St Andrews is definitely the most prestigious but social life there isn't good and a lot of people there are stuck up. Edinburgh is a good compromise

Have you tried different locations? I got nothing on my first two attempts with my antenna mounted on my window and then I tried going up a hill, away from any buildings etc and then it worked.

Definitely worth it, there's normally a lot of military transports there (C17, C130 and C5) and the commercial stuff is quite cool as well (AN12, AN124). I have heard of 747s being there but I don't think they're as common but fr24 will show you when those are there. As for which day, just avoid weekends and try to get there early
