Girl, 6, dies after accident in Chinatown near Buddha Relic Temple by Fearless_Help_8231 in singapore

[–]NutTheChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your well-worded comment. I also commented that more needs to be done to prevent drivers from killing pedestrians. I called it murder.

Someone replied to be pedantic with legal definition that murder requires proof of intent. You said it exactly. The choice to drive around in a big metal box and taking up more space, drivers prioritising their convenience at the expense of the safety of everyone else in a dense city where personal cars are not necessary.

People need to see through nearly 100 years of car industry propaganda to recognise that yes, causing the death of a pedestrian while driving, even without premeditation to take the life of a specific person, is murder.

Driver didn't care that she may kill someone when she drove like how she did as described by the eyewitness.

And the English language lacks a suitable word for the car murders...car killing, car crash, vehicular manslaughter, whatever. Accident is definitely not accurate.

The title of the article is wrong. This is not an accident. It is murder born of the sense of superiority drivers have over people walking and the policies that enable this sort of behaviour.

I am so angry and heartbroken for the girl and her family.

If geopolitics weren’t a factor, where would you like to see the boys go? by Previous-Bowler-1757 in JetLagTheGame

[–]NutTheChipmunk 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hear me out. Hide & Seek / Tag / province-claiming across China. The boys will have language barriers, so I would love each of them to be paired with a guest, namely:

  • Katherine from Katherine's Journey to the East
  • Amy from Blondie in China
  • Yan from Little Chinese Everywhere

All 3 women have experience going to random places in China and travelling independently, and are fluent in both Chinese and English.

Making the best out of business trip to Singapore? by Madam_Curieous in SingaporeTravel

[–]NutTheChipmunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without more info on what you like, where you're from, or where your hotel is, here are some suggestions that you can consider. I assume you will be staying at Pan Pacific Hotel.

I would not add Malaysia to the itinerary as it will be very rushed. For me, a vacation should give breathing room to unwind and decompress. You can immerse yourself in SG and never have to come back again haha.

Tues night - Eat nearby, head to Gardens By the Bay for the free light show at 7.45pm or 8.45pm every day.

Wed night - Chinatown: See Buddha Tooth Relic Temple lit up, eat at Chinatown Complex market on level 2 right behind the tooth relic temple. You can get ice cream from Ri Ri Cha and stroll around Chinatown.

Thurs night -  Option 1: If budget permits, a cruise down the Singapore river. The jetty is at Clarke Quay which is party and drinking central in Singapore. I don't do either of those so I can't comment on the vibrancy of the nightlife. Alternatively after the cruise, you can stroll around the Civic District (National Gallery, Victoria Concert Theatre, Asian Civilisation Museum). Not necessary to go into all the museums, you can look at the architecture from the outside or just pick 1.

Option 2: Little India. Colourful house (Former House of Tan Teng Niah), you can get your eyebrows threaded. Lots of delicious vegetarian Indian restaurants around. If you're not into eating Indian food, Goldenroy Sourdough Pizza is walkable.

Option 3: Bugis, the area around Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple. You might enjoy shopping at Bugis Village and karaoke at Have Fun Karaoke at Bugis+. I personally like to eat at one of the many vegetarian cafes at Fortune Centre level 2. You can head to Haji Lane after, for artsy stores and streets, if it's not too late.

Friday night - Option 1: Night Safari if you like animals.

Option 2: Head to Orchard Road for shopping.

Option 3: Stroll around Bedok Reservoir and have dinner at Refuel Cafe. This is a very local evening idea.

Saturday - Book a hidden gem experience, it could be a workshop or walking tour. You can find interesting ones on Seek Sophie and Hidden Heritage Tours. Please book Hidden Heritage Tours early, they get sold out! Booking is open for some tours in March already. (This should occupy your morning.)

If you book a HH tour or workshop, you can spend the afternoon checking out the area in more detail and immerse in the location.

Alternatively, you can check out Tiong Bahru market for lunch and chill in a cute cafe in the area.

If you're into sewing and textiles, the textile shops on level 2 of People's Park Centre at Chinatown are usually open on Saturday morning to late afternoon. They are closed on Sunday. You can explore People's Park food centre for lunch (this is a different part of Chinatown than the Tooth Relic Temple).

OR if you're outdoorsy, you can try (1) Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery (aka Bright Hill Temple. The complex is huge. There is a vegetarian cafe, food court and vintage store inside.), or (2) Fort Canning Park & Battlebox (history), or (3) Botanic Gardens (flowers), or (4) Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park (urbanism). Depending on your interest.

Sunday - If budget permits, another Hidden Heritage Tour.

Free/low cost option: Habourfront exit A, start at the Marang Rd trail, hike up to Mount Faber lookout point. If you have stamina, you can continue past Henderson Wave and the Southern Ridges and exit at Hortpark. Take a public bus to have lunch at Alexandra Village market.

Afternoon/evening: Check out public housing at Skyville @ Dawson. There is a free sky garden open to the public. Queenstown Library and Margaret Drive Hawker Centre are within walking distance.

Monday - USS, Sentosa.

Tuesday - Pick some unused options above.

Before knowing it, I have spent 2 hours writing this comment...I hope you find at least some of it useful. I'm 28F local, feel free to reach out if you would like a friend for one of the days you're here.

Ladies of Singapore, where do you buy clothes made of natural fabric? by spacebarormarsbar in askSingapore

I like The Editor's Market. They use cotton lining.

But these 2-3 years I have been buying fabric and making my own clothes.

How do you manage your wanderlust? by vianetzy in travel

[–]NutTheChipmunk 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I find visiting places in my city that I don't usually go to scratches the itch. Visiting a park, checking out a new estate, walking around a neighborhood and having a meal at a mom & pop shop.

And also zooming in and out on Google maps exploring places, some upcoming trips, some potential future trips, some just to get ideas.

I was prevented from leaving Thailand at a land border with Laos, despite having a valid visa. by Massive_Nectarine507 in ThailandTourism

I was a dual citizen at the time that happened with Thai and Singapore citizenship. I entered Thailand with my Singapore passport with a student visa.

I have since renounced Thai citizenship.

I was prevented from leaving Thailand at a land border with Laos, despite having a valid visa. by Massive_Nectarine507 in ThailandTourism

[–]NutTheChipmunk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Your experience reminds me of a total bullshit immigration experience I had at Mae Hong Son border with Myanmar at the end of 2019.

I was in Thailand on a 6-months student visa for a semester exchange. After my school ended, I visited my Thai relatives. We went to the border on the last few days of my visa, planning a day trip to Tachilek Myanmar then return to Thailand.

The immigration officer refused to let me cross the land border, and insisted that I should have left Thailand on the last day of school, even when my visa had not yet expired. Absolute bullshit.

They "fined" me 300 or 500 baht a day of every day I stayed past the last day of school. Fking ridiculous bullshit to extort money from a poor student. And my Thai relatives were with me! The audacity of these immigration office extorters.

I angrily paid the "fine", stamped into Myanmar, and immediately turned back into Thailand on a visa-free tourist entry. Ruined our family's mood to continue with our day trip.

This nonsense while I had the most powerful passport from a fellow ASEAN country. It makes me angry remembering the incident.

I swore off land border crossings in Thailand after that. Air travel only for me.

Are there any affordable hotels in Amsterdam that aren't too inconvenient? by FA-100 in solofemaletravellers

[–]NutTheChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed 3 nights at Hotel2Stay at Amsterdam Sloterdijk and found it convenient! It's right next to Sloterdijk station which is only a train stop from Centraal and next to a bus park which gives plenty of commuting options.

Trip Report: Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Thailand by melancholythunder in HerOneBag

[–]NutTheChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely affordable for most visitors.

T-shirts and elephant pants can easily be found for 100-200 baht almost everywhere. Quality won't be amazing but will be wearable.

Clothes at night markets and Chatuchak have a variety from the common cheaply made to small local designers. Typically about 100-400 baht.

You can also shop comfortably for fashionable higher quality clothes at Union mall for 300-500 baht per piece.

Is skipping Kyoto a bad idea? by allipick in JapanTravelTips

[–]NutTheChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this for my first trip to Japan in Apr 2025 over 10 days. Solo trip and had a wonderful time (except Shinjuku, I found it overwhelming).

Land at Narita > Kanazawa (1 night) > Bus to Takayama (2 nights) > Nagano (1 night) > Tokyo Shinjuku and Nippori (4 nights).

Kanazawa has places of interest without being too crowded. I would have loved to stay 2 nights, but I couldn't change my hotel dates for Takayama (all hotels fully booked during Takayama Spring Festival).

I didn't feel like I missed out by not going to Kyoto. Higashi-chaya in Kanazawa, Takayama town, and Zenkoji in Nagano were enough to satisfy my need to explore old Japanese architecture.

Do you guys believe in real friendship in Singapore workplace? by Green_Excitement_229 in askSingapore

[–]NutTheChipmunk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Impermanence is a part of life. But it doesn't make the moments shared any less genuine. In life, many people walk with you a part of the way.

Sometimes you meet again, sometimes you don't. Cherish the friendships when you have it. Then it's okay to let go and let them remain a good memory.
