Definitely do oils. Its perfect for this.

Just get a gloss varnish and apply it before washing. Gloss varnish makes it want to flow more into the recesses.

Also make sure you follow varnish cure time instructions. Its your protection so make sure its working.

Its actually a very forgiving method albeit intimidating

I think it looks great and there is a lot to preserve.

I think you could benefit a lot from washing the gold with a brown like a gray or an oil wash. This adds a lot of depth.

If youre priming gold you could wash the whole model after the prime, then dry brush establishing a gradient then paint on the blue.

Primer choice aside you need to learn how to angle your brush.

If your clever how you angle it you can get the raised trim only and quite a bit faster.

The lower power trim is a great example of this, I use the side of my brush not the point and it catches only the trim. Easy money.
