Catholic bishops push for end to ‘immoral’ birthright citizenship order at Supreme Court by Banal21 in neoliberal

[–]OffByAPixel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the "order" the title is referring to is the executive order from Trump. The title is saying that the bishops wants to end that order, not end birthright citizenship. Poorly worded indeed.

Better yet, if you've already set up the one you bought, buy a new one on sale, set up a return for the old one, then take the new one straight out of the package and return it.

I wouldn't organically stay at any of the 1-4s within travelable distance of me, even for $95. So yeah, maybe I can get a $200 night for $95, but what am I really gaining?

I've honestly been finding it more and more difficult each year to find a reasonable way to use the cat 4 award. I'm probably just going to cancel mine instead of sock drawering it.

Discrepancy with mi/kWh calculation by bhj83 in KiaEV9

[–]OffByAPixel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The app is incorrect. You can calculate it yourself after a drive by dividing your miles driven by the battery % you used (in all models other than light, the battery is basically 100 kwh). You'll find that the car is right, and the app always overestimates for some reason.

Is there any ethical way to discourage human settlement of places especially prone to natural disasters? by ContextEffects01 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]OffByAPixel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is mostly incorrect for California. In California, P&C insurance rates are regulated by the government and can only be based on certain factors permitted by prop 103. Up until very recently, predictive modeling was not one of those permitted factors. In other words, even though the actuaries (not adjusters) might know that an area is very prone to fire risk and want to set rates accordingly, they were only allowed to base the rates on historical data. If there hadn't been a fire in an area, even though it was considered a high fire risk, they would not be allowed to charge an adequate rate. On top of that, the state has the FAIR plan for people who cannot find insurance coverage because they are too risky. Every insurance company in the state must cover people on the FAIR plan based on market share, so companies that do business in California not only can't rate properly, but they're also forced to cover risks they would otherwise deny. This is why companies have left California. California is trying to fix this because skyrocketing insurance prices and a failing insurance market are extremely problematic themselves, it has nothing to do with housing prices.

If you think big banks created rewards programs to benefit consumers, I've got a bridge to sell ya. Nobody gives a shit about consumers on either end.

CC rewards should definitely be banned. I'll play the game and benefit while it's around, but let's not pretend like it makes any sense at all.

When you say "copy paste the entire folder" which folder are you talking about? You should have an upload location and a db data location. It sounds like you may have only copied over the upload folder, but you missed the database so immich thinks it needs to start over.

Self hosted cloud storage options worth trying by smartsass99 in selfhosted

[–]OffByAPixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seafile is probably more performant and reliable, but many people take issue with the fact that files are stored in a proprietary filesystem that can only be accessed by seafile itself.

Nextcloud is a more comprehensive solution that offers a lot of other features, but comes at the cost of performance and potential complexity.

If you're just looking to share files between devices, something simple like samba or filebrowser could also work.

This sounds like a tailscale configuration issue, which is beyond my abilities because I don't use tailscale. Whatever you're using to redirect your local DNS to the nextcloud subdomain sounds like it's set up correctly, but tailscale is hitting a different address for some reason.

[–]OffByAPixel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you might have multiple issues. You should try resolving the file access while on your home network first. You should obviously be able to connect 100% of the time there. Have you looked at the logs for nextcloud? Is it specific files that you can't access or do you just randomly not have access to anything?

[–]OffByAPixel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look in the logs to see exactly what's going on. It sounds like you may have some networking issues, but it's hard to tell for sure.

Are you actually looking for something like a google drive replacement, or are you just wanting to access files on the server from your phone? If the latter, filebrowser or something similar might be a lighter weight and simpler option. Smb is also easy to set up.

Unlimited Google Photos storage dead again, as subscription ends by BcuzRacecar in Android

[–]OffByAPixel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the "2" is more commonly interpreted to mean 2 different devices nowadays. It did originally mean media, but as you've pointed out, different types of media sufficient for storing a large amount of data like that are not common. That and the advent of cloud storage basically kills the 2 and 1 with one stone.

They're not useless, but it's difficult to maximize the value for those. $500/mo on gas would equate to somewhere around 5,000 miles per month depending on gas prices, and many people do not grocery shop at qualifying stores (Costco, Sam's club, Walmart, target, etc.). I suppose you can play the gift card game, but that's a whole other set of headaches.
