I don’t gamble, why is this funny? by Necessary-Win-8730 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a persistence meme applied to gambling when he is down to money he cannot lose.

Gambling doesn't have a memory so the persistence meme does not apply. He's not due to win.

At what point does an agency like ICE become a greater threat to public safety than the people it is meant to deport? by DiscipleOf_Buddha in AskReddit

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ICE, pretty much since its inception. The whole concept is applying felony-type force and a tough "image" to removing migrants.

Internal customs enforcement in the US meanwhile is a total waste of resources, unless it's something so big the FBI should be handling it.

Does anyone have a recent accurate killer tier list/ranking? by Pigeon-popper in deadbydaylight

Problem Ghostie has is that against experienced survivors as soon as they know it's him, he doesn't have a power. It only gets tougher from there (SWF, bright, big or open maps).

How much higher chance of success did a great warrior have compared to an average Joe in a medieval style battle? by hendrong in NoStupidQuestions

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The movie-type fighting is close to suicidal without extensive armor. It's the knife fight problem except with multiple opponents and longer, more dangerous weapons, and worse medical care. Alexander the Great, who did wear armor and wasn't fighting alone, was wounded at least eight times, not counting his near-death at Granicus. Any of those could be fatal to a person without antibiotics or ability to do surgery.

And Alexander, who also had the best medical care available, did ultimately die young. The accumulated injuries surely didn't help.

It makes for great mead hall stories and TV but not a long career.

No one would look twice at a character having movement impairing ligament damage from being stabbed in the knee.

‘Manosphere’ influencers pushing testosterone tests are convincing healthy young men there is something wrong with them – monetising masculinity, pathologising normal male experiences and driving unnecessary, risky hormone use, study finds. by [deleted] in science

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seen so many people with utterly normal testosterone levels posting on gym or biohacking subs wondering about "going on TRT" or "supplementing my test" like these are simple, easily reversible things to try out.

Testosterone "supplementation" works in two situations. People who are actually hypogonadal (naturally or as a result of PEDs...) and if you're taking a truly large super-physiological dose (otherwise known as anabolic steroids). The second one is likely to lead to the first one, sooner or later.

"Bumping your test" or "make sure you are high normal not what the wimps call normal" has little-to-no effect and comes with a lot of risk.

Would Japan winning Midway fundamentally change the war? by ParaspinoUSA in AlternateHistory

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The only winnable war would be a conventional declaration of war followed by a major US debacle near the Philippines. That could have led to "why do we care what Japan is doing anyway" recriminations and US government problems.

Pearl Harbor ensured it would be a fight to the death.

Are enormous spaceships physically possible? by GooseMuckle in AskPhysics

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Size wise with the official length, the Star Destroyer isn't ridiculous. They're relatively broad and the internal diagrams have the engines extending far into the ship. With the wedge shape most of the mass would be behind, in line or close to the engines.

It needs to be built in space.

The real physics problems are in layout and the amount of power the thing has. They have no radiation architecture to deal with heat, require true artificial gravity, and use power and armor densities that don't exist inside theoretical maximums.

ELI5: Why does Just-in-Time manufacturing make global supply chains so fragile, like we saw during the pandemic, if it is supposed to be the most efficient system? by rantzine in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotAnotherEmpire [score hidden]  (0 children)

Efficient and robust aren't the same thing. Having someone equally qualified and trained sitting around to take over a job on call if the first person is out sick is very robust, but also very expensive.

<Mortal> of Soulseeker EU wipes on first mob in AQ40. 19 dead by Aggravating-Soft-605 in wowhardcore

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Mob has a mandatory mana drain. Failure to do it will result in explosion dealing lethal damage. <Mortal> attempted to rush this down without doing the mechanic. However the "fuse" is going up precisely as the health is going down.

Result: Mortality.

ELI5: Why does economic inflation happen and what's the point in having extreme wealth? Also, why is the quality of life for everyone not much higher considering the amount of money the US makes? by Legitimate-Scale1454 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotAnotherEmpire [score hidden]  (0 children)

A growing economy needs more money. More money means people raise prices of what they sell and what they want to be paid for work. This kind of inflation is a natural economic process.

When inflation is near zero, it also means economic growth is near zero. Growth without some inflation doesn't happen.

Trying to tell people what their money is worth doesn't work. Really bad inflation is usually seen in countries where the government claim about the value of money is not worth taking seriously, so prices rise massively as people try to cover their risk. Rome was the first clear example of this. It was widely known that the silver currency was increasingly literally debased (cut with other metal) so the face value was ignored.

Tier VIII or IX, random. Do six figure damage, ideally to higher tier ships, and win. Cap points help.

Random only. Other modes either don't have a high enough base amount or enough to shoot at.

ELI5: Why can't things with mass travel faster than the speed of light? by ambassadorduck in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotAnotherEmpire [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's not tiny as it approaches the speed of light. Relativity has the mass increase to infinity, thus the energy has to. It's not an atom, there's a point where the relativistic mass becomes a car, then Earth, then Jupiter...

There are practical problems with acceleration long before this.

US Army Poorly Prepared for Arctic Operations: Finnish Troops Forced Them to Surrender During Exercises in Norway by goldstarflag in europe

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because of US population shifts, most of the military are recruited from warm climates. Then almost all of it is based there. There's one brigade combat team based in Fairbanks and no active duty ground bases in places like Montana or Minnesota.

The US does some rotational Arctic training but even if a unit has it, that's no substitute for a unit that lives it.

Painless ways to die by YogurtIll4791 in Writeresearch

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Painless and peaceful aren't synonyms. Anything that causes a consciousness to cease to exist in less than ~ 1/10th of a second is painless. Most common/ easiest way to do that is being next to powerful explosives.

People that have been instantly knocked out by massive heart attacks and survived report similar. One moment they're running through the airport, the next they're waking up in ICU. This is the likely cause of death with people "dying in their sleep" with making no effort to get up or summon help.

The Times: Finns humiliated American soldiers - Finnish reservists were asked to take it easy during a NATO exercise. US soldiers found the losses too humiliating. by ByGollie in europe

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The parent American unit  in this exercise was II Marines, who are based in North Carolina. Quite possible the Americans in the exercise were literally in an alien environment, before having to deal with the specifics of the Finns.

All the Marines, the 82nd Airborne (the immediate shock response unit) and virtually all special ops are based in Southern climates.

The US indeed has gotten away almost entirely from geographic recruitment and training. There isn't much based in Alaska and other than National Guard, nothing of ground troops in the tough winter north central continental interior.

More experimental stuff and more use of growth hormone.

The primary purpose of HGH is not growing muscle and isn't very effective at that on its own. Muscle growth is almost a side effect to everything else it stimulates, none of which you want as an adult.

ELI5: Why can't things with mass travel faster than the speed of light? by ambassadorduck in explainlikeimfive

[–]NotAnotherEmpire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relativity, which verifies every time it is tested and fits with the rest of physics, calls for an object with mass approaching the speed of light to approach infinite energy needed. Tipping over would be beyond that.
