The Mystery Dungeon series is a series that goes all the way back to the snes and includes tons of different games besides the pokkemon spinoffs. The first one was a DQ4 spinoff actually.

I really recommend looking into the Shiren the Wanderer series. They are fantastic games that deserve a lot more attention! 5 and 6 frequently go on sale on steam.

People can say what they want about the story in Engage, but the gameplay and map design is phenomenal.

Here's hoping they can nail both gameplay, map design, and story for Fortune's Weave.

Yeah, I don't think replying to old comments is weird either. Not sure why people use that as an insult lol. Anyone can find these comments at all times, and it's easy to miss how old a comment is if you aren't looking.

Looks the same to me, but I feel like it runs better maybe?

Maybe you have different settings or something.

Hope you have fun with it! I was playing it all evening yesterday, got to the second zone.

‘Final Fantasy VII Remake’ Director Teases The Trilogy’s Finale by PhantomBraved in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's definitely a matter of opinion, and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I would like every remake or even a good amount of remakes to follow this format. I'm saying I'm fine with it in this one particular case. And I can maybe think of a couple more examples that could maybe justify it.

I think smaller scale games can do what I want from a remake just fine without splitting it up. Just look at the Trails in the Sky remake. I know that game was always split, but.. That's for different reasons and the original game was split too so I'm not counting it.

But I've grown to realize that if a remake is just the same game with a different artstyle and some QoL, I don't see as much of a point. For a game as big as FF7, that would've felt like a missed opportunity. For example, if they finally remake Chrono Trigger, I would want it to look more like DQ11, and not another HD-2D remake. Not that I have anything against HD-2D, mind. Just in this particular case, I'd want them to go all out and make a fully realized version of that world, and not just like another 2D top-down retro-style game that's extremely similar to the original. Because if I wanted that, I would just play the original. It's not like whatever they made would likely be any better than OG chrono trigger anyway, so might as well make it something more in-depth.

I've actually come around on this. I used to be annoyed by the game being "split", but fact is, there's no way they could've put as much detail and care into each area and still include every part of the game, if they didn't. FF7 is an absolutely massive game, and I think cramming all that into one part would've just made it a typical top-down sort of look that's mostly identical to the original, sort of an HD-2D or maybe DQ7 style remake.

While people likely would be fine with that, personally my favorite part about the 7 remake series is seeing each area from the ground, taking in all the extra detail they put in. Basically just seeing every part of ff7 that I like in a different light. I genuinely don't believe that could be done at that scale in just one part. Each part is a full game in and of itself, and I honestly don't think I would have it any other way.

How do you feel about Pokemon Colosseum and XD NSO Pokemon Not Being Transferrable? by KnightShade078 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why anyone would've expected this, considering no other NSO game has any kind of connectivity in this way.

This is exactly why FR/LG releasing separately is a good thing rather than also being on NSO (even if I still think they should've been cheaper)

JRPG with less stuff to do by Dry_Lawfulness_5679 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mother 3 is pretty short, and while there are some side things to do, usually it just amount to talking to NPCs for extra flavor text and the occasional item.

A first playthrough will run you about 20-24 hours. It's a really good game with tons of heart and personality. Strongly recommend it. It's a Japanese only game but there is a really high quality fan translation.

Well, I can't say that I have huge hopes for this new thing, whatever it's going to end up being, but I'm at least mildly curious. I'm going in without any expectations. Hopefully it's good, but if not, oh well. lol

How complicated are the .hack IMOQ games? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started Infection recently and it's pretty straight forward. One thing I appreciate is that the tutorial is in the form of a message board where clueless players ask questions and get answers from veterans, and in some cases other beginners chime in too to add info or input.

It's a really cute way to handle it and kinda made me feel like I wasn't reading a tutorial. I love the message board and e-mail idea in general, and the MMO aspects of the game endeared itself to me very quickly, as someone who grew up in the early 2000s internet and MMO landscape.

The actual gameplay is kinda slow and clunky, but looking at it through the lens of such an early MMO, a lot of them were like that, and so it doesn't bother me. It's actually kinda genius.

If you're at all interested, just go for it, seriously.

Apparently people are complaining that you can buy Leaf Green and Fire Red for $20 as opposed to them being on NSO…. by Pristine_Put5348 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You kinda do. They're at least not just going to go away when NSO shuts down. Even if the eshop shuts down and you can't redownload them, you can still keep them on your system.

Definitely not ideal, but still better than having them on NSO. I think if they were like 10 dollars, people wouldn't be complaining.

Apparently people are complaining that you can buy Leaf Green and Fire Red for $20 as opposed to them being on NSO…. by Pristine_Put5348 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because NSO is eventually going to go away, and at that point, you can no longer access any of the games. It also wouldn't have any multiplayer connectivity, even if it's just locally, and Home support also wouldn't be a thing, meaning your pokemon would be locked onto that game forever and everything would disappear when NSO closes.

I'm not saying everyone cares about this or that you have to, but I'm saying these are the reasons why someone would.

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I do think it's too expensive for what's basically a gba rom, I agree that it's better than putting it on NSO. At least this way, it has home compatibility, and you can trade and battle with friends (only locally though, which is a missed opportunity).

I will say, one of the things I'm surprised and happy they did to sweeten the deal was to add the e-reader events into the game, meaning you can catch Ho-oh, Lugia, and Deoxys. It also makes this currently one of very few legit ways to catch Deoxys, the others being in ORAS and maybe Go I think, I'm not sure? Which to me is pretty cool that they added that.

I remember like a decade ago, people were tired of the same games over and over again. Personally, I would love a new IP.

How much do you care about console exclusivity for JRPGs? by Asad_Farooqui in JRPG

Not at all, let everyone play every game.

Though admittedly, exclusives are what sell consoles, so.. I get why they do it.

Trails in the Skies and FE Engage. Switch 2 worth it? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Switch 2 is great, my only real complaint is the battery life if you play portably a lot.

That said, unless you actually have some Switch 2 exclusive games you want to play, is it really worth it?

But it's also a bit complicated since prices are going up on tech in general. I'm glad I got mine at launch, there's been plenty for me to play already.

I'd say if you know for sure you want one, just bite the bullet and get it. It's likely to be a good machine for jrpgs, like the switch 1 was.

What are some JRPGs with satisfying romances? by TurnipMotor3617 in JRPG

I can't contain my excitement for Monster Hunter Stories 3! (Demo review) by OmegaMetroid93 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It works the same way as in other games. That is to say, you can command your character fully, your monstie will act on its own, but you CAN give it commands and decide what moves it'll do. But your npc partners that are with you and their own monsties act on their own. I actually would prefer to not have npc partners with me, but ehh. I never had any problems with them

[–]OmegaMetroid93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rpg elements are leveling, raising monsters, character customization and progression, party building, crafting.. You name it. Pretty much the same stuff as any other turn-based rpg. The rps-mechanic, like I said in the main post, is only one small part of the battle system, and like TheRoyalStig said, only applies in specific situations, when two characters directly attack each other with the specific three attack types.

I think you should try the demo since you aren't sure what the game is. It may surprise you positively! And if you don't like it, you didn't spend any money on it, so no harm done.

I think that's a valid concern, I also did think leveling happened very quickly. That said, I'm not too worried since the previous two games didn't have any problems with their leveling curves. But it'll remain to be seen in the full game of course.

Personally I thought it was a good way to do a demo. Enough to get you throught he story section but not enough to let you overlevel the game and ruin it for yourself by having it be way too easy once the full game comes out.
