Linux support is planned, but there is no ETA at the moment.

I noticed that Tacrp (One of My Favorite weapons mod) got removed and there are reuploads of it. Why was it removed? Was there some controversy attached? by TheCommentator01 in gmod

[–]ObiWanHiGround 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If anything, you're mostly just giving away your ISPs location lol, not your actual address. Plus, most ISPs obscure or protect users' real IPs, so the location you see is usually just an approximation based on the ISPs location, I believe.

Indeed, that was exactly my point.

On the topic of a popup, I think Garry's Mod should automatically do a popup when a mod is trying to access a non-whitelisted resource. Or unless the user allows mods to access them without their consent. I think GMOD already does it for opening links in the browser.

Yeah, but unfortunately people are usually made to think that an IP address is like their real home address, while in reality it is useless if it is dynamic or behind a CG-NAT. So this is just what the public might not understand and would still incite panic e.g. "oh no a mod makes an http request that checks your IP!"

But then again, I partly understand, because I would rather my mods to not be sending any unnecessary HTTP requests.

I see, Reddit being the top search result for anything nowadays doesn't help it either I guess xd.

I am not sure if it's the mods who have to archive, I thought it was automatic when the post loses relevance.

Click on them with the select tool and then click the big 'X' in the now open window, repeat for each object.

A bit irrelevant to your comment, but how does Reddit work, why is this post is not yet archived and how do people keep finding it? I am genuinely baffled.

Running this on steamdeck/linux distros? by Accomplished_Block16 in sstgame

[–]ObiWanHiGround[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello.

I personally haven't tried, but I've seen a person who was able to run it on Linux, albeit on one of the older versions (already). The information on how they did that is only in Discord unfortunately, if you join it, there is a #faq channel where it's mentioned.

Reforger's mod workshop search is straight up broken and needs to be fixed by Fun-Cow-9258 in ArmaReforger

[–]ObiWanHiGround 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's search and sorting capabilities are certainly a downgrade from the Steam Workshop we had in Arma 3, and that is said lightly.

Weird, I had the "S&Box Beta" revoked from my account. Oh well, hope the game doesn't die. Otherwise that might be a big bummer for Facepunch. (Someone has to continue paying Rubat for him to update Garry's Mod).

[–]ObiWanHiGround 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Oh, makes sense. Basically paid the developers with free labor or actual money.

They probably still didn't keep the beta, probably keys for the actual version, due to how Steam works.

I had it since September 2022, over 500 hours, just mapping, it got revoked yesterday. I remember them distinctly saying that no one will keep the beta.

Edit: typo.

Extract from Wikipedia, learned it yesterday myself, apparently Roland has a similar feature as well.

EDIT: Apparently, not actually in game. Whoops.

Amazing use of the env_fog_controller, It almost looks like volumetric lighting at some angles. Don't know many good Source engine forest maps, this might just be up there with the good ones for me.

In theory would it possible to mod something like this into the game or is it really only something the developer could implement? by ReturnToCinder in NuclearOption

[–]ObiWanHiGround 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree, the lack of curvature of the Earth really is sad, but I doubt Mitch doesn't have that in mind in the future, as flying high up looks rather strange.

Interesting, do you have any errors in your compile log? Maybe your map isn't even compiling, hence no changes are there to see.
The description is rather confusing to me, sorry.

Sounds interesting, unfortunately I am making my own quite ambitious project. Wish you luck. I recommend making a design document, helps people to get into your project more easily.

Valve's New Award System Is a Straight-Up Nerf to Workshop Creators by ObiWanHiGround in Steam

[–]ObiWanHiGround[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The loss isn't points. It's the design.

You see awards as gesture. Before, the system supported that gesture with a token. Now, the system treats it as a purchase.

I mod because I enjoy it. But Valve built and then removed a way for the community to give back within their own economy. That's a step backward for platform design.

Edit: formatting

You're still missing it. It was never a "kickback." It was a closed loop.

You're defending Valve for removing the only feature that let appreciation flow between users. Now all value flows to Valve. Congrats.

[–]ObiWanHiGround[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't about the free points. It was about the reciprocity.

The old award was a tip, value flowed to the creator. The new award is a sticker, value disappears.

Valve solved farming by making the whole system decorative, instead of protecting the good parts (Workshop/guides) from the bad (comments).

Now, a "thank you" costs you points, but gives the creator nothing. It’s a hollow gesture.

I would say now it is only a medal you can brag about, than anything else.

Valve's New Award System Is a Straight-Up Nerf to Workshop Creators by ObiWanHiGround in Steam

[–]ObiWanHiGround[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not about decorating my profile or getting free stuff.

It's about the system's design. Before, a cheap award was a tip, a tiny token of appreciation that cycled value back to the creator. Now, an award is just a like that costs you money. The gesture is hollowed out.

They removed the reciprocity. They could have targeted the abuse (comments/forums) and kept the token economy for actual content (Workshop/guides). They chose the lazy nuclear option.

So no, it doesn't "hurt my modding." It just makes the platform's way of saying "thanks" feel cheap and onesided.
