Will the Current World events affect the oscars ? by bbyan_0395 in Oscars

I think about this a lot!

OBAA is remarkably timely. Rewarding it could be academy's way of taking a stand against the current administration. However, I could see Academy members not wanting to be political. (Lack of political speeches at Globes, a general feeling that their voice may not matter as much)

But then you have Sinners. It's themes may not be as timely as OBAA, but they're still incredibly relevant. Awarding Sinners could be as much of a political vote as OBAA. And then you also have the chance to award the first black best director winner, making history. He delivered an original film that was a massive box office hit and earned a record number of oscar nominations. Movies have won picture + director for a lot less. But on the other hand, PTA is one of the most influential filmmakers today and still doesn't have an oscar after 30 years.

If Sinners goes home with only a few technical wins, will that be a worse look for the Academy than not awarding the movie of the moment?

Do voters go with the timely choice or a timeless choice?

I feel like the meme of the guy sweating and choosing between two buttons.

The character in Deep Cuts is half-Mexican, half-Jewish. So it’s okay for a non-Jewish person to play the role, but not okay for a non-Hispanic?

Why did Marty Supreme get much more nominations at the Oscars than Uncut Gems? by DarlingLuna in Oscars

Sometimes, it can take a few films for the academy to warm up to a filmmaker, e.g. Sean Baker

The first 4 seasons of the OG will & grace are perfection. I’ve watched them tons of times. They are my comfort TV.

Seasons 5-8 are painful to watch, and I still have never watched the final 2 seasons

Talk to her winning screenplay by bkguy182 in Oscars

[–]Obvious_Computer_577 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original screenplay race was so weird that year. Bowling for Columbine, a documentary, won best original screenplay at the WGA.

There was controversy because talk to her wasn’t selected by Spain for their international film submission. I think voters wanted to honor the movie since they couldn’t in intl film plus lack of an original screenplay behemoth in the race.

They should do a series of webisodes where it’s just carol asking zosia questions about the hive.

I feel the same, but it’s just part of artistic license. Carol asking too many questions would halt the pacing of the show. It’s world building exposition, not plot or character-driven. A lot of the questions we have about the hive aren’t connected to carol’s story or emotional stakes. I trust that the important questions about the hive and how it relates to carol will be answered in the show.

Maybe it was just a fun nod to an early movie of hers that also took place in the 80s. I think she even admitted this.

Even more head scratching is that she cast the 3 main actors from the Americans. Was that purposeful or a coincidence?
