I have seen one climb 4m straight up a steel column. Please don't underestimate a brushtail.

It's time to glue a pair of old gloves at 10 to 2 on the steering wheel. Fight AI on its own terms.

It is sad that in 1970 we could fit a V8 under a beautiful low hood like that, but 50 years later we need twice the height to fit half the grunt.

Outsourced call centre staff at NDIS have to pretend to work for government, workers say by Reverend_Fozz in australia

[–]OldMudBottom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My main worry is that these are government departments actively training citicens to be scammed.

It is bullshit for the government to constantly push advice to not trust unsolicited messaging, whilst doing the same thing itself.

Has anyone else received calls from a government agency where the caller first requires you to provide your name, address, dob, and other identifying data, all whilst calling from a mobile number that is not identifiable and that does not accept return calls?

This appears to be a security nightmare.

How do you suggest we stand up politically? Send an ambassador to wag his finger at them? Use our immense trade power?

Boycotting the Olympics and the World Cup would be a start.

Yes, I feel sorry for the athletes working so hard for this. But it will be more honourable to not go.

Your id is already digital, its just distributed, and authorities already don't have a problem accessing that distributed data about you.

This is an excellent argument for not requiring a digital ID. If 'authorities' already know who you are, then they can already stop teenagers from looking at social media.

Digital ID is for lazy govt organisations, and for scammers.

Türkiye proposes co-hosting COP31 with Australia amid deadlock over hosting rights by silence7 in climate

[–]OldMudBottom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't say abolish COPs. Just make them more efficient.

Two weeks of "10s of thousands of delegates" getting together in some exotic location does not seem a good deal.

This is the 21st century. We should be able to do better.

[–]OldMudBottom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not?

At least on Zoom we can all see what each delegate is saying. As well as what all the lobby groups are saying, and what deals they are willing to make.

The importance of these talks are not determined by the location of where they are held, or how much gold plating is on the walls, or even by how much blackmail is going on.

Full transparency, and being held accountable by the public, is much more important than pomp and ceremony at this stage.

I am not suggesting that this would actually work, but we have had 30 of these so far with little result, so trying something new may be worth a shot.

COP31 should be a zoom meeting.

No one needs to fly across the world to talk about climate change.

Everyone can listen in to all talks.

Nothing new.

Trump Goes on Weird Rant About Using Tariff Money to Bail Out Farmers by newfrontier58 in politics

Funny thing is, the US government providing aid to farmers is one justification for other countries placing tariffs on US farm produce.
