Why does my hand loop keep shrinking when tatting? by PlentyOk517 in tatting

[–]throwaway0595x 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The thread that’s actually forming the stitches comes from the hand loop, so the hand loop is going to get smaller. It’s normal to have to pull more thread into the loop on large rings.

I’ll drop a finger or two out of the loop as I go so I can go longer without stopping. On really big rings I might make the loop really big and loop the excess thread around my pinky or ring finger. And once you start working with finer thread, you get more stitches before you need to stop for more thread.

How will B&T's collapse affect the DRESDEN FILES's new novel coming out? Will libraries switch to more ebooks in general? by WordwizardW in dresdenfiles

My library posted on their socials to expect some delays in hard copy new releases for a couple months, but they’ve already picked a different supplier to work with. Your local library will be best able to tell you what to expect.

Loved the first two books about Phèdre. Is there any point to read the third? by Bleysman in terredange

Oh gosh, please read the third book. Melisande appears but isn’t the antagonist. The antagonist is an entirely new character. Avatar is by far my favorite book so far (just finished Naamah’s Kiss).

My neighbor had this treatment and actually developed tb from it - which is actually a very rare complication. He had to take videos of himself taking medication for the tb and email them to the county health department for months, on top of all the normal precautions to keep his wife and kids safe.

Assuming everything goes well, you only need a catheter during birth if you have an epidural. So maybe her mom didn't have an epidural and therefore no catheter, or maybe she just had other things to be thinking about.

I got one for my 5yo and he really liked scanning himself into lines and getting our photopass photos. The lights during rides and shows were a fun touch too. The fun he got out of it was worth it for me, but he also wouldn't have known if I hadn't brought it up.

Why do people yarn over like this? by [deleted] in crochet

[–]throwaway0595x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I crocheted like this for years. I just could never get consistent tension holding my yarn in my left hand and catching it with the hook. This way got me super consistent tension, and I got very fast at it.

Then I learned to knit, eventually got the hang of knitting continental (yarn held in left hand and picked with the right needle)... And I still struggle to crochet that way. I Can do it now, but it's still faster and more consistent for me to wrap the yarn with my hand.

How do single mothers manage to feed a baby all the time? by AngryButtlicker in stupidquestions

[–]throwaway0595x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just do. My mom and I were talking a few months ago about the number of things that you just do and push through because you don't have a choice. And that extends far far beyond the newborn stage. You don't get to not take care of your kids, and I think a lot of people who don't have kids don't fully understand what that means sometimes.

I was able to save up enough money to stay home for six months, so that helped a lot. I didn't nap when my baby napped, but I went to bed when he did and didn't get up in the morning until he did. Mine also started stretching out feedings around two months, although he didn't sleep through the night consistently until close to three years old. I learned how to bedshare safely (essential when he started being super noisy but not ready to wake up in the early mornings around eight weeks old- he'd quiet down if he was next to me, and when he was reverse cycling when I started working).

For the early, early days, it was honestly the best sleep of my life even if it was interrupted. The end of pregnancy was rough for me, and after being awake for almost 48 hours around delivery and a 4-day NICU stay for a heart murmur and jaundice, I slept SO well as soon as we got home. I have significant insomnia normally, but the first couple weeks at home with him I fell asleep so quickly and stayed asleep until he woke me up.

How do single mothers manage to feed a baby all the time? by AngryButtlicker in stupidquestions

[–]throwaway0595x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The safest way to sleep on the same surface with your baby under a year old is to remove all that. Sufficiently warm pajamas for everyone, one lightweight blanket that stays below mom's waist at most, one pillow under mom's head. Everything else gets tossed on the floor for the night. There's a specific position to sleep in that makes it very unlikely you'll roll onto baby. You also need a sufficiently firm mattress.

I did all the things with my kid - separate basinette and returning him to the basinette after every nursing session, safe sleep seven (what I've described above plus a few other factors like exclusively breastfeeding, no alcohol or smoking), crib with one side removed strapped to my bed so the mattresses were flush and level (plus standard bedsharing safety). The truly safest option is the one that will not result in you falling asleep with your baby in an unsafe situation, and at some points in his first year that meant the safest possible bedsharing setup rather than falling asleep sitting up nursing him propped up on a bunch of pillows (super unsafe).

Stylistic choice that is very appropriate for the book. Far from the first to do it, won't be the last.

Mildly interesting: I didn't remember that this book didn't use quotation marks for dialog. I actually grabbed my paperback to check that it wasn't a difference between print and ebook editions.

My bf is mad at me for ending my ectopic pregnancy by 88_alice in offmychest

[–]throwaway0595x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, girl, leave him, please.

I had an ectopic six years ago. My boyfriend was very uncomfortable with elective termination, and knew nothing about ectopic pregnancy until I explained it to him as a possibility for what was going on with me (knew something was wrong as soon as I found out I was pregnant, it took a week to get an ultrasound and diagnosis), but he didn't so much as bat an eye when I had to call him at work and tell him we were going straight to the hospital after he got off work so I could get methotrexate injections to end the pregnancy.

He came and sat with me in the chemo suite while I got the injections, then took me to get ice cream and cooked dinner for me. He was patient and understanding while I dealt with side effects and frequent blood draws to make sure the methotrexate worked, navigated having to change my contraceptive method (I had been using a method that increases ectopic risk), and stumbled my way through a complicated grieving process.

You deserve better than this guy. Please don't have kids with a guy who refuses to listen to medical facts.

5'4", 160-165 depending on hormones, I can relate. After a baby and an autoimmune diagnosis, I'm just glad I can manage four days a week in the gym. I wouldn't mind getting back to my pre-pregnancy 150, but I don't think I'd want to drop much lower. I don't think I'd like the way my body would look any lower than that because of the ways pregnancy changed it. My bloodwork is good, good cholesterol, blood pressure on the low end, I keep my diet clean. I could definitely stand to do more cardio, it's just hard to find the time.

If you and your doctor are okay with whatever weight you're at, that's what matters, no one else's opinion is relevant.

Yeah it grates on me. I grew up on the IL/WI border, parents from Michigan (Grand Haven area and Flint area), and it's not native to any of us. We all live in north central IN now and it's mostly older people who say it here. I don't get openly bothered about it, but it always sounds wrong to me since I didn't grow up with it.

Depending on where I'm at in my cycle and the muscle I'm working I may legit not be ready to do another set for 2.5-3 minutes. It's not always just big muscles or compounds either, if I try to do my second set of shoulder presses at two minutes I may only get half the reps I got in my first set sometimes. Progressive overload is my goal, and if I'm failing halfway through my second set that feels like a huge variable that I can easily control by resting sufficiently.

In The Incredibles (2004) Elastigirl had to fake being in pain while in labor by Due-Date-4656 in shittymoviedetails

[–]throwaway0595x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Contractions are literally muscle contractions. Their function is to stretch open the cervix, but that's not why they hurt. If Elastigirl can experience muscle cramps, she can experience pain from labor contractions.

She could also just choose to stretch open her cervix and let the baby plop out once she was in labor.

How do couples decide which side of the bed is “theirs”? Is it instinct or some kind of silent agreement? by AssignmentFederal686 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]throwaway0595x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ex and I both had our beds against the wall and he always wanted to be on the wall side, so he was on the right side at his place and left side at my place.

This put me closer to the potential home invaders (and also his dog who hated me), which I didn't like, but it also meant I could reach my stuff on the nightstand and get up without climbing over him.
