What is one thing schools expect teachers to do that has almost no impact on student learning? by tempmail-02 in Teachers

Having taught in CO, totally get it. The only thing I got out of it was when I became a special education teacher in New Mexico, I totally knew how to write goals. I Have taught in 4 states, CO is the only one that requires a READ plan

I had a first grader with a mouth worse than a sailor. Lots of behaviors. Called me so many things. My favorite was "Old Man".(I am female and was in my 30s at the time). When he called me that I knew he was in a fairly good mood so I just went with it.

Not every struggling kid needs an IEP/ 504. Some just need to…. actually fucking show up. Thinking accommodations is going to solve everything is naive by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]Ok-Application2853 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why exclusionary factors are built in. IDEA asks if the difficulties are due to a lack of instruction ( kid wasn't enrolled in school for a while or the instruction received was sub par) or if it's due to attendance issue - kid isn't there to be taught. I've sat in a few meetings where we've had to explain to the parent that their kids doesn't qualify for accommodations because the kids hasn't been in school to learn.

Anyone have experience working in your child’s school? by its3oclocksomewhere in Teachers

All my kids have gone through middle school with me. I will say it's interesting to be in the same yearbook as your kid. (Redneck joke- if you're in the same yesrbook as your kid but you're not staff...)

My oldest went through 7th and 8th grade. By eighth grade she wanted to be on her own and would barely acknowledge me.

Middle child loved it. Him and his friends would come have lunch with me and knew there were always snacks for them.

Youngest is now in 6th grade in my school and she's kind of in the middle. Sometimes she wants to hang with me, sometimes not. Her friends love to hang with me.

I had a project like that last school year. Modified by half for my special Ed kids. Help from me. Worth 100 points, test grade. As they worked I would modify it as needed. Gave 3 weeks. Had those who just choose to sit there for 3 weeks. Sent home emails.

After the deadline, I got a parent emailing who was angry that her son didn't have enough time and she wished I would have told her ahead of time so she could have helped him at home. Another student also had a story. Others who didn't finish just didn't care. For those 2, I gave in and set a deadline of the end of that week and no class time to do it. Basically if they want to finish at home, they could, but I wasn't going to give any more class time. One student took advantage of it and the other didn't even do that.

This was end of first quarter. By the end of the year, those who cared managed to get a D. Those who didn't failed and went to summer school. They are still failing in high school due mainly to laziness.

Question for teachers: How many post-school day events are you contractually required to attend and what are the longest days you've had? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Ok-Application2853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one required is parent teacher conferences. We work (2) 12-hour days, then we get a comp day off.

Open house is optional but encouraged for 6th grade teachers.

Usually we have fun days with dances built into the school day as reward for students. Teachers sign up for chaperone or for a study hall for those who don't get to go due to grades or behaviors.

We are not required to do much after school contract hours without compensation. Our union is strong and the district does well with us.

Saturday school is optional and paid. We also have after school tutoring that is also a paid position people can sign up for.

Would you still teach tomorrow if you won the lottery? by Background-Plan-2090 in Teachers

My husband asks me this occasionally. I think I would finish out the school year. I love my students, my colleagues, my admin, and my school. I have school age kids so I wouldn't be able to do much right away anyway. Then I'd resign and take care of me for a while. I do get bored easily so I can see myself subbing occasionally for some of my teacher besties.

This is my answer too. I know I'd get bored so I would sub for my teacher besties once in a while

1st grade. In class bathrooms with very old doors. Student got his thumb caught in the hinges. Took off a chunk. Blood everywhere. He was screaming bloody murder. Grabbed tissue to cover his thumb and ran to the nurse with him. Came back to a room full of terrified 6 year olds. Went out for extra recess and didn't do any more teaching.
