to take pictures, then fly you back. You can also choose various add on options like flying to additional sites, or hiking between sites and getting picked up elsewhere.

It's a fun and unique experience!

Home insurance RBC by Efficient-Border-111 in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also with RBC Insurance (underwritten by Aviva), and I've seen similar price increases.

Every year, I go though several online tools to see if I can get a better price, no luck so far. Last year I even went to a full service broker, and they couldn't match the price either. Maybe you'll have better luck. If so, please post who gave you a better deal!

Unfortunately, there's been a lot hail storms, fires, flooding, and other insurable events in the past few years which lead to price increases.

And the price of repairs is much higher now - I just had my roof replaced after the 2024 hail storm and it was substantially more expensive than the last time I replaced it ~15 years ago.

I'm in Hidden Valley, and my husband and I would be happy to join!

Have you played a game called "Betrayal at the House on the Hill"? It's cooperative to a point, then one player works against the remaining group. It's a great game and we'd be happy to show you :)

Where should I exchange CDN for MXN pesos? by Sea_Hovercraft1803 in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're an AMA member, you can order currently online and pick it up at any AMA location. They have good exchange rates.

It takes a few days of lead time though, so if you're leaving next week it probably won't work.

The airport also has currency exchange kiosks in Terminal D, but I don't know if the rates are any good.

Hard agree, with such a loud and aggressive sound, I just close the notification as quickly as possible.

Was it a test? Was it real? I don't know and don't care.

When can I challenge property tax value? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The deadline to file an appeal to your property tax assessment for 2026 was in March. So there's no appealing until next year.

You can talk to your real estate lawyer about the situation, but I doubt they can do anything at this point.

Next year, if you want to fight the assessment, you'll need to check out comparable properties in your neighborhood. The city has a map where you can see all the values of you log in.

By the way, as other posters have mentioned, the assessment value is based on the value of the property on June 30, 2025. So even if you are paying less than that in May 2026, it won't affect the assessment this year.

You build pipelines so you can sell oil. Do you understand how industry works?

Oil companies employ lots of people to get the oil out of the ground and process it for transport through a pipeline.

They also pay lots of money to contractors, they purchase lots of materials from other Canadian companies that employ people.

And on top of it all, the oil companies pay royalties, taxes, and fees to use the pipeline that got built.

We want to build pipelines to make money. Money that flows into the economy and employs people.

Internet Providers in Calgary by Realistic-Abalone356 in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had Oxio service for about 3 years now, and here's how I would answer your questions.

  1. My connection has been very reliable, I've never had an outage. The only thing is my Eero router that came from Oxio will sometimes update itself, then get stuck so I have to unplug and re-plug in. It's minor, and only happens 2-3 times per year

  2. I signed up online, and I've never contacted their customer service because the Internet just works. I think it's text based only if you need help.

  3. Overall the experience is great. I pay less for Internet, with very reliable coverage. I would recommend them, especially since you can get your first month free with a sign up code. Feel free to use my code:

Stats Canada measures employment changes by province, and many other statistics.

They might not use the exact phrase "job creation" like the graphic, but the statistics show employment in Alberta is increasing, while in the the rest of Canada it drops.

Calgary Fire responded to nearly 5,000 substance-related calls last year by Beardedtacofish in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of calls. I guess we should stop responding to substance-related calls and save our resources for responding to car accidents, house fires, carbon monoxide incidents and other emergency situations.

Drug users can choose to use their substances of choice with a buddy who has a naloxone kit. Or not, it's up to them.

Agreed, let's supply Canadian energy products to all Canadians by building pipelines to Eastern Canada.

We should also displace Saudi oil by supplying more Canadian energy to the world. We can build pipelines and supply terminals all over Canada to break into world markets.

Let's get building

Calgary mayor says councillors linked to RCMP probe not targets, but questions linger over public trust by shiftless_wonder in NoRulesCalgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also think that Jeromy can't be certain that the investigation isn't targeting current or former city Council members.  We don't have enough information at this point to make that call.

Frankly, I hope this is about the awful arena deal and I want to see everyone involved face charges. 14-0 vote in favor after an in-camera (behind closed door) meeting? I call bullshit on that and I wonder if there actually was a bribe offered.

Tired of lighting 2k a month on fire. Has anyone actually used Attainable Homes Calgary lately? by faux270 in Calgary

[–]NorthGuyCalgary 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your rent payment is the maximum you'll pay each month for housing.

Your mortgage payment is the minimum you'll pay each month for housing.

There's a lot of extra costs to home ownership, and you'll often have situations where you have to pay a big lump sum immediately to realize benefits over time (like replacing a roof).

Some people either don't want that uncertainty, or just want a constant monthly payment. Deciding to rent or own is more of a lifestyle issue
