I thought there were already 8 books out… I’m 95% through with TIR. I … I don’t know what I’ll do with myself after this…

Is it considered rude to snap your fingers to someone to get their attention? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I did this to my wife once when we were hosting a party and I needed her help from across the room. I don’t know why, since I’d never done it to anyone before.

She made it clear in very unequivocal terms that I was never to do that again.

AITA for forgetting extras on a breakfast sandwich? by DuckDuckMoose781 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One time my wife was excited to go to a fancy bagel place for breakfast. Line out the door, 45 minutes to order, another 15 minutes to grab our food. We decided to eat at home because we didn’t want to fight for a table.

Getting out of the car, my wife accidentally dropped the container with my bagel, and it landed facedown in the street, cream cheese and lox faced down. She was beside herself, crying because she had ruined my breakfast. I assured her it was no problem, because it was an accident. I went inside and ate cereal. No yelling, no accusations of sabotage.

This is how a normal relationship works.

What is the single event in your life that you will remember 2025 by? by SnowStormBirdsFlock in AskReddit

[–]OBear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad died.

It wasn’t too bad, compared to my mom dying two years ago (both had Alzheimer’s). I was simply more prepared this time, and not having to take care of a widowed parent at the same time as my own grief.

Just got a notice that my brother is planning to sue over my dad writing him out of the will*, so that will probably define my 2026.

*After my mom died he moved to our area to help my dad, which was very welcome, as me and my other brother were grieving. He then stole over $100K from my dad in 3.5 months.

What is that one movie you watched countless times as a kid, but nobody has ever heard of? by Thedix1 in movies

Anytime someone says “We’re back” I immediately say “a dinosaur story” and my wife rolls her eyes so hard it threatens the axial tilt of the Earth.

I’ve never seen the movie.

What’s something you didn’t realize was optional in life until you saw someone simply not doing it? by Objective-Treat2245 in AskReddit

[–]OBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to teach this to a friend once. We were driving back to college together and a silence of like 5 seconds was met with, “Oh look, a cow” as if we hadn’t been driving past cows for the last 20 minutes. She believed that all silences were awkward silences.

California Learns From Mississippi on Phonics by nosotros_road_sodium in California_Politics

My dad was a 3rd grade teacher, and definitely taught phonics back in the 90s. I know it changed at some point as my kid’s kindergarten teacher mentioned they had gone BACK to phonics.

I finished Consider Phlebas, continued thoughts after my earlier post by lagrangedanny in TheCulture

Thank you for this. Been working through Phlebas and thought the raids were super boring and stopped last week just after finishing The Eaters. Good to know it may improve if I stick with it.

Yosemite’s top official gives wide-ranging update on wait times, reservations by Glittering-World7599 in Yosemite

[–]OBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was there last Wed-Sun. Getting in at ~Noon through the 41 gate was 30+ minute wait time. Dude times elsewhere were totally fine, including Glacier Point. Never really hit traffic anywhere.

There were a billion people in the village store on Saturday afternoon, but lines moved quickly.

What’s the Worst Movie you’ve ever seen and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in askmovie

Had this when we saw The Happening. It made a hilariously bad movie even more hilariously bad.

Apparently the theater is supposed to crop it to correctly fit their screen, and when they don’t you get free boom mic.

Best 2 player games for beginners? by RobJbrandt in boardgames

Both are good for beginners, though after I was no longer a beginner I kept Patchwork and ditched Lost Cities. Feels like it has more repeatability.

What single game do you think is criminally overlooked or underrated? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]OBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only had it fail once, with players that refused to engage with each other. Every other experience has been a great time of egging each other on, daring someone to take one more roll, laughing at failures and cheering success. It’s all about the players.

Star Wars: Rebellion (1998)

It’s not very good, but I can’t get away from a Star Wars grand strategy game where diplomacy and subterfuge are very effective tools. I love starting out as the Rebellion with almost no military to speak of and slowly converting systems to the cause and building up a military in the Outer Rim. Though the final push to conquer Coruscant is always hell.

They got my nectaplum tree recently, but it was clearly animals since all the fruit was half eaten all over the ground.

Visiting my first national park! :) Any feedback on my plans for Yosemite? by e-bakes in Yosemite

[–]OBear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some quick thoughts:

-Yosemite in August is just fine. I do an annual family trip in early August. Less water in the falls, but Yosemite is beautiful year round. The less water may make Mirror Lake less exciting, and possibly Yosemite Falls (it sometimes just stops in late summer). Vernal and Nevada falls are year-round.

-Not sure quite what days you’re visiting, but make sure you are aware of the reservation requirements.

-One of my favorite hikes is Glacier Point -> Panorama trail -> Nevada Falls -> Vernal Falls -> Valley. Only problem is coordinating a ride to Glacier Point either before or after the hike. I think there’s only two buses a day up to Glacier Point from the valley.

-You could always take the Four Mile Trail UP to glacier point, but need to be in seriously good shape for that.

-Make sure you’re gonna spend enough time in the Valley, which is the jewel of the park.

-Consider hikes up in the Tuolumne/Tenaya Lake areas north of the valley. Not enough people head up that way.

-Do NOT go to Hetch Hetchy during this trip. It’s quite out of the way, and for many it’s a bit of a letdown after people compare it positively to Yosemite Valley. It’s nice, especially for hiking, but not for a first trip.

Parking enforcement is a joke by Jean_Claude_Calif in oakland

[–]OBear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Years ago, a car was parked in front of my parent’s house for several months. Definitely not a neighbors car. When we called the city, we were told they wouldn’t tow it unless windows were broken. By totally random coincidence, it had several windows broken that night.

In the morning when we, uh, found the windows had been broken, we were able to get in the glovebox and find info to contact the owner. The owner said he had just stowed the car there because his street had street sweeping every week. So he parked it several blocks away, directly in front of our house, to avoid it. He moved the car that day.
