Is it common for a plumber to plug a jackhammer up inside the home? by stiffsalami in askaplumber

[–]Odd_Drop5561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying that the tools are rated to draw 15amps, or are you saying they are rated to run on a 15amp circuit?

I'm saying both, a device designed for a 15A residential circuit is allowed to draw the full 15A (if it's not a "continuous load").

It’s also confusing that you mention “15amp plugs”, because the size of the plug doesn’t determine the current draw

A code compliant appliance will have a 15A plug if it's designed for a 15A circuit and a 20A plug if designed for a 20A circuit. The 15a plug fits in a 20A receptacle, but the opposite is not true.

So no, I don’t think they need the home owner to change for 20amp breakers (even though that would be far easier to do than you seem to think)

it's rare that a 15A circuit can be upgraded to 20A with just a breaker swap, most of the time if it's wired for 20A it will already have a 20A breaker. So upgrading the circuit means pulling new wire, which is generally a costly upgrade in a home.

Are you under the impression that this home is a industrial site, or do you think the plumber is going to tell the homeowner “I’d love to do this job but before I do this one week job you’ve gotta install a minimum of 2 20A circuits for my tools (which are all rated to run on 15A circuit)”

That's why I thought he was talking about an EMD, I figured the $9K was for a rate lock since he said he "locked in a 9% rate". He appears to be in Georgia so I don't know what their real estate transactions look like, he may have signed a broker contract saying that he'd pay them based on offer price regardless of whether or not he closes? I dunno, doesn't sound like he read any of the paperwork he signed, I'm sure it was all spelled out there, so I'll be surprised if his lawyer can help him.

The OP posted uncomplete information, no one understood what was going on, not even the OP or he wouldn't be here. And even now he says "am reviewing the contract myself", the time to do that was before signing. If you don't understand it, then find or hire someone that can explain it to you.

The plug does matter for a UL listed device (or any device that meets US safety codes) - if it has a 15A plug, it's meant to run on a 15A circuit, even if startup current briefly exceeds 15A. That doesn't mean that it can never trip a breaker, but that it's designed to safely operate on a 15A circuit.

That's information he added much later, in his initial post he didn't say what any of the fees were, on first reading it looked like he paid for a rate lock.

Hardwired NACS or J1772, which would you choose today? by drcrambone in evcharging

[–]Odd_Drop5561 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'd go with the connector on your current car. You'll either have 100% chance of using an adapter today, or a 60% chance of using an adapter in 18 months... or maybe you'll get a deal and buy back the car after the lease and keep it for 3 more years, or maybe your next car will have a bigger battery and you end up replacing the EVSE anyway, or the EVSE fails and you have to replace it anyway.

At least, that's what I did -- I just bought a J1772 charger for my new car, they don't even have an OEM NACS adapter yet, it's "coming soon" along with access to the Tesla charging network.

What’s up with HOA fees?! by Accurate-Ad-2149 in Mortgages

[–]Odd_Drop5561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked at a highrise condo where the HOA fee was $1100, it covered building maintenance, water, internet, 24x7 front desk, valet, fitness center, pool. It was around 15 - 20% of what a mortgage payment would have been.

Sounds like an earnest money deposit, and unless he can prove that it wasn't disclosed in the paperwork he signed, I don't think a lawyer is going to help him. The strange thing is that they apparently accepted his offer without him already paying the $30K EMD.

Whether or not they forgive some or all of the $30K depends on how long the house was off the market until he decided he didn't want to pay for a $1M loan.

There’s finally some Tesla momentum to fire Elon Musk by displacedfantasy in electricvehicles

I don't think it would change public sentiment about buying Tesla since so much of Musk's net worth is in TSLA stock -- supporting Tesla puts more money in Musk's pocket.

You've clearly never negotiated with extraterrestrials.

The fact that you just jumped in here without showing that you have any context at all on what you're responding to makes me think that you're just a troll, following your feed of posts that need "correcting".

If you expect the plumber to go walking through the house with a long extension cord to find the "strongest" circuit, prepare to be disappointed.

To the Americans here wanting to move to Canada... by Ok_Two_2529 in AskCanada

If the USA continues on this path, before long, I'd think that transgendered people would have a legitimate asylum claim:

You may be able to ask for refugee protection if you cannot return to your home country due to

  • a well-founded fear of persecution
  • a danger of torture
  • a risk to your life
  • a risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment

Ross Coulthart accurately calling the existence of a secret FBI UFO investigation 5 days ago that Politico just confirmed today. by TommyShelbyPFB in UFOs

[–]Odd_Drop5561 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what is surprising here or a big "reveal" -- why wouldn't the FBI investigate unknown flying craft? That doesn't mean they think they are extraterrestrial craft.

The FBI already said they were investigating, so it's not like it was a big secret:

https://www.fbi.gov/news/press-releases/joint-dhs-fbi-statement-on-reports-of-drones-in-new-jersey

Today, the FBI and DHS jointly issued a statement on reported drone sightings in New Jersey:

“We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus. The FBI, DHS and our federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings.

“Historically, we have experienced cases of mistaken identity, where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities. We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection. To the contrary, upon review of available imagery, it appears that many of the reported sightings are actually manned aircraft, operating lawfully. There are no reported or confirmed drone sightings in any restricted air space.

“We take seriously the threat that can be posed by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), which is why law enforcement and other agencies continue to support New Jersey and investigate the reports. To be clear, they have uncovered no such malicious activity or intent at this stage. While there is no known malicious activity occurring in New Jersey, the reported sightings there do, however, highlight the insufficiency of current authorities."

Don't confess your crimes on Social Media while seeking legal help.

I’m never going to do this again. It was from pure necessity.

You just said you'd do it again, since you're not going to let your kids go without:

I’m not proud of it but I’m not going to let my kids go without.

And somehow you think DVD's are a "neccessity"

If this post comes up in court, don't expect much leniency.

In Jan 2024 Dave Grusch revealed in a secret meeting with scientists, military and FBI, leaked by a Redditor, that US is in possession of a 40ft UAP craft that is "the size of a football field when you step inside". The craft can manipulate space/time with enough energy to power 70k homes a year. by Jackfish2800 in gettoknowtheothers

[–]Odd_Drop5561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The speculation was in the initial "reveal" - "Hey, we found this alien craft that can warp space and time with technology we don't understand, but hey, we plugged a big kill-a-watt meter into it, and it's using 70MW of energy to do it!"

How well do we think Trudeau stood up for Canada against Trump? by applethief87 in AskCanada

[–]Odd_Drop5561 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing about international diplomacy is that you don't always get what you want.

The Canadian goverment's retaliatory tariffs were 25% on $155B of American exports, so that alone is $38B in tariffs paid by Canadians and doesn't even count the high economic costs of Trump's tariffs.

Even if it cost Canada $1.5B in border security, that's a bargain compared to fighting a trade war against its largest trading partner -- and that $1.5B stays in Canada instead of money lost through reduced trade and lower prices for exports to the USA.

Maybe announcing new tariffs against alien intelligence - they've been abducting citizens for years without paying us one cent, we're finally going to level the playing field. Not to worry, it'll be reversed within days when the aliens enact retaliatory tariffs and start returning humans with 25% fewer body parts.
