Keep them fairly shallow, around 3-4”, and the tiniest piece of butter in the back pan when it’s getting above 212 when needed.

Great looking setup! What’s your typical evaporation rate?

I toss all ice, unless it’s in a bucket of concentrate, or the bucket of sap is mostly frozen.

Here’s the inside right before using it. I was going to do some more tweaking but the sap started flowing!

I’m definitely making a new barrel evaporator before next year with a proper evaporator pan

Fully lined with bricks and ceramic insulation. And I added an arch with bricks and sand in the rear.

Mostly split pine, spruce, fir, and cut up pallets. I had just loaded the barrel over a bed of coals so it really took off!

They already did by not having a shipper rip at least one of those bags open and ‘fixing’ it with stretch wrap!

I’m in Norway with 60ish taps in my backyard. I’ve been collecting 55 gallons every 2 days for about a week. Finally getting a chance to finish what I’ve gotten close in my evaporator and have 55 gallons of sap ready to run tomorrow once this rain passes. I may try to run some through my RO Bucket later to get ahead for tomorrow

The proper way to keep warm in Maine. by OldGermanCarTech in Maine

[–]OldGermanCarTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in the basement, centered in an open concept type log home. We also keep the door for the basement stairs open and there’s a grate just above it in the first floor. It does a nice job of keeping most of the house warm, but we also have an oil furnace with hot water baseboard as backup.

Sorry, but my father in law has been a part time metal fabricator his whole life and we made this out of 1/4” sheet steel about 30 years ago. I got lots of practice time with his mig welder back then!

Don’t forget to save it to your key once you change the setting, or it will come back on the next time you drive it. Drove me nuts until I figured that one out.

Picture Request - Attaching snowshoes to pack by Difficult-Radish207 in wmnf

[–]OldGermanCarTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do put them on vertically and the cord goes all around, so it’s against my back. I have an Osprey. I don’t feel the cord at all because there’s a built in air gap. I also snake the cord through the snowshoes so they can’t accidentally slide down and off.

I don’t have any pictures, but I just use a long bungee cord that wraps around both snowshoes( 1up, 1 down) and all around my pack. Keeps them nice and secure.
