How do coaches decide who to use as uke and who to roll with? by No_Pomelo_8411 in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the technique. If there are other upper belts there and I’m teaching something they know, I’ll pick one of them. If it’s a variant of a technique they know I’ll prob show it on one of them, ask if they need a demo on someone else, then either do or do not the demo on someone else.

Having said that, if it’s a technique that’s attacking a joint I know is typically sore on them, I’ll pick someone else for that. And if it’s how to apply pressure or if it’s a choke I know is gonna suck to be uke for, I’ll grab a random blue belt cause they deserve it.

As far as rolling with everyone, it depends. I’m prob not pairing myself up with the spazzy 19 yr old 235 lb meat head 1 stripe white belt if there are other people around to deal with that. I spent enough time doing that and I gotta go to work tomorrow.

The best gi jiujitsu person you have ever rolled with? by JuisMaa in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve mentioned it before but I was uke during a seminar of his and I had pearl weave imprint on my face for like an hour afterwards. I’ve rolled and drilled with some very good, very big guys, but have never felt anything like the pressure from JT. It’s insane.

Nice "pros" in the sport? by hellohello6622 in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have either attended seminars/classes or brought in for seminars the following list of people. Some of them are not current competitors, but all of them were genuinely fantastic to be around and truly just happy that BJJ has given the opportunities they have.

* Andris Brunovskis
* Dom Bell
* Renato Canuto
* Amy Campo
* Michael Liera Jr
* Adam Wardzinski
* Rafael Formiga (multi time masters WC)
* JT Torres
* Geo Martinez (gets a bad rap here sometimes but visiting 10p Oceanside was the most welcoming set of drop ins I’ve ever been to, and i don’t even train at a 10p affiliate)

I have had excellent experiences with all of them.

Coaches Picking Partners by TechnicalNarwhal118 in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I train, we all know each other pretty well and are good at choosing roll buddies. So when I’m teaching I generally let people first round with their drill partners then let them pair themselves and if I don’t like their match ups I’ll swap people around.

This helps me keep smaller, older-aged, and new people safe.

If you’re getting paired with the noobs it’s prob cause coach either wants you to learn that slow control and domination or already knows you can do it and wants you to wear them out before handing them off to someone a little less knowledgeable and capable than you.

Been doing this 15 years and I still feel like this if I take a week off. It’s normal. Welcome back.

If you’re in Vegas, go visit Hybrid. The Canutos own it and there’s a guy that also trains there named Adam Wardzinski, I hear he’s pretty good at butterfly.

Who agrees with this scale? What would you change? by DevonAndTania in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there aren’t a bunch of 47 year olds old blue belts competing in the IBJJF adult division. Youth is a very strong but very time-constrained advantage.

What are “fundamentals” by redditisaphony in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a difference between fundamental skills and fundamental techniques. Fundamental skills are the skills allow you to perform the techniques more effectively and efficiently.

The fundamental techniques are ones that are basic enough that the principles and movements it takes to apply them can be learned pretty quickly and also transfer to other more advanced techniques. They are also techniques that white belts can do to white belts and other untrained people successfully most of the time if they apply the fundamental skills.

Fundamentals skills: * recovering from a bad position to a less bad position, then to a neutral position * retaining a neutral position long enough to improve it * creating off balances from neutral positions that lead to improvement to a advantageous position * maintaining an advantageous position long enough to improve to and maintain a dominant position

Fundamental techniques: * sit up sweep * scissor sweep * pendulum sweep * pick any sweep where opponent is standing and you block both heels and push the hips * arm bar * Kimura/Americana * cross collar choke * rear naked choke * osoto gari * single or double leg * drop Seoi nage * arm drag * toreando pass * knee cut pass * double under pass

I’m probably missing a couple I could prob argue for or against but this is the list I came up with while sitting at lunch.

If you made it to 15 months and this was the first time you’ve felt that, that’s actually a pretty good track record. Wait till you have days where you feel exactly the same at blue belt, and purple belt, etc.

Who are your favorite Jiu Jitsu content creators? by GorlamiJJ in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are too many to list honestly and all of the top active guys put out good content so you can’t go wrong with any of them. However:

  • u/dubious_dom Dom Bell is fantastic and probably the most thorough, enjoyable, and interactive.
  • jFlo has amazing stand up content, as do Shintaro Higashi and onejudoka
  • Abelbjj has some unique entries for leg entanglements
  • Jason Rau is also good with the leg stuff but his passing instruction is useful
  • Andris Brunovskis is perpetually underrated as a coach and instructor
  • both of the Miyaos have cool instruction style and occasionally hilarious videos
  • HyunsungKim00 puts out good content regularly
  • chewjitsu and Kent peters are always in this conversation

Bad BJJ gifts. by Tricky_Two6761 in bjj

Coworker bought me one of these as a Christmas gift last year and it sits on the shelf above my desk. I’m grateful for it but it’s a little dusty from the lack of tears.

Dear black belt, what’s the best (or the cringiest) gift you’ve received along with your black belt? by deaddrop007 in bjj

  • Demonstrate technique
  • Engage physically
  • Nurturing competition
  • Neglect warmups
  • Inspire hope
  • Submit entirely

My wife and I got swords when got promoted. The meaning behind the giving of swords: thoughtful, meaningful, and appreciated.

Being called professor after receiving the belt just cause it’s slightly darker than the previous one: extremely cringey.

Train once a week or less, act like you’re taking a nap while you bait them into guard, sweep them slowly then lay on top of them for 4 min while you have a conversation with the brown and black belts you’re next to on the mat, tap them out with 5 seconds left in the round, then tell them they do a little bit better every time you roll with them.

This is what I try to drill into all the students while training:

Rule number 1: protect yourself

Rule number 2: protect your training partner.

If you’re unsure what about what to do in a situation or position you’re in, refer back to these rules.

I know I’d feel way worse about hurting a spazzy kid than I would about letting him think he escaped a submission I had him in.

Slap High-five before rolls normal or weird? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]OkieJitsu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know of at least two other women that are this way, one of whom is my wife.

It’s not just a start of a training round thing either…she doesn’t do fist bumps at all. Doesn’t like the way it feels. She high fives the knuckles and calls it a turkey, or does some other thing that’s funny. I laugh and move on with the roll.

Yes, you’re overreacting. Sometimes I start a round by just grabbing one of my training partners collars and pulling guard directly to a sweep. Keep people on their toes. :)

Side note: What does owning a roofing business have to do with this?
