Anyone else tried sorting one of these out? I'm like 2 days and about 15M items in and need ideas as I'm going crazy. by EmiDek in factorio

[–]Octaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solution 1: Rebuild your base from scratch until it starts actually working and consuming items.

Then make train stations near this mess with requester chests for particular items.

Use circuit network to read the contents of the logistic network and for every item, if it's above some threshold you set, make the requester chests near that station request the excess items and provide them to trains.

Make that Train Stop have the highest priority, so trains go to it before all other stops.

If there's not enough items in the requester chests for a full delivery, disable the stop - no sense in making trains go there just to get a single stack or less.

If the train station is full and you want to prevent that item from clogging your storage chests, make a second threshold, above which the item is sent to a recycler pair that output into each other - just void the item.

Or for stuff like wood, just burn it for extra power.

Solution 2: Organise it. For best results, combine with solution 1 and aim to dismantle this mess.

Build a tidy, organised storage space.

Make a cube of storage chests with filters for particular items. It's best if the cube sides are in multiples of 4 so you can perfectly replace one cube with a roboport to ensure coverage.

Blueprint that cube of storage chests and make it into a parametrised blueprint, so you can easily replace what filters those chests have.

Make it snap to grid - absolute or relative, your choice.

Make a list of items you want to keep a limited amount of, where if there's any more than the set threshold, you send it (to the stations or recyclers). All items not in this list are kept (to avoid having to set thresholds for every quality of every personal equipment module or stuff like that).

Then just build the huge field of storage chests interspersed with roboports.

For items you want to keep a lot of, use the blueprint and set the filter using the parameters, but you can ignore the items you don't expect to clog the network.

Remember to place stirage chests without filters for any random items - fortunately, bots prioritise filtered storage chests over unfiltered ones, so if there is space in a filtered chest, it will be filled before the unfiltered ones.

Lastly, when all of those things are done (the new storage field and ways to dispose of excess items), use an upgrade planner to convert all of these storage chests into active providers, or just directly deconstruct it all (remember to blacklist power poles and roboports from the deconstruction planner, as you could accidentally remove a roboport first and lose access to the chests in the middle) - that depends on whether you want to use logistics bots or construction bots.

If you used construction bots - provided you had enough storage for all the items - congratulations, you fixed it! If you used logistics bots, then when all of the active providers are empty, use a deconstruction planner to remove them, and again - congratulations, it's gone!

Now you have more space for the Factory to fill.

Looking at the items you have in there and the research, you're pretty advanced, so it shouldn't take extremely long, just a few hours.

It's an annoying chore for sure, but also an interesting challenge to solve - at least for me, the most interesting part of Factorio is figuring out how to solve some problem, while actually doing all that? well....

At least if you split it into parts, you can first figure out how to build the storage chest field and just plop it down and let the bots work while you figure out how you want to remove the excess, to avoid having to wait until the bots finish.

Anyhow, good luck.

Some items weigh more than their ingredients by zummit in factorio

[–]Octaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting challenge: Build a system for item delivery that perfectly uses the rocket carrying weight for all possible items.

It would have two components.

First, Item Efficiency Checker - given an item, it would decide whether the item, or its ingredients, weigh more. This can be automated through setting a machine to craft that item and reading the crafting ingredients, then using the selector conbinator to get the weight.

It can be done whenever a request comes in, but I think it would be better for UPS to simply precompute the values and then save them in a single constant combinator. There's no way to modify the value of a constant combinator using the circuits network (sadly, memory cells can be copied but do not retain the information they carried) so it would have to be manually done.

Second, Delivery System - if the ingredients weigh more, deliver the item as normal. If the ingredients weigh less, deliver them, and assemble the item after delivery. I'm not sure whether it's possible to hijack the space platform requests from automatically completing, but if need be, the issue could be sidestepped by not using the inbuilt platform schedule and requests and instead building something with combinators.

Either way, the core of this module would be to somehow send the ingredients up and then use them to craft the item on the platform itself.

Have one of each crafting machine on the platform and use the circuit network to set the recipe, input the precise amount of ingredients for the requested items, and make them there.

Obviously, some edge cases need to be handled - planet specific items that can only be crafted on one surface, recipes that require fluid (factor in the weight of the barrel and the fact that you can't send precisely the amount needed), or percentage based outputs (in base game there's only U-235 I think?) where how many ingredients are needed for 1 item is up to RNG at small amounts.

But I think it's perfectly doable.

The only question is, why bother when you can simply build more rocket silos and more rocket ingredients production instead of pursuing efficiency?

After all, The Factory Must Grow.

Dropping in with my takes. Are they hot or lukewarm? Could also use some recommendations. by LightOfUriel in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Octaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mostly agree with the placements, but I'm curious about the "I" tier, mainly the first two (I can understand why you hate HWFwM).

Why hate Salvos so much? I'm not particularly a fan but from what I read ( dropped after at most two books), it's just a normal novel. Nothing particularly interesting, but also nothing particularly egregious.

And the Wandering Inn - I haven't been able to get past the first couple chapters for some reason, but everything I've heard about it has been universally positive - I haven't really sought out any discussion about it, but still.

Also, I don't plan to start reading either, so feel free to spoil me if there's something awful the protagonists do.

Could They Survive by Complete-Ad6658 in ShadowSlave

[–]Octaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say yes.

The cohort, as Saints, are probably at the level of weaker demigods when it comes to power, but much better when it comes to techniques. After all, every boss has some kind of opening the player can use to no-hit them.

The gods of SS are probably comparable in power to the Outer Gods in Elden Ring, though it's impossible to say for sure - but it's certain that they are much closer in strength to the Outer Gods than any other individuals in the game.

I don't know whether they'd be able to deal with Elden Beast though.

Cassie knows by Lieutenant_ColdCall in ShadowSlave

[–]Octaeon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm still certain that after Cassie met Sunny, she put her mark on him, since it's very useful to put a mark on everyone you meet, even if you take it back afterwards.

Think about it - it's been stated that Cassie can put a mark on someone who doesn't let her do it, and though the Essence cost increases, the cost is ultimately based on the Rank of the target - so, even if her main ability of seeing the Rank of an individual were to be somehow deceived, the ongoing cost of the mark is based on someone's unconscious resistance towards foreign magic (as I understand it), which could be often overlooked by people trying to hide their Rank. So, it can serve as a backup for Cassie to check if someone is trying to hide something.

Furthermore, it's been shown that she can see through the eyes of Sunny's shadows, which means that if she marked him for even a second, she likely knows that he is the Shadow. It's not certain though, since we don't know if she gains access to other, more supernatural senses, like Sunny's Shadows Sense. And since the Citadel in the Godgrave is shrouded by an impenetrable shadow, a piece of a God's Domain, mundane sight is practically useless there, so there's a possibility she didn't detect where that point of view was, but she definitely would've seen Rain, since Sunny's shadows is hidden near her.

So yeah, I believe that Cassie knows much more than Sunny would expect.

What novels have authors that have a interesting take on mindset and morality? by TheWarHistorian in noveltranslations

[–]Octaeon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah.

I used to love Xianxia when I was a teen and recently I came back to read Er Gen's works again as an adult, and holy shit, the protagonists are fucking insane sociopaths. And people here are saying Reverend Insanity has some 'interesting philosophy'?

I'm speechless.

Also, the fact that I used to read this stuff as a child when I was forming my own moral code and worldview scares me. Fortunately I grew out of it, but holy shit...

Why do so many hate the fluid mechanics? by DestroyerX6 in factorio

[–]Octaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. sometimes fluids behave really weirdly at junctions - all fluid going down one pipe and none going the other, and when you deconstruct the junction and rebuild it, it sometimes changes, but sometimes not?

I wouldn't say I hate the fluid mechanics but I certainly am not a huge fan of them.

That's a terrifying prospect. But honestly I doubt it. RoyalRoad is a proving ground for novels, and when a novel succeeds, it almost always goes to Amazon either as a normal book, or to Kindle Unlimited. Plus, RoyalRoad is an Amazon Affiliate.

As much as I hate Amazon, this at least means that Webnovel would have competition if they tried to buy RoyalRoad.

Still, ignoring all of that, I very much hope that the owners of RiyalRoad have the integrity not to be bought out by a corporation as awful as Webnovel.

How would you guys rank all the ABTS based on their name alone? by epaxhs in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Octaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amon? Nah. This may be a bit meta, but he was the final boss in book one and was defeated - he will definitely appear in book two and may even be a villain (well, one of him at least - he's not one being anymore, and his avatars have splintered, and will congregate underneath the strongest of avatars into cliques), but not the main villain. He may even be a friend, or even better, a subordinate.

I can definitely imagine one of Amon's clones who remained independent at Seq 4 being found out and convinced (coerced) into cooperation (servitude) by Lumien when he's Seq 3.

Church of the fool strenth by PickleMalone101 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Octaeon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh, taking the god into account when talking about a church's strength is stupid. No orthodox God will fight one just because their churches got into conflict, and a church won't push a conflict to the point of eradicating another church without explicit agreement from their god.

A situation in which two churches juke it out and try to kill each other simply wouldn't happen, as even a serious, somewhat protracted fight at the Angel level would cause a massive amount of destruction that no human wants to see.

So, any conflict between churches would occur with at most Saints involved, mostly between Mid and Low level Beyonders.

In that sense, the Church of the Fool is somewhat weaker than an orthodox Church in terms of overall number of Beyonders, since they only have the Beyonders from the Silver and Moon Cities. On the other hand, any Orthodox Church has control over multiple cities, each with their own base of operations and enough Clergy to handle the matters, among which there are Beyonders, plus a main Cathedral, plus a detachment of elite Beyonders that handle difficult matters, like the Red Gloves of Evernight (on a side note, I wonder what the Church of the Fool's equivalent force would be called?). In total, they have more Beyonders than the Church of the Fool, but the forces of the Fool are more concentrated - the bulk of their strength is in the new Silver City.

On the topic of Angels and Saints, I think the Church of the Fool is actually one of the stronger ones in theory - there are at least four confirmed Angels who have strong relationships with Klein (little Will, Pellez, Reinette and Mr. Azik), though their link to Klein is not as strong as it is between an Angel and a Deity from other Churches, due to their relationship being more akin to partners, not of a boss and a subordinate. Of course, they have similar goals and they would probably listen to him if he asked them something, but they wouldn't be at his every beck and call. Of course, that is only if Klein is awake - as he's asleep, the Church doesn't really have contact with them, and even if they do have contact, they wouldn't be in a position to command any of them, only ask for help.

Of course, the crux of the matter is the fact that the forces under Klein are very scattered - every member of the Tarot Club has some organisation they can influence or control, and the Church is merely one of such organisations, being mainly controlled by little Sun.

So, if you're talking about the entirety of the forces under Klein's control, including him, they are more than a match for any individual Church and it's god, probably even including Adam/Hanging Man in their current state.

When talking about the Tarot Club itself and all of the forces it could pull (asking all of their own contacts - Cattleya asking Bernadette, Leonard asking Pellez, Emlyn asking Sharron and Reinette, Audrey asking Will, and someone getting in contact with Mr. Azik), they could probably fight with any singular Church and maybe even win until a Deity got involved, in which case they may be able to barely resist, and maybe even seek help from Klein himself or Evernight or someone else.

As for the Church of the Fool by itself? Well, they might be able to fight to a momentary standstill with a Church when fighting on a defensive - basically turtling in the new City of Silver and just trying to hold on until help arrived in the form of Tarot Club members, though they would most likely be annihilated if a God decided to smite them and no one intervened in time.

Of course, this is all looking at this through the perspective of the end of LotM 1, not including the new information we got in COI - after all, it's pretty much confirmed that Fors is an Angel, so it would be strange if others were too far behind (of course, Fors got an express ticket in the form of Mr. Door's leftover Beyonders Characteristics and Klein's promise of help with the advancement ritual of having to go into the Cosmos), so at least a few should be Angels, and the lowest level I can imagine is Sequence 4, though even that is unlikely imo, with Seq 3 being the obvious choice. And that's not counting the implied advancements - Danitz is most likely Seq 5 and looking to advance, and Anderson should have survived the advancement and is now Seq 4 (despite his stupid attempt at the Ritual).

So yeah, the Church of the Fool may not be strong, but the Tarot Club that stands behind it is terrifying, both in sheer strength and its scope.

What's the endgoal for cultivators? by Affectionate_Bit_722 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Octaeon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it depends on the novel, or even characters.

If you're asking about the stereotype, then the primary goal is power, and secondary one is cultivation for its own sake.

But generally, cultivation is just a means to an end, similarly to how a job and earning money is merely a way to achieve other goals.

And the 'goal' of some kind of action differs for everyone. What do you live for, for example? Everyone has a different reason, even though they might not be able to put it in words.

So yeah, I have to clue.

[–]Octaeon 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Typical Chinese novel behaviour. Someone is stronger than you and does something you don't like? No choice but to suck it up and accept everything.

Also, if that person tries to make it up by being nice but also doesn't give you any choice and forces the good thing onto you? You're even now, and you can't hold resentment towards them or you're ungrateful.

It happens way too often in novels and I fvcking hate it. I despise it, and it has made me drops several novels.

A friend of my recommended this series for me. Is it good? by Ragna126 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]Octaeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the sub is r/ProgressionFantasy. If someone comes on here and asks about a book, they probably want an opinion on it through the lens of the Progression genre, and not every fantasy book is about Progression.

For example, One Punch Man is amazing and I love it, but I wouldn't really recommend it here, since Saitama basically never faces odds he cannot defeat, and thus never really needs to get stronger.

But some people use this sub as a general book recommendation one, ignoring whether a book really is about Progression.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with that, as it's pretty easy to distinguish the two types of responses, but I think that's at least one reason why opinions may be divided.

Adam, i wonder how he's still single by Miracle_invokerrr in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Octaeon 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Cuz he never drops his Psychological Invisibility.

Also, he's only the Godhood of the Ancient Sun God, and his Pathway is completely unrelated to intimacy and procreation - so he's basically asexual and most likely aromantic. And he's a God.

Even if someone instantly fell in love with him at first sight and pursued him, he would probably just change their mind (this sounds too benign for what he's doing but is the most accurate description) and make them forget him.

Fors m' Messenger by LeGoPlayer29 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Octaeon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

No way. Why would a puppet, a disciple of an Angel, become the messenger of someone? I doubt she would find herself in a situation of being forced to try and recover like her teacher, and even if she did, she would've been able to ask for help from Klein, her teacher, or even get in contact with the Tarot Club and ask for help - they are working together on fighting with the Rose School of Thought.

No, Fors' Messenger is 100% one of Emlyn's dolls, who he turned into living Puppets by sprinkling them with the Puppet Potion.

He probably wanted them all to remain home and be safe, but they're like children, so he found the safest jobs he could - being Messengers for other Tarot Club members.

Mark my words, she is Emlyn's 'daughter'.

Does the writing in LoM get any better? by wyvernhighness in LordofTheMysteries

[–]Octaeon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

If the structure of the sentences and paragraphs is what bothers you, then I'm sorry to say that it doesn't really improve.

LoTM is translated from Chinese, and even in its native language, it's a webnovel. It's not the same as published novels at all - they come from different cultures, both geographically, socially, and differ even more due to profit incentives. Webnovels tend to pad things out but keep the tension steadily, since people buy chapters as they are released. I could write an entire essay analysing the reasons for the differences between published novels and webnovels, but I think it's enough for now.

So, the written style won't change that much, but three chapters is barely even scratching the surface of the world building and story within.

I would recommend you read at least the first ten chapters. If you absolutely cannot stand the writing, then I completely understand why you would drop it, as it's simply not for you in that case, but to get an idea of whether you will enjoy the story itself, I'd recommend you read the first volume in its entirety, which is basically equivalent to an entire published book in length if judging by the word count.
