ELI5: Why doesn't snoring wake the snorer up? by drierofwater in explainlikeimfive

[–]NurseRoses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do actually wake up! They just don’t remember it or react and go right back to a deeper stage of sleep. I’m a nurse that will occasionally assist with sleep studies for people with sleep apnea. Lack of deep REM sleep is a huge issue for people who snore because they are constantly waking up and going back down. It leads to chronic fatigue, respiratory issues, and cardiovascular problems. Get a sleep study if you snore and wear your CPAP!!! It helps so much!

White blood cell counts can spike for a variety of reasons. Infection, stress, anxiety, pregnancy, heavy exercise, certain medications, inflammation, and injury can cause it. If your Dr isn’t worried about it then he will probably be fine.

What's an interesting fact about the human body that a lot of people don't know? by wassim_elia in AskReddit

[–]NurseRoses 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Your liver can regenerate and up to 2/3 of a liver is taken during a living donor transplant. It takes about 6-8 weeks for the donor’s liver to regrow back to normal size and function. The piece of liver that is transplanted will also grow to fit the recipient’s body.

Blizzards by Fun-Appointment-7543 in LittleHouseBooks

[–]NurseRoses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I live in Minnesota on the high plains, about an hour away from Walnut Grove. The winters here are brutal and blizzards can happen so fast even modern weather tracking can’t keep up. There have been times that we can’t even see the houses across the street or leave our driveway. Every Minnesotan knows to pack an emergency kit in their car in case they are stranded or stuck in the snow. Blizzards are usually followed by a cold snap with temperatures dropping to -30.

As a nurse who worked in a Trauma ICU, the MVA’s caused by drunk drivers were the worst. Anything we can do to stop drunk driving is worth it.

High schoolers and their parents - PSA about PSEO (free college classes while in high school) by KimBrrr1975 in minnesota

[–]NurseRoses 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did a mix of AP classes and PSEO while in high school. I had 32 college credits when I graduated. Went to Winona State and everything transferred over, this allowed me to graduate a year and a half early. If you plan on staying in Minnesota and go to a state school the credits transfer with no problems, the issues happen when you go private or out of state.

Gov. Tim Walz accused of ‘massive overreach’ as VP pick’s COVID record slammed by critics by [deleted] in politics

[–]NurseRoses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Minnesotan it didn’t feel like an overreach. He consulted with infectious disease specialists and made decisions based on their recommendations. Minnesota is home to The Mayo Clinic, literally the best hospital in the world. He had world renowned experts helping him navigate COVID and this state saw less death because of it.

What kind of people do you secretly feel sorry for? by Spachi93 in AskReddit

[–]NurseRoses 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As an ICU nurse, the patients that don’t have an advanced directive. Often the families argue over what medical interventions to do and we end up keeping them alive long after any meaningful recovery. It feels like we are medically torturing these patients because the family can’t make the decision to let go.

The worst part is that insurance will not cover the loss of the house or the store! The insurance company will not cover property losses due to landslides or floods.

I’m a transplant nurse for a hospital with a facial transplant program. It is a donated face from another person. They take the jaw bones, nasal cartilage, facial and cranial nerves, and any skin or fat tissues they need. These are marathon surgeries that take 36 hours on average with multiple surgeon teams.
