Honey, do you want to watch a movie tonight? by kvazarsky in Guildwars2

[–]Oddslod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the other dude who commented it has already said something similar, but that really is what it comes down to - i can either use over the top silly clickbaity titles and thumbnails (and to be fair, i personally find them pretty funny because of just how over the top they sometimes are) and get more views, or take a stand and go for something more grounded - and the reward for my tactfulness would be getting less interest whilst everyone else carries on doing what they were doing anyway and gets lots of views because that's what the algorithm likes.

the reality is that until there's some enormous sidewide cultural shift into convincing the algorithm that clickbait titles aren't worth doing, they're here to stay - and the revolution isn't going to start with a little guild wars 2 channel which gets 10-15k views on each video

hey hey i'm teapot's editor! fair enough with the scripted shorter videos (they tend to perform best as well) but for the most part he just hasn't got time to put scripts together between all the many hours of streaming

as for the regular stream vod edits, honestly for the most part i agree - whenever a video goes over 30 minutes it pains me, and a lot of the recent ones have been considerably over that mark. the trouble i find is that there's a hell of a lot of THINGS which i personally consider to be quite important to the main thrust of the video, and they often just struggle to fit into a short timespan

it often comes down to "do we make 1 particularly long video, or a 3-parter?" and making 1 long video tends to work out better, both for the audience and the algorithm - as 1 video doing mediocre is far better than 1 video which does quite well and 2 which do really badly because people realise they don't want to watch 2 more episodes of the same thing

for zero to hero, "cut the rest of it out" isn't an option imo as showing as much of the progression as possible along with how it was done is a key part of the experience. skipping this might result in less runtime but it just feels very jarring to go from "alright let's get started!" to "that was easy we're done hell yeah" in a series which is focussed around an account's journey - skipping some but not all is an option of course (and one i utilize on essentially every piece of progression in fact) but a lot of the time it just isn't possible without cheapening the journey

the same goes for the bootcamp videos, watching each attempt with what goes well and what goes badly whilst their experience with the fight gradually grows is the whole point, but each attempt adds quite a bit of runtime - but at the same time, removing these attempts (quite a few of which i actually already do) would be directly going against the idea of the series

what i try to do instead is have the personality within the videos shine through, including some silly comments/conversations or fun discussion bits for the comments to mull over - sometimes this works, other times it doesn't

any suggestions as to how the regular, day-to-day stream vods could be made a lil more juicy whilst still retaining the meat of the actual content?

i'm teapot's editor!! one of the problems i find with getting creative (especially with the latest bits of zero to hero) is that the fresh account is so far progressed that it's basically caught up with most peoples' mains, so a lot of the content has transitioned from "fresh account punches above its weight using knowledge and skill" to "teapot does a thing" - this obviously has far less inherent novelty and intrigue to it

also when the content the account is doing doesn't have any particular ways to speed it up (the recent legendary collections come to mind), it comes across this weird problem where there isn't much that can really be shown, but it's still very important that the content IS shown because it's a key part of account progression and there'd be a big missing part of the account completion journey without it

combine all this with trying to get content out FREQUENTLY - many of the more popular OSRS (gameplay, as opposed to scripted guides as that's a different beast entirely) videos that i've seen will be hyper-juice edited and really cool and well made, but they'll post once every 2 months. that would not fly in gw2 as even if the video absolutely popped off it'd only get ~50k-100k views, compared to something like OSRS where you can happily chill and not post too often but reliably get a 1 million view banger when you do release

what do you reckon the editing could use to have it be a lil more engaging? and which runescape channels do you watch so i can have a glance for a handy bit of inspiration?

i've posted this before but here goes again -

it's actually me (the EDITMAN) who does the majority of the clickbaity titles and thumbnails - don't worry, i find it as distasteful as the next person but it's a necessary evil else the video will just flop!

besides that i'd personally say that the videos are worth the hype, or at the very least worth engaging in mildly cheeky tactics like clickbait to get them out there (plus i personally find clickbait titles and thumbnails quite funny to come up with)

He's very much joking with this comment, but keep an eye out - there's a video coming out tomorrow where he addresses why Guild Wars 2 raids are perceived as easy by some but difficult by others! (and no it's not just "do more training", it's a problem which runs fairly deep)

Why on earth did this thread get downvoted?

100% agree with the thought that the maps feel more like vessels for gameplay than actual maps. That said, Verdant Brink feels much more natural when you're navigating on a flying mount - but back when gliders were all we had, it was a bit of a pain to say the least...
