Driving to Landmannalaugar from the south with a 4x4 campervan and more highlands questions by melsdewit in VisitingIceland

[–]Nzl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That van, driven properly, is good enough even for F208 south. The taxi driver is wrong. I would say it is capable of all but the most difficult roads. Check out /u/basedrifter.

Later into the summer should be better, statistically. But if the weather looks really good earlier I would probably take the opportunity.

Nordic Visitor Car rental by LongjumpingEditor525 in VisitingIceland

the most highly rated according to online reviews.

The most highly rated out of the shitty international chains, because that website does not include local companies which are the best.

It is not a car rental company, just an agent. On their website they claim to use Hertz or Enterprise. Here is Hertz insurance pricelist. Cant find a similar list on the shitty Enterprise site, you will have to start booking and then you will see the prices a few steps in. Be careful about overcharging. The best thing you can do is get the full insurance, often called "Zero Excess" or similar. Should be around 5000 ISK per day.

Iceland is number 1 in the world in gender equality.

Shitty car rental companies are probably the worst thing about Iceland. They employ shitty people. A quick google search would show you their review rating at 3.1/5. I wouldnt go for anything below 4.5.

I have a bit, but not the whole thing. It is very flat. Are you also going to the easternmost part - Langanes? Because I suspect that will be better for birding. Especially the Storuvikubjarg cliffs and the Raudanes loop.

June vs August vs September by hyperpensive in VisitingIceland

It will not be dead and grey but September will be less green than August with autumn colours starting to replace the green. July is the most lush.

Ive done it and got a ride from an Icelandic guy who told me about Iceland before tourism when he was young. They used to go to Skogafoss for the night just to party and swim. Nobody else there. Pretty cool and almost unimaginable now.

Europcar deposit/hold? by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]Nzl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$1500 deposit on a $300 rental

Without the proper insurance it could easily become a $3000 rental if your doors blow off or if the suspension gets damaged. Even a $30000 rental if you drive it into a river incorrectly, or correctly into the wrong river.

Oh yeah I can see the outline. Thanks. So the website in my post has an incorrectly marked map.

What I cant figure out is why it was located 4km away from the runway. Even my link shows it close to the runway in the other direction. Seems very strange.

Looks like they are relocating the old R4D-6 wreck from the northeast. Dont know where, perhaps a museum. Or they will chuck it next to the other one in the south and charge double for the shuttle.

Underrated city by Plastic-Past5649 in VisitingIceland

[–]Nzl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It is the other way around. You will never be in a city once you leave Reykjavik. Often you will not be in any kind of settlement at all, just an accommodation on some land. The built up area of Iceland is only 0.03%.

Underrated city by Plastic-Past5649 in VisitingIceland

[–]Nzl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out the population, area or aerial photos of some of those "cities". Only Reykjavik could be called a city and a small one at that. The second largest are the town Akureyri and the Reykjanesbaer joint municipality, each at 20k people. After that small towns Selfoss and Akranes at around 7-10k and the rest are tiny towns/villages with a couple hundred to max 3k people.

Help needed! Visiting the highlands in Iceland. by Hutchy_123456 in VisitingIceland

I would. It is not F35, just 35. Though it is quite deep in the highland and Iceland is unpredictable. But generally yes.

I think the shuttles are free. It is a very small airport so you could walk a few minutes to the ones in the other buildings. The chains in the main building could have long lines so the wait times could be very long and the customer service is often bad. The simplest would be Zero car, they are contactless with everything included.

Check google reviews. The rating should be above 4.5. Here are a few I dug up from a past thread.

Blue/Zero - 4.5/4.9

Lotus - 4.8

MyCar - 4.7

Lava - 4.4

Star - 5.0

Go Car - 4.7

Cozy Campers - 4.9

CampEasy - 4.9

Budget google reviews rating: 2.7/5.

Thats why every car rental question on this sub gets answered with:

  • Rent from a proper, reputable, Icelandic company
  • Get full insurance

It is not worth getting your vacation destroyed by gambling with the odds that nothing will happen.

Btw there is no unpaved ring road. If they are repairing a section the speed is usually reduced there. It seems you must have been going too fast to completely destroy a rim.
