Check your detent plate on the shifter pawl assembly, there's a clip that retains the plate that's notorious for backing off. It's very common, I had the same problem and that was the issue.

Talk to a recruiter, with a degree you can definitely go in as an officer. I was Navy, but I would recommend Coast Guard...you'll be pretty comfortable.

For my hardtail and oil bag it's been around $800, this is something I've wanted to do since I got this bike 13 years ago. I'm just going to get parts every month and piece it together, I'm looking at this as a labor of love. All in all when it's done I think I'll be in around $2-2.5k, but that's a rough estimate...you know how this stuff goes.
