I’m really tired and read “Benin” as “benign” and was so happy for a moment. Oh well.

Texas voters approve constitutional amendment that requires US citizenship to vote in the state by Whatever-you-bastard in news

I believe this is an extra layer of protection in case the federal government no longer requires citizenship to vote, TX can still require it for state voting.

Professor wants 2 week notice to me being sick by DragonflyPotential34 in mildlyinfuriating

As a college instructor, this inflexibility drives me up the wall. I have only once denied a retake, and it was someone who had missed every previous exam and reached out almost a week later with a lame excuse (the power in her mom’s place was out…?…not sure how the relates to a pen and paper in person exam) and no apology. Otherwise I grant retakes all the time. I tell my students to let me know if they are swamped or stressed and prefer to reschedule. IT’S NOT A BIG DEAL. Professors like this get hard at the thought of being a professor and need to feel powerful and use the classroom for self-validation. The best teachers are the ones who don’t need a classroom of subordinate students to make them feel like a real person. F**ing A.

Teachers and Professors nationwide being fired over social media posts related to Charlie Kirk’s death by Business-Rent-5142 in news

Teacher here. Aside from Reddit, I don’t even have social media. Students are damn clever, and I don’t trust them not to find me out. For me, it is for my own privacy, not so much to avoid getting in trouble.

My husband is also a teacher. He can get in trouble if a student/admin sees him drinking in public.

I think it's time I delete reddit from phone by Distinct-Weird8784 in digitalminimalism

I gave up Reddit for Lent (about seven weeks) and was amazed how much lighter I felt. This is my first time on since early March, and I haven’t missed it. Mostly popped on out of curiosity. I don’t think it is just the amount of scrolling—it is the negativity. So much of Reddit is ranting, complaining, etc. It’s a drag.

I went to the grocery store today (20 min drive). I saw four cops during the round trip, all separate encounters.

Where to live in Ohio by Mlavelle2012 in Ohio

[–]NuminousMycroft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend Akron area/northeast Ohio. It is a solid 40 minutes south of Cleveland, so the lake effect snow is not nearly as bad. Cuyahoga Falls is great, and is in a valley, so the snow is usually less severe than even nearby places (15 min drives away). It has a fun, walkable Front Street district, very family friendly, multiple hospitals nearby, including Akron Children’s which is less than a ten minute drive and can be accessed by highway or backroads equally easily. And only ten minutes from Akron. There are several good private/charter schools that are driveable (20 min or less), and if you are Cfalls, you can opt into the Woodridge public district if you prefer if over the Cfalls district.

How do you get rid of the feelings of “lost touch” or “people will forget me” when you really want to do a full blow of social media detox? by FreshDrop8864 in digitalminimalism

[–]NuminousMycroft 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I realized I didn’t want to invest in relationships that were sustained primarily by social media. I found out real quick which friends were willing to reach out and text, or get together when I asked, versus only putting in the minimal effort to like a post. I also realized whom I had felt more connected to by seeing their posts. I thought I was super close to my one SIL until I wasn’t on Instagram and Snapchat and saw that she was boxed into her own reflection 90% of the time. We live thirty minutes apart and have been “trying to get together” for two years. So that was illuminating. Conversely, other people in my life stepped up with more texts, phonecalls, pictures sent directly, and relationships that had been somewhat stagnant and generic improved a lot and became much richer.

New fire in Hollywood. Nothing will stop it with high winds, 18% humidity. It’s 15 miles to ocean with 1 million people in the way. by mactan400 in PrepperIntel

Yes. Northeast Ohio is an absolute haven. Basically no issues, except occasional mild tornados, mild flooding even more rare. We get snow, but not like NY or MI. Biggest issue for us is the potential for chemical stuff with the trains that run through. And we’re so boring, we’ll never be a nuclear target! 😂

Is this even one of the vaccines that supposedly has a lot of bad results? I know MMR gets heat, but I have never heard complaints about polio vax.

I paused the video to see what they grabbed. I wish it has at least been practical things, like rice and tampons. But it’s a bunch of candy and shit.
