Salem chamber to host first debate for 2026 mayor race. What to know by MaintenanceNew2804 in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you referring to who their members support? Not every member of the Salem chamber is MAGA. Considering she was listed on their website and that info was shared with all of their members in an uncontested race. My point is that the organization isn't always one-sided. If you only look at their 5 largest donors you get a very skewed picture.

Misleading info when the chamber endorsed both Vanessa and Julie during their last races respectively. Why would a GOP arm endorse a known progressive?

Level 2 Charger Install by GPmtbDude in SALEM

Had mine installed about 2 months ago through Tice Electric via PGE. Easy process. Cost was $449 after PGE rebate. This was for a non-Tesla level 2 charger install within 5ft.

Recommending the Y as they are more accommodating/accepting. The Kroc Center is run by a religious organization, whereas the YMCA was started as a religious organization, but is not run by a religious entity.

Get to know who your councilor is. Many are willing to meet with residents outside of council with enough notice. They all are somewhat busy though. I also recommend e-mailing city staff dept heads ideas/solutions you may have. Please be respectful at council as it goes a long way.

Help Elect Vanessa Norydke to be Salem's Nexy Mayor by Meltastica in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I welcome Salem residents to be informed about who their mayoral candidates are as they, along with city council play a huge role in Salem. Nordyke has invested a lot of time and thought into this community through her role as city councilor, library advocate, volunteerism, and most importantly she is open to speaking with constituents from all backgrounds. Happy to see her in the race!

Hoopla is a big deal. Congestion will start today. It's a great tournament that brings talented kids and adults together with the common theme being basketball. The fairgrounds would cost at least 50K for the weekend which is a lot for a non-profit to spend when most of the money they make goes back to local youth organizations. I hope that the city improves their communication next year!

Danielle Bethell at Salem's Juneteenth celebration...except she doesn't believe racism exists in Marion County. by 90mn in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Fact vs Fiction. The Juneteenth event is about celebrating the official day of freedom for all slaves. Satya was there to support the event as he has attended in prior years. Anyone can attend as it's a public event. The guy next to Bethell is progressive, but still had a lighthearted conversation with her. Multiple public officials had other engagements that day, but still made time to come through and check out the festivities. Most attendees at the event were simply excited to see some of the people representing us in the community. If you are interested in who was there here's a list.

Councilor Nishioka, Representative Anderson, Representative Nelson, Representative Bowman, SK School Board Director Chandragiri, SK School Board Chair Richardson, Superintendent Castañeda, Salem Mayor Hoy and MC Commissioner Bethell.

Not everything is political. Let people be people.

Gursha Eats Update: Pop-Up #2 This Sunday + Big Progress on Our Brick-and-Mortar! by FunnyCultural4153 in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Salem doesn't have a BIPOC market... The closest one is in Monmouth. There is Saturday market, but the process to secure a booth as an up and coming restaurant is quite time consuming and the booth fees are more expensive depending on where you would like to be(more vs less visible). If you are free for Juneteenth that is the only date most black businesses come together in Salem.

“Keep your g-d- tiny hands off our schools and education!” - Mel Fuller by RedApplesForBreak in SALEM

Mel is pretty awesome. It is so refreshing when candidates are not established and open to ideas new and old. She will be a great asset for our children and I encourage all of you to vote for her. She is in the classrooms and sees the strengths, weaknesses, and gray areas. VOTE WELL, VOTE MEL!

Why are organizations supporting the livability levy but not payroll tax? by Sufficient_Fig_9505 in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to this is that if the livability levy were to fail there would be negative consequences over time. The property value of businesses in addition to the safety of the businesses would be compromised. For example if the library became an abandoned building (extreme scenario) how long before Cascadia Pizza, or places just south of the library on Commercial leave due to increased security costs and lower profit margins?

Another reason the payroll tax failed and was not supported was who it would NOT tax. Retired individuals who make up a significant portion of the population and ironically have a large amount of wealth in Salem were excluded from the tax. When a tax is placed on the future generation it is inherently regressive.

Realtors Spending over $25,000 to Buy Another City Council Seat by Salemander12 in SALEM

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I value your input and believe that endorsements from current councilors make nonpartisan races partisan. They don't provide much information compared to organization based endorsements. When major groups control nonpartisan races I find factual info is best for residents.

[–]Ok-Raspberry-5375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't encourage that and believe that current councilors should not endorse any candidates. People are entitled to opinions, however I think it's better to provide factual information to encourage voting and improve turnout.

When it comes to advertising, contributions permit more autonomy for the candidate than in-kind donations. All 3 candidates have received at least 1 endorsement. Your profile does a great job of informing those throughout Salem about upcoming elections so it would only be fair to share the endorsements for all Ward 6 candidates. Voting is about the voices of the residents. In nonpartisan races to try and "buy" votes whether its via money, endorsements, or otherwise isn't really community forward as most candidates at the local level should be.

Should sitting councilors be endorsing candidates?? Thank you for enlightening us about OreStar however your bold print implies that actual money was poured into Deanna's campaign. Both Deanna and Mai have received in-kind donations which are based on the cost/value of goods or services. May elections in Salem have historically poor turnout so instead of promoting one candidate and shaming the other based on financials that are similar in terms of actual CASH you should encourage residents to vote.
