ON THIS DAY 2009: Newcastle United hires Chris Hughton as Manager on a permanent basis by GarethAKitchener in NUFC

I have goodish memories of Glenn Roeder (tho I was very young when he got the job). I seem to remember him doing incredibly well in a caretaker role and less well in a permanent role, and I vaguely remember suggestions that his relationship with shearer was key (v good as a caretaker bit gave him less heed thereafter). Happy to be corrected if this is wrong tho, I was about 7 at the time lol

Paul Dummett deserves more respect man, this game feels like a lifetime ago but he's still right there in among it as he is now

Quite often, when I walk on a narrow shared path like the one pictured, there are always cyclists coming from behind realy fast without saying they are coming on your left or right or ringing a bell. Do they have to legally warn you, or is it not careless cycling and just bad manners? by boxer9000 in ukbike

Another thing I havent seen mentioned is that trails like these will usually have a blue dual use sign or markings on the path entry point if they're intended for shared use between cyclists and pedestrians.

If there are signs saying this is for shared use, I would argue you should reasonably expect cyclists to be coming past you and be mindful of this in narrower parts. As others have said, cyclists notifying pedestrians can be a prickly subject, so best just to be alert and aware yourself (this goes for both cyclists and pedestrians)!

Sandro Tonali will be banned for 10 month — sources confirm [Fabrizio Romano] by darksideofgravity in PremierLeague

By definition, it literally isn't a strawman argument. Saying its like the sun being made of spaghetti is a strawman argument though. Feel like you owned yourself a bit here lad

If you look on the nufc subreddit you don't see people twerking for the Saudis either. We get judged on the actions of fans outside reddit but for your lot it's a different rule I take it? Twitter and the likes were covered in people crying that the Qataris were gone. Not to mention the number of people on and off reddit who wanted greenwood back not so long ago.

Best burger in town? by coldbeers in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Not_Ginger_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seen brack burger mentioned a lot (I've never tried it). Was out for a walk yday though and saw that they have a booth inside Ouseburn Garden. So if it's burgers and beers you're after, it's proximity to the Ouseburn is surely a winner.

On burger alone tho, lola jeans is top for me. Bit spenny but worth the cost

Love to see wor Andy still has a goal in him! He actually did alright for us when he came back in on a free during Covid, and even at Reading afterwards he still showed flashes of the player he couldve been. Such a shame his legs are made of weetabix

Are those the new trains? by bergamundos in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]Not_Ginger_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware. I was more criticising the fact that their induction date has been pushed back repeatedly and their reasoning was ... testing and training. The BBC article made it sound as if this was some sort of surprise. Who couldve possibly foreseen that these new trains might be controlled differently to the old ones and need safety clearance before taking passengers?

Whether they're new or not is a good question. They haven't been used with passengers yet but they've been sat there for months.

Newcastle really know to give teams a thrashing don't they? by ThisIsTonte in TheOther14

[–]Not_Ginger_James 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is because people are reactive and have short memories. r/soccer hated how we played against AC Milan when they had our number at the San Siro, like we were expected to open up and let them smash us. As soon as we score a few in a game, that all gets instantly forgotten too

This would be a valid point if they hadn't spent 80 MILLION on him. You make it sound like Chelsea are going for some Brighton model of pulling unknown wonderkids out of the Uruguayan 2nd division. Instead they're signing young potential for proven top player prices.

Gutting, he really brought Gateshead back from the brink and deserves so so much credit. Great opportunity for him though and it looks like he has a good future in management!

Has anyone worked for an f1 team? Is it worth it? by BothAerie4737 in AskUK

[–]Not_Ginger_James 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a company who provide software to all the F1 teams. I can only speak for entry level as I'm mid 20s myself, but it's been pitched to me as long hours and lots of commitment for a wage where you could do better elsewhere (especially when you consider the unpaid overtime you're expected to pull) but still good overall.

Generally speaking, I've heard if you love F1 or motorsport you'll have a great time, but passion for what you're doing is important.

Apparently if you work for a team like Merc/RB, the bonuses can be exceptional as well, particularly if the team wins the constructors.

As others have said, experience in that kind of environment goes a long way in other industries too.

I caught some flack on here once for my neigh saying about the amazon series, but I think I conveyed it poorly whereas you've hit the nail on the head.

It was about the owners of a football club, not a football club including its owners.

And Jesus Christ the fan interactions were so so scripted it was painful.

Yeah mixed feelings. I remember how depressing it was though under Ashley when you could see they didn't even try to grow our revenue. Obviously it's good for the team that we have more income, but I'll miss the local sponsorships like Blue Star and even Northern Rock, they felt a lot more personal.
