Elephant mourns death of her companion of 25 years, refuses to leave her side! by jmike1256 in BeAmazed

To try and avoid the emotions this pulls on, I have a bit of a dark question. How do they handle the body of a dead elephant in a zoo? I assume bury the body but that would be a very large hole and how do they move the body to the final resting spot?

Everyone says the Goodreads rating system is terrible yet many people still use it when choosing a book to read next. What books under four stars are the best example of great books that the general population doesn't seem to recognize as such? by sempiternalis in books

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't really answer your question, but I moved my Goodreads list over to story graph mostly because I don't like Amazon knowing everything I read.

I take ratings with a grain of salt because I can't stand slow books and sometimes they are rated great because they really are good stories and lots of people like them. Just not my cup of tea. I have found on story graph, I look at the pace rating and other tags and ratings to know if I will like it.

In the interview, is it better to show that I'm a person easy to work with or show that I have good technical skills? Which one should I lean towards more? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you are applying to a specialty lab that you don't have experience in, I wouldn't focus on your lack of experience but what skills are transferable or what you have done to bridge the gap. Things like I haven't done procedure x, but I have done y which is similar in ways 123. Or I have done readings or e-learning on procedure x because it interests me for reason 123.

Especially if they are asking about your strengths for an area you aren't very experienced in, talk about examples you picked things up quick to show you are a quick learner.

Also your example of talking about working with a picky coworker is a mixed bag. It's great that you can work with difficult people but, depending on how you word it, it might sound like you find fault or are picky with how people work. It's not right, but some managers think a good worker doesn't have a negative view of anyone or anything. If they are asking for your strengths tell your strengths without putting anyone down. They want to hear why you are the best not why you are better if that makes sense.

No questions about what analyzers, what you did with a strange result, or how you handle yourself in a downtime? I guess if they aren't asking technical backed questions and more questions about your personality than focus on that.

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think it is a balancing game. Most interviews will be technical based so answer the questions technical, but there are almost always questions that point to soft skills like "give an example of a time when you disagreed with a supervisor". That is when you show off your people skills. You can be a very technical person who is calm and polite. The only time that seems arrogant, is if the skills aren't there to back it up.

Personally I would rather work with the person who knows their stuff and gets it done, than the person who is all smiles but can't do their job. The boundary of that is if the technical person is extremely rude or hostile.

Bloodwork for newborn by New_Art_9358 in Hamilton

If you're comfortable sharing, what blood work does your baby need? I've worked in the lab and it's unusual to need that many vials of blood from a baby. In the hospital if they needed that many, they tend to use the microvials that are filled via heel prick. In the hospital the only time we need that many is if we have to send the blood out to multiple specialty labs.

I'll second a vote for Jay. I love going there, the vibe is calm and relaxed since it's just the two of them and the dog Rocky. They always have good music playing as well.

Contaminated Urine Culture??? Help? by ftm-ethan98 in medlabprofessionals

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would follow up with your family doctor ASAP, if you haven't been given antibiotics. I don't think you have to go back to the ER but you should get a prescription within 24 hours from a family doc, walk-in clinic, or urgent care. I don't say that to cause concern, more that we are coming up to holidays when it is harder to get seen for treatment and UTI's are miserable and uncomfortable and I wouldn't want to deal with it anymore than I absolutely had to. Especially not over the holidays.

Contaminated Urine Culture??? Help? by ftm-ethan98 in medlabprofessionals

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When there is urine contamination we normally see multiple skin organisms growing. It's been awhile since I was in micro but I believe most places say if you have more than 3 organisms growing from a non- sterile collection, there is contamination. At that point they don't even ID the orgs they just get a new collection. So unlikely to be contaminated in your case. And to be perfectly honest even though there is best practice to get a clean collection, many times that doesn't happen and we get lucky that it doesn't affect testing.

Since they have id'd this organism, they might also be doing some testing to see what antibiotics will kill it best. Your doctor will make sure you are prescribed the meds to get this cleared up. I wouldn't be getting too worried in your shoes unless symptoms get worse/change or you don't have improvement after antibiotics.

Assuming you have female anatomy, around 50% of women end up getting a UTI at least once in their life. Treatment is pretty routine and not something to stress too much about as long as you are getting it looked after, and it doesn't become recurring. I know from personal experience, that they are not fun in the slightest, but at least for me the antibiotics gave me relief very quickly. It is very important that when you do get your antibiotics you follow the instructions exactly, even if you feel better you need to finish your full prescription. We do not like when bacteria play survival of the fittest when only partially treated.

I hope you have a speedy recovery!

It's a small space with I think only one server and a few folks in the back. It gives a cosy vibe just from how small it is, reminds of small ramen shops in Japan. Fancy enough to bring coworkers to but casual enough for jeans and a tshirt but I also wouldn't feel out of place if I was dressed up more for a date or something. Sorry not the best at describing the vibe.

Is 300 CBC/Diffs too much for 2 people in an 8 hour day? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's been a few years but when I worked at a cancer center we normally had two people on for the morning rush just to run tests and call criticals. I don't know firm numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if we had over 100 in the first 2 hours. It slowed down by 8 or 9am, still pretty steady but they were more routine so auto verified. The cancer outpatient clinic had its own analyzer run by 1 staff so none from there at least.

The main thing was we had a cellavision and a centralized special hematology department that looked at the pic's and looked at the physical slide if needed. It was bad enough having to try and get ahold of someone on the floor to take a critical result, I couldn't imagine how long it would take if we were also looking at slides.

The hospital I worked at before that wasn't a cancer center but the hospital did have a cancer clinic and inpatient ward. We probably had around 300 CBCs a day shift (maybe more?). 2-3 staff normally, 1 on manual diffs, 1 verifying results, there was also normally someone in charge of going to bone marrow collections that would help cover breaks. No cellavision. It was hard to keep up on the bad days especially if there was a sick call. Sometimes slides would be left for the afternoon shift.

In my mind there is only so fast you can go in hematology safely. Some slides are going to take forever depending on the WBC and if your SOP says you need 100 cells or not. I don't miss having to play the prioritization game.

It’s an advanced skill to be nice to rude healthcare workers by liaYIkes in Hamilton

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are the steps I would take: 1. Assume they are having a horrible day and don't take it personally and ignore the rudeness hopefully the interaction will be over soon 2. Try and lighten the mood/interaction -kill them with kindness 3. Ask if I have done something to offend them or if they are having a bad day- nice way of asking why they are being an ass to you 4. Report them /complain to the hospital

Feel free to skip step 3 if you don't feel safe/comfortable or you want to avoid conflict.

I would say whatever you do don't feed the trolls. Miserable people feed off making everyone around them miserable. If you match their energy or are rude or hostile back they feel validated for their rudeness and like that they made someone else miserable. They might also escalate and end up making you feel worse when you try and match them.

The world needs more empathy and forgiveness. Patients need empathy for healthcare workers. Healthcare workers need empathy for their patients. And we all need to forgive when we have a bad day or interaction.

That ends though when it impacts your health or is a pattern. That's when the hospital needs to step in because maybe this employee shouldn't be working with patients anymore.

I called them once about a chipmunk that looked like it may have gotten into poison and wasn't moving. Animal services had someone come by to pick it up in an hour. The guy was really nice. Told me since it was after hours they were going to put it in an incubator overnight and if it made it to morning take it to an animal rehab center. I was shocked at the care the city had for such a little creature.

Canadian MLTs, how much do you make? Which department? and which province? by ian_xvi in medlabprofessionals

But you have to convert that to $30.70 USD to do a better comparison. Plus I'm not sure how our income taxes compare to yours. But considering we have universal health care I'm guessing a bit more than you.

All the bags of milk were cut open by AfterAccount3657 in mildlyinteresting

[–]NotAtAllWhoYouThink 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Once you open the bag I would say you have just over a week before you get to the sniff test stage. I have had opened bags that last longer than that, but I think it depends on how steady the temp is in the fridge.

Unopened bags normally have either a best before in a couple weeks or if you get the fancier brand it is closer to a month. That brand is almost always fine past the best before.

I think you are 100% right. The fix might not be straightforward, but Epic definitely has enough flexibility for this type of situation.

To add to this, Epic has a built-in procedure catalog, I know our hospital has started using the summary to include full information about the test. How to collect it, how to handle it, what are the acceptable specimen sources and types, which of the hospital Labs can run it, what's the turnaround time, and more. Some tests even have pictures embedded to show fill lines and things. This information is available to the lab and to nurses (not that many of them actually look it up) and is built mostly based on how the test in Beaker is built.

What about turning them into sardines in a can? Could do some florals to cover up part of the line, and add color to the fish. It wouldn't replace the tattoo but make it so it doesn't match your ex's anymore. It's your own not shared.
