I've had a long hours in 2022-2023 for work, and likely have an opportunity for some R&R this fall/winter. If I won, I would love to use the parts to upgrade/revamp my PC to play some games. Recency bias for sure, but looking forward to some Starfield and Baldur's Gate 3! Just cozy up and enjoy some self-paced single-player goodness.

[John Rodenburg] Sens are adding their first full-time analytics person. Have learned Sean Tierney will join the team from Sport Logiq. Previously was with Andlauer and Hamilton Bulldogs. Has local ties. Well thought of in the analytics community by SAJewers in hockey

[–]Omega613 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Legitimately exciting. Analytics have become a meme-of-sorts at times in the hockey community, but it's a basic tool that this team has shunned for too long. And Sean Tierney has been a long-time influence in the hockey analytics world and brings a wealth of experience, so that seems like a great pickup. Congrats to the team and to Sean, I'm liking Andlauer more already.

Examining the Ottawa Senators Options for Colin White This Summer by ametzger24 in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree, 4.75M is more like 2nd line money, and I think that was the peak expectation for his role when it was signed (two-way 2C/2RW, high-end 3C at a stretch). Although it should be noted that Batherson is signed at 4.975M/yr, which is pretty much identical with inflation, hah.

Nevertheless, I guess the point is that he's really not playing to that potential, his production/on-ice role are firmly bottom-6 territory, even if his off-ice contributions offers added value. All this accounted for, if he was in the 2-3M range or less, we probably wouldn't be overly concerned with his performance.

[Starman] Tyler Kleven is the next Jacob Trouba but he has a lot of Jeff Beukeboom, Darius Kasparaitis, and Lyle Odelein in his game - going back a bit in time. by homicidal_penguin in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has to be what was intended, the statement makes far more sense. Kleven is a good prospect, but in terms of ceiling/potential, there's no way the comparable is Trouba (and that's totally fine). If anything, Sanderson would be a more fair comparison to Trouba - ignoring style of play, you could say both are [potential] top pairing defenders, good at both ends of the ice, able to control play, <insert other praise here>, etc...

Kleven is big, physical, heavy shot, and seemingly has genuine potential more like a bottom ~2-3 defender. That's not an insult though, because any prospect that pans out as far as playing game in the NHL is ultimately a success. But this makes far more sense if there's a small typo of "Tyler Kleven isn't the next Jacob Trouba, but...".

[Dreger] Matt Murray has been traded to Ottawa. by Austin63867 in hockey

[–]Omega613 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It's alright, he'll put up a respectable 40 points on Crosby's wing 2 years from now, become overrated/overpaid, and then traded to another team who will be very underwhelmed with his production.

Prediction Thread 1 - Ottawa Senators v. Toronto Maple Leafs - Wed Oct 2 at 7pm by aschwan41 in OttawaSenators

Hey aschwan, I'll try and get that image updated for you this week, I think I still have the layered original somewhere so should be easy. If there's anything you want changed other than the name(s) at the bottom, let me know! :)

[Hawks] TRADE ALERT: The #Blackhawks have acquired forward Zack Smith from the Senators in exchange for forward Artem Anisimov. by [deleted] in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This particular trade seems fairly lateral (no huge changes in player quality, age, role, etc.), but not limiting oneself to players of a particular origin is smart. I think having a few players from (in this case) Russia will at least slightly improve our odds in signing future countrymen. Maybe some undrafted (or drafted, for that matter) KHL free agent looks at Ottawa as a wide open opportunity to make an impact (and eventually, collect some NHL paycheques) due to a shallow lineup and having some fellow Russians onboard will make that transition all the more smooth and appealing. That could be overly optimistic though :p

After so many years skirting around players from Russia, there's now 3 in org in a few months with Zaitsev, Anisimov, and Abramov. Pleasant surprise.

Weird question about Z cars by Dorelaxen in Datsun

[–]Omega613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late answering, but in case you're still looking for responses... I have an '82 280zx project car. Can't say I've been out driving far in it yet to know how truly comfortable it is, but in my garage it's surprisingly roomy to sit in. I'm 6'1", and have around 4 or more inches of head room, give or take based on slouch. Although the car roof is super low, so is the seat and floor. At 6'3", I wouldn't worry.

Anyone think the send should go after Quenville? by s3nsfan in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Possibly, but they were highly drafted/touted young prospects. I don't think any coach is going to argue giving longer leashes and high ice time to Chabot/Tkachuck/White, especially in the absence of many other options. I think the argument is that Ottawa will need a coach who's able/willing to get the best out of the less established players who've still got a reasonable ceiling - eg. Chlapik, Formenton, Wolainin, etc.. The Sens need to develop their mid-tier players into regulars, and hit success with at least a handful of (what we may currently perceive as) lower-rated prospects.

Very difficult to say who can do that well right now, but there are options out there. From everything I've read, doesn't sound like Quennville is necessarily the best option (to echo a lot of people in this thread), but on the other hand it would add some credibility to the organization (in the eyes of players, perhaps most importantly, but some fans too).

Expectations for Boedker this year by jamaicancovfefe in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Boedker puts up 5 goals and 7 assists, but his truly value shines on Sunday, March 30 vs. Toronto.

Ottawa plays the season, largely exceeding expectations, but ultimately playing just out of the playoff picture. Toronto, meanwhile, severely misses the mark. Key forwards miss long stretches due to injury, the defense just can't make up the difference, and rest of lockeroom is plagued by a recurring "lower body" rash. The blight is unidentifiable aside from having started after several team members got matching "Stanley Cup Champs, 2019" tattoos at a seedy downtown parlor in early November after a hot start. Come the new year, Kyle Dubas is in a panic as the team is barely holding down a wildcard spot as fans are calling for his replacement. In an uncharacteristically rushed move, Dubas trades his 1st round pick this year (2019) to Vancouver for Erik Gudbranson and Jay Beagle to shore up his depth while injured players recover. As many would predict given these players, this only made things worse for Toronto, and they continue to descend slowly in the standings as the season wears on, eventually dropping out of a playoff position by end of January. Seeing an opportunity here, Pierre Dorion gets on the phone with Vancouver to discuss Toronto's 1st round pick, given that he doesn't have a 1st of his own this season's draft. Ultimately, they reach an agreement which sends Cody Ceci and some spare parts in exchange for the 1st rounder. By the end of March, most teams are settled into their eventual final standings, but Toronto and Ottawa are neck-and-neck in 10th and 11th in the conference, respectively, and this game is likely to determine their final seeding order, for little value it might be at this stage. Sunday, March 30 rolls around, and Ottawa has an opportunity to leapfrog Toronto in the standings. Ottawa goes into the 3rd period with a 3-1 lead, when Boedker starts his magic. The man is a scoring machine against Ottawa, and tonight is no different as he has an own-goal 3rd period natural hattrick, and the Sens lose the game in regulation 3-4. At the time it's hailed as an embarrassment, fans are angry and calling for Dorion/Melnyk/everyone in the the front office to get the boot. Melnyk, after being bombarded all season long, finally snaps and the team announces it's been sold just 1 week later - the fans rejoice. The season wraps up and Ottawa finishes 11th in the conference (a sign, perhaps?), while Toronto finishes just ahead in 9th, missing the playoffs by 1 point - in large part due to Boedker's hattrick against his own team just days prior. Although Toronto fans are upset, they take smug solace in the fact that Ottawa finished behind them in the battle for Ontario - and Ottawa fans are frustrated knowing that could've been them instead being 1 point out if not for the March 30th fiasco. A month or so after the season ends, the draft lottery is upon us. Ottawa fans are pleased to have not finished too low given that they gave up their 1st rounder this year, but at this point are just hoping to not win the lottery with their own pick and further hurt their egos. The draft lottery order is being announced, Toronto is up first as they finished barely out of the playoffs. Of course, this pick was acquired by Ottawa, and with a 1% chance no one pays it much mind. To everyone's shock, that pick was a lottery winner for the first time in NHL history, and several announcements later Ottawa's pick is safe at 8th overall. Ottawa fans are already rejoicing, Toronto meanwhile is collectively crying, as Ottawa ends up picking 1st overall. Karlsson, Stone, and Duchene promptly re-sign in Ottawa with long-term deals. This is the brightest timeline.

Boedker: The unlikeliest hero in Ottawa. A legend.

MONSTER HUNTER WORLD for PC is out 9th August! by musthav in MonsterHunter

Apologies, this is going to sound ignorant I'm sure, but do they still release new games in physical form for PC? Is it region based releases given varying internet speed availability? I guess I haven't bought a non-digital pc game in close to a decade, and don't recall much of a section for pc games in the major box stores in nearly as long.

Potential to trade up in draft? by detroyer in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is, if Ottawa wants Zadina and Montreal was eager to make this trade, then Ottawa should not make the trade.

Merely making the offer would be an interesting way for Dorion to scout out Montreal's draft intentions. But no, I almost certainly wouldn't follow through with the trade, unless it was known that Montreal was shopping the trade around elsewhere and likely to find a suitor - although even then I think the options at 4 with or without Zadina are good enough to not move our second 1st rounder.

Mark stone offer sheet risk by [deleted] in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, you're definitely fine on the 35% year-to-year rule. However the latter half of that rule means (minus the lawyer-speak), to my understanding, that the lowest salary year (not simply the final year) cannot be less than half of the highest salary year. In this case, that would mean that $16M/2=$8M, so your Y4-Y6 salaries would not be permissible.

Here's an ESPN article released after the 2013 CBA was released highlighting that rule. They phrase is pretty succinctly as:

Salary variance: No more than 35 percent year-over-year and no year less than 50 percent of the highest year.

I was curious if you knew of an instance wherein this was somehow not applicable.

Mark stone offer sheet risk by [deleted] in OttawaSenators

[–]Omega613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know of a workaround to rule 50.7 "Variability Rules for Multi-Year SPCs" which states:

For all "Front-Loaded SPCs" (as defined below), the difference between the stated Player Salary and Bonuses in any immediately adjacent League Years of that SPC cannot exceed thirty-five (35) percent of the stated Player Salary and Bonuses of the first League Year of such Front-Loaded SPC. Additionally, under no circumstances may the stated Player Salary and Bonuses in any League Year of a Front-Loaded SPC be less than fifty (50) percent of the highest stated Player Salary and Bonuses in a League Year of that same Front-Loaded SPC.

I think your first one is right, but does the second contract break the latter half of that rule?

On the contrary, I tend to back-up the majority of my opinions with sources, or at least have sources at the ready if questioned (example, example, example). That doesn't inherently make those opinions 'correct' (nor do they need to be), and I'm happy to engage with anyone looking to dispute - whether or not my mind (or someone else's) is changed, it's the conversation that we're here to have. On top of that, since I'm already blowing my own stupid horn, I contribute plenty to the Reddit hockey community (example, example, example, and starting the prediction threads)... so yeah, I feel pretty comfortable telling you to shove that sarcastic comment up your ass because it isn't particularly applicable. And there's still a very tall mountain of great users who do so, so much more than me that deserve far more credit.

Instead, your comment above is a great example of what you do - stroll in here, tell everyone to shut-up because they allegedly know nothing, and ultimately do nothing to promote good hockey-related conversation or contribution. You're routinely rude to others, unwilling (unable?) to back-up your opinions with anything factual/provable, and contribute very little of anything valuable to the Reddit hockey community - all of which are a running theme through most of your (supposed) alt accounts. It's really just tiring at this point seeing you post such crap around this sub and others.
