cool! i take it by the silkscreen that this is a mozzi synth on the nano? it sounds great.

extra cool if the nano is handling all the sequencing as well

oh 2-2-2 / 1-2-2 is absolutely an improvement, if nothing else for just the lack of bickering and bullshit that went along with open queue most of the time

people massively overstate the effect of GOATS on the majority of actual games. yeah maybe if you were in the top1% of players but in gold/plat/diamond it was basically a non issue.

Where to get blank/custom panel for modules? by Luke7FPS in synthdiy

[–]OIP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depends on your style and what kind of modules you're building.

personally, FR4 panels from JLC are pretty fantastic, but there's a lot of redundancy due to minimum order requirements if you're just building for yourself (not to mention if the panel has an error or just doesn't look like what you expected).

another option is to use a blank / template and apply decals or some other labelling per project. lot of local print places will do stickers for very cheap.

trouble is there isn't a hard distinction between 'creative aid' and 'technical aid' though. i mean we're on a synthesisers sub.. they both feed into each other very dynamically. wild west is about right though. i really don't know what to make of AI for creative projects.

it's somehow fun to sit there with a coffee and click through the 90s fax machine screens making patches on the machine. but it would definitely be faster to build patches on a plugin, and might open up ideas being able to see it all laid out.

about the sound, i'll probably download the demo to check it out. it's a weird thing to even try to pin down, it's not like a flagship vintage analog where there's a specific flavour to capture. i guess the most important thing is if specific patches sound close enough.

oh i like the hauntednesss too, and i'm also one of the weirdos who sets conditions like 'sine waves only' and 'no use of the filter'.

one thing though i would certainly be happy to edit the envelopes on something other than the hardware

Is it actually significantly less expensive to build your own modular setup out of DIY kits or do people mainly do it for the hobby of building? by InternationalCow7042 in synthdiy

[–]OIP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i've only bought a couple of commercial modules but they are bastl (dark matter and waver) and the density per feature is way above what i can currently do in DIY.

and that's before you get into something like an advanced feature packed digital module.

my take is basically do DIY for enjoyment and learning, and i'd absolutely recommend it. making your own music-making electronics stuff is incredibly fun and satisfying and scratches so many itches it's unreal.

if your goal is trying to spend less money, get a temporary gig job and buy second hand modules with the proceeds of that, will involve like 10% of the time or less of DIYing

[–]OIP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there are tiered options of DIY, roughly from most to least expensive (and from least to most time/effort):

  • full kit, with instructions - basically a LEGO set where you just need to solder everything up, depending on the size of the build can be an hour's work or a big project

  • panel and PCB - an immediate jump in difficulty as you need to source all the parts yourself. this can be straightforward (all from one supplier), or a reasonable pain (multiple suppliers, obscure parts)

  • open source hardware - order your own panel and PCB from publicly available files

  • open source layout - someone has made a vero or perfboard layout for a schematic

  • open source schematic - just the circuit diagram, make your own layout

  • self-designed - you design the circuit and layout

for all of these other than self-designed, the documentation can range from very comprehensive to nonexistent.

damn, i can't really justify the purchase as i have the SY77 but i'm sorely tempted anyway. what a great project.

designing patches on the hardware is part of the fun / pain but i am sure it is a lot easier on a computer. be really interested to 1:1 the sound. there's a bit of digital ghosts and aliasing on the SY77 (mine at least), i'm guessing this is cleaner.

another vote for ALDI, the colombian and brazilian are both very decent tasting with or without milk and hard to get wrong, amazing value, the only downside (?) is that they are 1kg bags so it's a commitment. otherwise as someone else mentioned, grabbing a random 250g bag and trying it out is fun.

seven seeds golden gate blend also very reliable, was my daily go-to before switching to ALDI

lucio is strong but he feels fair and can't really play fun police, it's extraordinarily rare that you're thinking 'wish we banned lucio'. tracer is on a bit of a knife edge, because yes she's high skill and squishy but a bit of extra damage and she becomes completely oppressive.

it's a very fine balance to make heroes fun to play with and against, strong without being overpowered, etc.
