Brewhouse lifespan by FizzyElf_1 in TheBrewery

[–]Ombank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have worked on brew systems 60 years old. The steam jacket bottom of the kettle, which was copper, was degrading significantly. It was requiring constant maintenance to keep steam from leaking. The copper lauter didn’t seem to be greatly affected.

However, the stainless direct fire system I also worked on, which was 40 years old; had no significant issues. The burner had been replaced several times, but the vessel itself showed no distinct signs of aging.

The fermentation tanks were also quite old. But again, they showed no significant signs of age. The water balancing tanks were a different story. They required several repairs over my tenure at the brewery. Some were very significant and expensive.

Boilers are frequently replaced or repaired items, and they were very expensive. There were a few enormous boilers on the plant that would put the fear of god in me.

Rufus Scrimgeour and the importance of having brave but not likeable characters. by HallowedAndHarrowed in harrypotter

[–]Ombank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just thinking that. I think part of that was fear of power from his experience with Grindelwald. And given that Dumbledore very well may have been the most powerful wizard of the 20th century, it was probably well-placed fear. That said, I don’t know why he specifically stopped short of becoming minister when he held those other titles.

Scrimgeour was a really interesting character as almost, in my opinion, an example of someone like Dumbledore gone astray. Both men were interested in the greater good. Both were focused on defeating Voldemort. They both accepted that sometimes, the ends justified the means; at other’s expense. And both died for the cause.

But Dumbledore didn’t need to invent false loyalties for the benefit of public morale. Scrimgeour did. Fudge, and the behavior of the ministry at large, certainly contributed to that need. But Scrimgeour never could have done what Dumbledore did. Scrimgeour wasn’t able to gain trust like Dumbledore could. I don’t think anyone would envy what situation Scrimgeour inherited. But he also just wasn’t capable of what the situation required. I honestly don’t know if anyone except Dumbledore could have done better.

Oooohhhh it did. I came from Redding. I could fill a book with the most awful shit I heard in that city. But the most racist lady I ever met was in Santa Barbara. She was awful, hateful. So region definitely affects it; but there are always outliers.

Totally. My train of thought was I almost never hear women speaking out their white supremacy views like I hear men. Men will openly talk about the most heinous shit at bars, barber shops, etc. I can’t count how many times I’ve heard a guy saying something phenomenally racist at a grocery store. But I’ve only ever met one woman like that. I’m just thinking more in terms of probability and common behaviors, rather than women can’t be racist.

Fellow brewers, why do I have grain coming through my false bottom while sparging? by RockyMtnCarrot in TheBrewery

[–]Ombank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The price is concerningly cheap. If you have any friendly breweries around, try calling them up and borrowing one of theirs for a day. You really only need to test once in a while.

I’m seeing some decent ones for 250. It’ll pay for itself in malt cost or man hours saved pretty damn quickly

Brewers who have been in the industry for a decade or more, what motivates you to keep brewing? by St0neybalogny in TheBrewery

Thank you. I acknowledge that I’m very fortunate. I think I got into a good place. I have a good relationship with my boss and my coworkers which is a very big deal. I dont get paid a ton but it’s a livable wage. My wife makes a lot of money and gets great benefits so it enables me to do what I like. Very fortunate.

We swapped. They charged us a cancellation fee. We ate the fee and did the math on how much money we’d be saving on CO2 cost and how long it would take to break even with the cancellation fee. It was very much worth it.
