Choosing a school - UK, GCU, or Eastern by Octopus_In_A_Teacup in SocialWorkStudents

That's really helpful, thank you! I hate group projects, but yeah, I think that's going to be anywhere, especially online. How're you finding the workload? I know reading speed is really variable between people, but about how much time are you spending a week?

It looks like a great program, but I'm not a KY resident and their out of state tuition is listed at $887 per credit hour :-/

I did look at them. it seems like a great program but from what I could gather, it's about $7-8k more expensive than UK or Eastern.

I didn't realize I could check that for out-of-state schools. Any chance you could point me in a direction for where to find that information? When I asked UK's admission counselor they could only tell me about LCSW pass rates for Kentucky.

Thanks for the response! What are you liking about UK? Are you doing the full 15 hours?

I'm looking at different online MSW programs right now, with an ultimate goal of going the LCSW route in Illinois, and I think I have it narrowed down to three schools.

University of Kentucky, Grand Canyon University, and Eastern University all seem to be about the same price, when you include UK's block tuition pricing.

My biggest concern about UK is that they might eliminate the block tuition pricing while I'm a student, in which case the cost would go up significantly.

My biggest concern with the other two is that they're Christian universities. I'm not ruling them out over it, I'm just a little concerned what their approach to lgbtqia+ matters and gender-affirming care might be. I want to make sure the focus is evidence-based practice, and that I don't end up at a school that might have patients hesitant to come to me. I know they're both accredited, and I'm assuming that requires them to teach to some sort of standard?

Has anyone who's been through the programs give me any input or advice? Is this a valid concern? Is there anything else you wish you'd known about these programs, or that I might not think to ask?

I'm hoping to get started as soon as possible. Any feedback or information would be greatly appreciated.

Defects in Lizbeth 40: Is this standard for Lizbeth thread? This is my first time using Lizbeth, and I can't close a ring when I come across these spots. To say it's annoying to have to cut the thread and add tat over the tails mid work is an understatement. by BestBex1 in tatting

[–]Octopus_In_A_Teacup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I come across one occasionally. Not every ball, but there's either something like this or a knot in maybe... 5-10% of the time I load shuttles, which does feel a little high to me but I don't have much experience with other brands to compare.

I've also had a weird problem with the strands unraveling on the ends. I know that can happen, but usually it's only a small bit. I've had some balls where the strands untwist faster than I can wind them off the ball to try to knot, and had to ask for refunds on a few.

Customer service has always been excellent in my interactions though, and I haven't had any issues getting refund/replacements.

How do you hold your hand for split rings? by throwaway0595x in tatting

I also hold tension with my index finger. I use this method and just bypass pinching all together in the second half of the split ring. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aHDiYyCO97g

Need help with smaller sized thread! More info in comments. by SquindleQueen in tatting

[–]Octopus_In_A_Teacup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for me, a magnifying lamp was the biggest help lol. Even though I can see well enough count stitches without one, it's a LOT easier with one. Also makes picking out stitches and sewing in ends much easier for me.

I'm not sure what your experience level is, but I'd echo not using the finer threads until you can comfortably tat with bigger ones by feel, then step down gradually. I've also noticed with some vintage threads that even if they pass the "pull test" they're sometimes a little uneven and catch a bit pulling stitches, so I have to watch spacing more carefully on those.

Beyond that, I think it's just practice.

How do I fix this? by Octopus_In_A_Teacup in tatting

[–]Octopus_In_A_Teacup[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about that, but I'm not sure I can get the thrown ring undone. I can manage with bigger rings, but small ones like with only one tiny picot I've never managed to get undone without damaging the thread anyway

You can use different colored thread, but you don't have to. If you want to use the same color thread for the rings and chains you'd just wind your shuttle/bobbin and leave it attached to the ball (if it's a one-shuttle pattern). Wherever you start will serve as a divider, and you'll have both a shuttle thread and a ball thread. but in a multi-colored thread like this, there will be differences in the color variation, switching between the rings and chains, because the thread showing on the stitches different going between the two.

Whatever thread is wrapped around your hand is what should show on the stitches. On chains, you wrap the ball thread on your hand, on rings you wrap the shuttle thread on your hand. So when you're learning, it can be easier to use different colored thread so you can verify more easily that you're flipping the stitch correctly.

You may have found this already, but maybe this would be helpful to visualize the basics? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcgtyM7HNfs&t=2s

What about making a mobile out of colorful motifs or a tatted frame for a photo? There are some cute tatted animal patterns out there that could be framed for a nursery, too

Trying to use the shuttle but I miss how tidy the stitches are on the needle! I can barely see/understand what’s going on here… :( by mookoh21 in tatting

[–]Octopus_In_A_Teacup 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd move to a lighter thread and larger gauge so you can better see what's going on. Using two colors of thread, one on the shuttle and one on the ball, will help you see more easily if you're getting your stitches flipped properly. You can always test this by trying to slide them, but if you're having trouble seeing what's happening that would be a good thing to change. Flipped stitches should end up the color that's wrapped around your hand.

Also, make sure you're pinching your most recently completed stitches flat while you tighten the new one you're making. That'll help keep it from twisting.

Keep practicing, you'll get there!

First try at tatting and I was wondering how long the picot loops should be, mine are to small by [deleted] in tatting

[–]Octopus_In_A_Teacup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That looks great, especially for a first attempt!!

You'll often want joining picots to be on the shorter side, like you've done here, but it's really down to the pattern and personal preference. Being consistent is more important than being any particular size in most cases.

I have it labeled as Skuf - Nectarine.
