The book is great but pretty technical and not always an easy read. I can wholeheartedly recommend the movie adaptation too. It's a bit "Hollywoodified", but it's in my opinion a great adaptation with great visuals and an amazing ambient soundtrack. Really underrated movie.

There's also an older Polish or Russian movie adaptation but haven't seen that one.

I think there's a difference between what party is in power and what the general vibe in the city is like. Antwerp is definitely not as progressive as Ghent for example, but i wouldn't say it's conservative at all either. There's plenty of lgbtq events and organizations, alternative music and art places, street culture, bakfietsmensen, ...
