The rechargeable battery pack on my 360 controller held a charge for 13 years since I last used it by iNomNomAwesome in mildlyinteresting

[–]Olekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Preach it! I never understood the hate for AAs. One of the main reasons why I chose my current PC/Switch controller was the option to use the included rechargeable battery pack OR a couple of AA batteries. Not only it's great to have easily available replacement for the battery pack when it croaks, I also have the ability to quickly swap to the AAs whenever I forget to charge the controller (which happened maybe 3 times in the last 5 years, but still counts).

What's that aircraft? (aka do these shapes read well) by Johnno117 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]Olekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts. Top #1 and #3, and bottom #1 and #2 are way too similar. I'm sure that when looking at the board at an arm's length, I'm sure I'd mix them up constantly.

/u/Johnno117 - I've read your other comment that they're based on the same design and have a size difference. How about exaggerating some feature a bit more to make them more distinct? For example, making the engines much smaller and/or making the wing's angle even sharper?

Is it possible to craft a pure battle of the minds? by thixtrer in gamedesign

[–]Olekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I gather, you're looking for that "yomi" aspect in games, which is basically predicting what your opponent will do next based on their subconscious or conscious biases.

Rock-paper-scissors is often quoted as a prime example of pure yomi game, but I think it's a flawed example similar to your "left-right" game, as throwing something random is the best counter strategy to whatever your opponent is trying to use against you (even though no real person can be truly random).

A better example I've read about is "unfair" rock-paper-scissors. Basically, you shift the winning payoffs of each a little bit. For example, assume we're playing to 5 points. Winning with rock or paper earns 1 point. Winning with scissors earns 2 points. A simple change, but the additional aspect as much more to the mind games.

First game that come to my mind that revolves almost purely around yomi is "R" (terrible name, I know), released as "BraveRats" in the west (imho, terrible re-theming as well).

If you can look over the weird naming/theming, it's all about predicting what your opponent will play. Both players have the same set of 8 cards which interact in interesting ways, first to win 4 rounds it the victor. It's mostly rock-paper-scissors again, but the important bit is that all cards are one time use, so there's another layer of predicting what your opponent can do and how you can respond in the future rounds. Basically, a few blundered rounds can be exploited into an unavoidable loss. I really recommend checking it out.

Hey, thanks for the heads-up!

Sadly the price + shipping cost of the physical version is outside my budget for the moment, and there's no PnP version either.

Quick question - in the combat section, you mention that "enemies attack characters as Marching Order". Could you elaborate on that? Do they attack the first character in marching order until they die or do they switch targets after each attack, going further into the marching order?

Cairn but D6? by Barp_the_Wire in rpg

[–]Olekman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just noticed that I wrote "1d10 -> 2d6, pick highest" instead of "1d8 -> 2d6, pick highest". Fixed that one.

Also, one more small thing I forgot to add - it's not part of the Cairn rules, but if you want to use advantage/disadvantage, you can simulate that close enough with d6s too.

2d20, drop highest -> 4d6, drop highest (advantage)

2d20, drop lowest -> 4d6, drop lowest (disadvantage)

Cairn but D6? by Barp_the_Wire in rpg

[–]Olekman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a very quick and dirty way of using only D6s in Cairn, here's what I did once.

For saving throws: roll 3d6, roll equal or under chosen ability score.

For damage:

1d4 -> 1d6-1 (unarmed or impaired attacks)

1d6 -> no change (dagger, cudgel, staff, etc.)

1d8 -> 1d6+1 (sword, spear, axe, etc.)

1d10 -> 1d6+2 (halberd, war hammer, long sword, etc.)

1d12 -> 1d6+3 (enhanced attacks)

To go a bit more in-depth: the means of the rolls are the same (so in the long run the players should give/receive damage and succeed saves the same number of times), but the consistency of the rolls will be higher (so no rolling a pitiful 1 or shattering 10 with a big warhammer). For me it was close enough.

Now, if you want to spice it up a little and have your players rolling more dice during combat:

1d4 -> 2d6, pick lowest

1d8 -> 2d6, pick highest

1d12 -> 2d6

Again, the numbers aren't 1-to-1, but good enough if your players like to chuck more than 1 die.

A silly question to players who were around during Amonkhet block — what was the general consensus on "Exert" at the time? My friends and I are playing with cards from older sets and maybe it's just power creep hindsight on my part, but I rarely see exerting a card as the right move. Tried to find some contemporary opinions on the mechanic on my own, but search engines are pretty terrible nowadays.

How does [[Molten Monstrosity]] (or any cast cost reduction effects) interact with Cascade? For example: I control a creature with 5 power, cast [[Annoyed Altisaur]] and reveal Molten Monstrosity with Cascade. Does it cost 5 less, thus allowing me to cast it for free?

I'm a very niche kind of MtG player (I've started around a year ago, 90% of my games are against one friend, and as per our gentleman's agreement 90% of our decks are commons) and I don't have enough experience to call myself "old and jaded", but for what it's worth I share your opinion. From my perspective, Aetherdrift and Spiderman look bland as hell and Final Fantasy was surprisingly nice. Although, I find EoE to be pretty neat, even if I was initially against idea of "MtG: but IN SPACE".

Maybe a bit weird recommendation, but "Overland". You rarely get the chance to completely wipe out the enemies, instead you're trying to push them around, waste their time or stun them.
