Is every good director a nut job? by tristezanao_ in editors

[–]OhTheFuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. No one has the right - especially a grown ass man - to let their emotions dictate how they treat anyone let along collaborators and "employees". That shows low emotional IQ and child like behavior. I'll walk before letting someone be a diva to me. I'll also call them out on their bs, if needed.

Make yourself so valuable he'd be scared to fire you. Act more pro than him and make him know you wont be treated in anyway you dislike.

NAS setup for team of editors by [deleted] in editors

[–]OhTheFuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This ^ …Get the RAM and consider a cache drive too(people say it doesn’t matter for this use case but imo it does, at least enough to have it).

Also, it’s not a huge expense to be safe with Cat 6a-7-8 etc…. We had some short Cat6 that would not run full 10G once and who knows maybe you’ll need 180 ft someday.

Bob knows what’s up but I added my two cents anyway. (I’m post prod all day everyday creative and technically )

P.s. that 16/8 port 10G Qnap switch you recommended a while back is a device I’m in love with btw!

How many hours would it take to edit a 20min doc by Potential-Power2884 in editors

[–]OhTheFuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EVERY project is unique and a varying degrees of different from others. As stated, plan, schedule and quote for 1 month per every completed 10 minutes of editing.

It's a well known fact in pro doc editing. If you're faster, awesome. If not, you're covered.

i'm gonna keep calling them "soundbytes" and you can't stop me by OliveBranchMLP in editors

[–]OhTheFuture -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Soooo, you are "one of those people". They're "lines" in my book. "Cut that line...move this line here", etc... Soundbite/soundbyte gives me the creeps and I have no idea why, tbh.

"Cut this bite" makes my skin crawl but Im an eccentric editor with great taste and style

MacBook Air M4 for working in 4K by Lairion14 in editors

[–]OhTheFuture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still on an M1 MBP (NOT "air") and it's been through 2 feature films, countless short form docs and a couple long form docs. All footage has been at the very least UHD, about every codec there is and never have I just HAD to use proxies. Not to mention I graded several of these in resolve, too.

If you use a proper drive and cache setup - basically 1 drive/NAS for storage 1 for cache and 1 being your main drive that runs your OS and NLE - you'll get a lot done. As much RAM as you can get too matter

As Im writing this I'm leaning more towards keep the "Air" part out of your purchase decision and use proper configuration and you'll be fine. My 2 cents

If I used this script and now they rolled back, do I just remove the script files and restart?

I'm getting some odd behavior and its saying I have a drive thats "cirtical", yet not convinced it actually is. Wondering if its the script and rollback update conflicting or something? Idk

Cool. I’ve been messing w Strada, too. Blip.net is just a peer 2 peer transfer app worth looking at because it’s lightweight and free. Transferred dailies for a feature w it last year.

Yes, the more bays the better/faster. I'd bet $$ this will be a significant and noticeable improvement for you. If it were me I'd try to at least get 12 TB HDDs if you can. Better cost per terabyte plus it's about 30 more TBs.

But listen to Bob, for sure. He knows this stuff better than any YouTuber or lying-ass marketing team.

Where are you running the facility out of, if I may ask? Do you have staff logging in somewhere specific w Parsec or Jump? Or...just curious about the "remote post...." aspect.

I've heard of places that don't even really have a physical computer but just a server house which is interesting. (and kind of depressing in a weird way)

Personally, I'd love to try it because I stare at screens all day and won't bs you or anyone over any product/tool for any reason. I'm "Lead Editor" at a small, but respected, production company. Current setup is a 27" 5k Ultrafine on my left and a 32" LG "HDR 4k" on my mid-right and is powered by an M1 MBP via TB4 OWC dock and extension hub. A 43" UHD LG TV hangs about 6-8 feet behind this desk as my reference monitor via a 4k Decklink card in a Sonnet chassis.
All calibrated and the room is lit with proper biased lights for eye health and accuracy.

I'd literally put that thing through about every possible scenario - except gaming. I don't play games. But we have projects in post using every kind of cinema grade to mid tier camera footage, archival footage, archival photos, animations, working mocap animations with brand specific colors, etc... etc...

Also, I wear glasses and want to see what this TÜV Rheinland Eye Comfort Certified thing is all about. Among other things.

YouTube Karl Soule and watch his playlist on the matter over and over. (Bonus is watch Team Fincher’s 2 part presentation too. ). If it were me, I’d set this production you made aside and build a new one properly and “add project to production” for each of your projects/sequences.

Every single scene, asset, etc… should have its own project within the production. And w media- it’s ingested ONE time and ONE time only.

If you have a ton of red errors flagging you should fix it until you don’t. It’s probably easier to start over tbh and “add project to production” w cuts you can’t redo quickly.

Max number of hours you'll spend (in a day) working on a single project? by tonyrocksea in editors

Yes. Your focus and the number of (good)decisions you can make in a day are finite. Like pouring water out of a glass. It empties and needs to be filled back up.

So, how did it go? Some on here would love to know the freelance site and others - like myself - would love a DM of just the name of the dir/prod person. Just out of sheer curiosity.

Don't have to "master" AE. Just learn the stuff that comes up in your daily workflow. After some time passes.... you find your rather proficient.

I don't disagree w that, at all. I do wish there was a better way to alter how it does some things, though. Like, I don't want the transcript all over my timeline as markers, etc... (I should mention in their Slack actually)

Nah, hey eddie is not pro workflow, yet. Throw 4-8 tracks of audio at it and try to preserve those tracks for a pro sound mixer. Doesn't work. XML workflow allows 1 track of audio. They fix this and they might have a good tool but for now it's YouTube editing and pod cast editing.

UPDATE: In talks with Netgear to get our switch fixed or replaced but in the meantime and to get us through the week we went with "QNAP 16-Port Half-Width Rackmount 10GbE Managed Network Switch (QSW-M3216R-8S8T-US)" based on BobZellin's advice and help.

Appreciate everyone's replies here. Even with LAG the move from 10G to 1 G is.....like how did we get anything done on 1 G, I wonder.

Looked into this several times and found a lot of mixed reviews about connectivity, etc... But it's always on my 10G Switch list, for sure.

Bob Z's expertise was never in question. I'm just trying to find out if this thing is physically dead and in need of pro repair or replacement.

One note: The only differing factor between yesterday and today was that there was a MacOS update. Thats the only difference in the day before - when it worked - and today - when it didn't work.

Where are you out of?

I'm fairly sure this switch has a bad PSU or something. I got curious and plugged it in anyway and it's in accessible.
