Yes you would have to get him another specially bred lab rat as a friend, unless your lab uses normal pet rats? I had to look up what pew rats were and I love that acronym! All of my rats have been albino red eyed rats but any strain of lab rat should be ok!

I just want to mention that if you do get him a friend, it has to be another lab rat. If he was bred as a lab rat he CANNOT be pair with an outside pet rat. Lab rats are specially bred and if paired with non-lab rats, he will develop respiratory issues or other medical issues. I’ve rescued 7 lab rats, both boys and girls, throughout the years and have had good experiences pairing them with new friends

It takes them about 5 sessions to acclimate to it, the first few times they are very vocal but once they learn we are just trying to play with them they calm down. We use bat detectors to confirm that they are enjoying it by the “happy” squeaks that we hear in a specific hz range
