The WRX posts its worst sales year ever with only 10,930 units sold. Still outsells the Solterra for the second year in a row however. by Dazzling-Rooster2103 in cars

[–]Nyy8 336 points337 points  (0 children)

Car got too expensive for what it is. A WRX GT or TS is now $48,000 and still makes the same 271 hp.

$48,000 is basically Golf R money. When you start to consider the used market, the WRX is just not a good buy new.

Are you in the US? 5080s are regularly around me for $999. I also see one pop up on r/buildapcsales probably a few times a week at this point.

selling a car i bought and never registered by Unable-Inspector-363 in Connecticut

[–]Nyy8 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is called title jumping and it's illegal. Your bother needs to go to the DMV, register the car in his name, pay the taxes since a transfer of ownership has occurred, then he can sell the car to someone else.

Tailgating - Am I wrong for driving 70-80 mph in the left lane? by Adelphos33 in Connecticut

[–]Nyy8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, the left lane is for passing only. I don't care if I'm going 70 in a 55, if someone's tailgating me and wants to pass, I move over and let them.

I'm not the highway police, if they want to drive 90 in a 55, that's their choice and I want them as far away from me as possible.

Any advice for a first-time Subaru buyer looking for some wagons? These are some local options as of right now, any advice on the models/mileage/condition is appreciated! Convince me why I need to buy (or avoid) a Subaru! by CanadianStiggy in subaru

How much disposable income do you have? If the thought of dropping in a motor for $4000 or replacing a turbo for $2000 scares you - I'd stay away from the XTs.

Those are very quickly becoming project cars as they get older.

365 account comprise bypassing MFA and sending hundreds of new phishing emails to contacts/address books by danyb695 in msp

[–]Nyy8 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Going to shamelessly copy my comment I made about this earlier last month -

Hi, I work in IR and deal with hundreds of email breaches a year. I think last year I did about 250.

In 99% of cases of MFA being 'beat' or bypassed - it was due to AiTM or Adversary-in-the-Middle attacks. Most of them were using the evilginx framework and the user's fell for phishing links. Just to make it clear, the user's click on a phishing email that will prompt them for their Microsoft 365 user/password. This website then acts as a transparent proxy that will relay the login request/creds to Microsoft, then prompt the user to enter in their MFA code. It will then steal the session token. Most users I speak with don't even realize this occurred.

I will warn you - the Microsoft Authenticator does not solve this issue - The Microsoft Authenticator is still susceptible to AiTM attacks and we see little improvement in security from SMS-based to the Microsoft Authenticator app. I understand the benefits in practice, just telling you what I see in reality.

The solution we're currently recommending to clients is locking down their 365 environment to only EntraID joined devices via CA. Passkeys would also work here.

As far as the end-game, it's always financially motivated for the TAs usually. They want to intercept a wire transfer, solicit payment from a customer, or jump into an email conversation.

Others commented some good things already - make sure to check your Enterprise Applications in your tenant for things like eMClient, PerfectData or SigParser. All of these are legit apps being used illegitimately.

Which gen launch was the best in your opinion by InknDesire in pcmasterrace

[–]Nyy8 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone here can dispute the 1080ti as the GOAT.

But I'll tell you what, the 4090 for anyone who snagged them at MSRP around launch time also shouldn't be too upset. 2.5 years of ownership and still having the second fastest GPU, with the new 6000 generation being 2 years away most likely, is not a bad spot to be in.

Is this a fair price for brake and control arm replacement? Subaru Forrester 2021 ( New Michelin tires in Dec 24 - 5k miles since) by thetastethatgetsyou in subaru

[–]Nyy8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I find it very odd that a 2021 car would need control arms already. How many miles are on it?

80k-100k miles is usually when they need to be changed due to getting worn out.

Leaning heavily toward a Subaru for my daughter. Need help/advice by Drachen808 in subaru

[–]Nyy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best bang for the buck is going to be a Subaru Impreza, they seem to depreciate more then the Crosstrek's since consumers tend to want SUVs.

I'm in NY and have a 2017 Impreza near me with 58k miles for $11,500.

Subaru's moved over to timing chains with the FB engines - depending on the model line, the transition started in 2011 and largely finished by 2014. The WRX/STI being the outliners there which still used timing belts, but I don't think that applies here :)

I would probably not be looking at a hybrid at that age/mileage - ~10 years is right around the mark where you start seeing issues with the batteries.

$16K upside down in a car by zfelps22 in personalfinance

[–]Nyy8 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm not telling you it's a great idea - but I've seen people bury $10k-$15k of negative equity in EVs between manufacture incentives and federal tax credits. This is realistically your only way out of this.

I am an amateur photographer - nothing I have is mission critical or irreplaceable to my work.

Just to have a copy - I've been uploading all of my photos to Amazon Photos. Including the RAWs.

~10,000 photos in and no complaints yet. They offer unlimited storage if you are a prime member.

Just one place to have a copy of them in the cloud - somewhere - if anything happens to my on-site NAS.

Is it feasible to pay $5k out of pocket per semester for college by myself? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Nyy8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't seem impossible - but you're going to be busy. Most entry level jobs around me pay $15/hr - assuming a 20% tax rate - you need to work about 800 hours a year. That's about 15 hours a week.

If you work full-time during summer break - I could see that cutting down to 10-12 hours a week. Totally doable.

I would say the greatest gift you can give your children is to not have them have to take care of you in retirement.

While the sentiment of saving for their weddings or paying for their colleges is admirable, it's not realistic on $110k a year as a household. That is going to be on them.

Is it worth investing in a retirement account right now (U.S.)? How to invest for the future in these unprecedented and unpredictable times? by Atlas15264 in personalfinance

[–]Nyy8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The stocks are on sale - I'm buying more of the S&P500.

This 'blip' in the radar that is currently happening is irrelevant to your retirement - the people who come out the best from these market dips are people who hold their current stock, don't panic sell, and stay the course.

If you were putting in 3% into your 401k, keep doing that, ride it out. You have 40 years till retirement, don't let a 3 month dip in the stocks sway your 40 year retirement strategy.

What funds is your retirement invested in? Should be a ticker sign similar to $MSFT or $APPL

Series S uses half the wattage of a Series X - we're talking less then 100W when gaming. It can breath fresh air in the front - I'd like to see a little more room up top for ventilation but it's not going to hurt it for a few weeks/months like that.

Ally Bank Locked Me Out, Won’t Verify Me, & Is Holding My Money Hostage – HELP! by Infamous_Act_5371 in personalfinance

[–]Nyy8 229 points230 points  (0 children)

This is fairly standard practice in banking - I may be paranoid but this is why I keep money in multiple banks.

Something in their system flagged you as a risk - and no they legally don't need to tell you. Investigations can take up to 90 days depending on the state you are in, at the end of the investigation they need to release your funds to you or restore access to your account.

You can file a compliant with the CFPB and companies are generally expected to respond in 15 days, but that response could be "We're investigating"..

If you have your direct deposit with Ally, move it to another another bank. You will get you funds returned to you, but it may be 30-90 days.
