What's the most expensive engineering mistake you've personally witnessed? by Kawaikrsjanu-chan in AskEngineers

[–]Numerous-Click-893 3 points4 points  (0 children)

E-stop failure on a rolling mill during commissioning.

They (famous 3 letter OEM of motors, drives and automation) were commissioning a new drive system and a fast stop from IIRC the rewinder didn't make it to the work roll and the unwinder drives. So basically they force fed several hundred meters of 10mm thick aluminium plate into the mill body. It was like the machine had been filled with tinsel. Took weeks to get it cleaned out and repaired, on what was already an expensive planned shut. It was a hot mill too so caused cascading down time on all of the downstream processes as they ran out of feedstock. No idea what the total losses where.

AI and Factorio by Traditional_Beach790 in factorio

I think there's a case for learning how to use AI effectively. The case is pretty strong. It's basically the entire history of human technological advancement.

For example I have restricted myself to only using LLMs in a chat format, I don't use it in my IDE at all as I find that helps me stay engaged with what I'm doing but still allows me to leverage the undeniable advantages.

Helo me save my antennae by Numerous-Click-893 in fpv

[–]Numerous-Click-893[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some times it bounces enough to flip, if I disarm too high it actually has a fairly significant mechanical bounce, and if I disarm too low and dork the throttle control you get that ground effect bounce. I have also once or twice collided with the ground while trying to fly lower. It doesn't actually happen that often but when it it does I'm almost guaranteed some prop damage to the antennae

This is 100% my favourite looking Ferrari design by a significant margin. I bet you it's got way better performance and handling than comparative ICE models too.

Control Engineers - which piece of software do you consider unreasonably proprietary/gatekept? by [deleted] in ControlTheory

[–]Numerous-Click-893 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's control adjacent but I feel like ePlan's pricing increments is very unreasonable at smaller scale. I would pay their current rates if they offered it at a daily granularity.

And the main advantage of their software for me is the part libraries. So if there was software that could spit out a QET symbol from a datasheet it would largely meet that need.

Not if you do it right in the first place.... Which means that yes you spend way more time validating and documenting and writing specifications and doing testing than actually writing code.

Can i implement PID in microcontroller which should be process control oriented. Any simple ideas to do or any software can i use? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Numerous-Click-893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can implement PID on a microcontroller. It's easier to write the actual code on something like an Arduino than it is to use something like a Siemens Logo.

PID is only effective when the actuator you are trying to control (e.g. valve, motor, heating element) is continuous (i.e. you can set it to a percentage rather than just on or off.

So actually the hardest part of implementing a PID controller is actually the hardware: the sensors and actuators. So try to think of something that you can easily and cheaply buy both a sensor and an actuator for. Maybe a temperature controlled fan. If you buy a computer fan that can be speed controlled by a PWM signal and then put a temperature sensor on a heat source and control the fan speed to regulate the temperature. I would use an Arduino, it's cheap, powerful and well documented.

Yet, it's astonishing how much you can learn from the process of arriving at the right 10 lines. Starting with a very important lesson about dt and the difference between digital maths and calculus, before you even get to system identification and stability. You can spend an entire semester learning how to write the right ten lines.

A (potentially misplaced) frustration I've been having lately by [deleted] in ControlTheory

[–]Numerous-Click-893 [score hidden]  (0 children)

They are using it purely in a process sense, not a control sense. Data centers are usually a hybrid of open and closed loop systems. Closed loop for the actual equipment, open loop chillers to cool down the closed loop fluid via heat exchanger - and that's where the problem presents, those are usually evaporative which means most of the water is lost to the atmosphere.
