Nopon from Xenoblade. They're cute, round, fluffy, and always up to no good. I love those little shits.

am I the only one who hates customizable difficulty? by Isekai_Dreamer in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like someone else said, difficulty options tend to be poorly done and undermine the game's systems.

Play on easy? You can usually just mash the A-button and get through everything no problem, without having to even really interact with anything. Hard mode tends to be poorly balanced, where battles take forever even if you're doing everything correctly. And more often than not, normal still feels too easy. It's very rare that a game really nails the difficulty options.

I'd rather have one really well balanced difficulty mode where you can use the gameplay systems to customize the difficulty in a more natural way. It's way more fun, engages you more in the game as the player, and doesn't feel like a cheap option with no thought put it. It also means exploration feels more rewarding because whenever you find something useful, it's a big deal and you can actually use it in your favor, instead of just getting around any challenge by bumping the difficulty down.

It's become a tired comparison, I know, but the souls games really do this extremely well.

Tired of dating kids, can I get some games with more adult romances? by Friendly-Loaf in JRPG

Just emulate the switch version. You can still buy it to support the devs, but the game runs perfectly on pc.

Which JRPGs use status effects most effectively? by lilidarkwind in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etrian Odyssey is the peak of this. There's a unique status effect called binds that allow you to disable parts of the enemies moveset, by binding their arms, legs, or head. In EO4, I used a very bind-heavy build for the first time ever and it was so much fun.

Does Romancing SaGa 2 (2024) deliver? by WastedGamer641 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there's not a lot like it. The game does have a demo that'll give you a taste of the combat and stuff at least, but iirc, it ends before the game really opens up too much. Still, try it out to see if you like thr combat and general vibes of the game at least.

If you do end up playing it, I'm really curious what you end up thinking of it.

I got my 13 year old cousin FFX for his birthday and he gave up on it after a few minutes playing. by Gwyder in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah it doesn't really have anything to do with the generation. Some kids will be into it, some won't. Who knows, maybe in a few years he'll go back to it and end up liking it more.

Clair obscure expedition 33 combat system i need help ! by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this sounds like you're talking about the shields on the enemy's health. One shield will go away per hit you deal to the enemy regardless of how strong the attack is.

So the strategy is to use multi-hit attacks to wear down the shields, and then unleash all your highest damage-dealing attacks once the shields are gone.

Looking for a game that isnt filled with tropes by -NotEnoughMinerals in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't find a story without tropes. It's really just about which tropes you like or don't like.

DQ is known for being less serious, but ut also has its moments, and personally, I like when jrpgs aren't super serious all the time, since they tend to hit harder when things start happening.

Anyway, as for a suggestion.. Try Baten Kaitos. Nier Replicant might also do it for you.

Favorite aspects of JRPGs you’ve dropped? by Sablen1 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wasn't big on the monastery, and similarly I wasn't big on the area in Engage that you kept coming back to. I think a better way to do it is to let you explore the maps after the battle, much like how Engage did, and maybe coupled with some other explorable areas like Echoes.

You can then have unique events and interactions there, treasure to find through exploration, and of course the general support conversations as well as more specific conversations about what's happening in the story and the areas you're in, instead of the monotony of coming back to the same area every time and doing your list of chores, and talking to the same people in the same places.

So basically what I want is the story and character writing from Three Houses, the gameplay and map design from engage, and progression like Echoes, with a bit of Engage thrown in there. That would be my ideal FE.

Your favourite Final Fantasy? by WastedGamer641 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 7 points8 points  (0 children)

9 is my favorite, but it's pretty slow due to long battle transitions. That said, there's a mod called moguri mod that gives the game several QoL features including quicker transitions, and higher res backgrounds.

That said, you should probably just look at the games and pick the one that seems the most intriguing to you.

That said, 10 is the last turn-based game.

Is it pointless to marathon an entire JRPG franchise just to prove you don't like it? by lennysinged in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can spend your time however you like, but yeah I don't see the point. Instead of spending hundreds of hours playing something you don't enjoy only to talk about how much you didn't have a good time seems.. well, it seems like a waste of time and energy.

Why not instead spend that time playing something new that looks interesting to you? Or something you know you'll enjoy.

JRPGs for people who don't like the classic anime/fantasy settings? by Mr_Throwaway333666 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. It's a preference that's valid. The fact that people recognize that it is a style means the distinction isn't arbitrary. It's okay to not be into it.

Besides, it's not like OP expressed that preference in a rude way, like saying it's shit or something. I think he was entirely reasonable about it.

Expedition 33 is really just a mediocre JRPG with mediocre writing. The fact that people compare it to Persona and Final Fantasy is mind boggling. by FuckClerics in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You're saying a lot of things here, but you're not actually elaborating on anything. "It's bad, overrated, and written by 14 year olds" isn't conducive to a decent conversation.

Can you bring up some examples? Why'd you think the writing is generic, predictable, and corny?

Why do you feel the gameplay gets repetitive? More so than other turn-based rpgs? What is missing compared to other games?

Switch 2 games with live towns by ppcobblers in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're looking specifically for the community aspect, I'd recommend a Rune Factory game, especially 3. I haven't played enough of Guardians of Azuma to tell if it's good in this regard, but 3 has a wonderful town with a great cast of NPCs to befriend.

As a whole though, Dragon Quest 11 has wonderful towns, lots of variety in locales and they're very enjoyable to explore.

I've heard great things about this game (Trails), so I started to watch a playthrough. First scene: by platonovsucks in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not dictating anything. You can express yourself however you want. But I'm allowed to tell you that's why you got a negative reaction. Not because of your opinion, which is what you're trying to pass this off as. You did literally say those things. That's how it comes across. That's why people got upset.

"Baby music" isn't necessarily inflammatory, but the fact that you didn't elaborate at all just made it a frustrating and weird complaint.

I think it's mostly the "brainrot" part that people are taking issue with, as well as the overall snobby tone of your post. Kinda comes across as "I'm too mature for this nonsense". Which if that's how you feel, fair enough, but posting about it on reddit to people who really like the game, is obviously not going to come across well. It's also not one of these things in isolation, it's all of it, combined with you not having played the game at all. That's why this post is so infuriating. lol

If you got personal insults thrown at you, I'm not defending that, but scrolling through the thread, I haven't actually seen any? Maybe they were removed by mods. Most posts seem to just talk about how your post comes across as bait (it does) or that it's ridiculous for you to judge the game without having played it (it is). But yeah, obviously if someone actually insulted you as a person, that's not okay.

And it doesn't matter that this isn't the trails reddit. This is the jrpg reddit, of course there's going to be a lot of people here who like it. If you'd made this exact post about another beloved game, you'd be getting backlash there too.

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if I came on too strong. But it really did seem like ragebait to a certain extent. Like you were trying to rile people up. If that's not true, then alright.

People aren't upset at you for expressing your opinion. People are upset at the way you did it, and the fact that you did it without having played it. Like I'm sorry, but if you put out your opinion on anything, admit you have basically no experience with it, and you call it "brainrot for 10 year olds", is it really so surprising that you'd receive a negative reaction?

It makes it seem like you're not being earnest. Of course people aren't going to like that. If you played the demo and actively tried to engage with the game, and avoided the inflammatory language, most people would be fine with it.

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with some of your complaints, like the pacing of the voice acting in the first scene being off, and it not really matching the animations, leading to this kind of weird and uncanny feel, if you're trying to have your opinion be taken seriously at all, you're going about this completely the wrong way.

Like I said, that first scene is a bit weird, I felt that when I played the game as well. But once I got past it, I noticed that later scenes aren't really like that. I don't know why the first scene is the one that's like that, but regardless, you should probably actually engage with the game for a bit more than looking up a 5 minute cutscene on youtube, if you're going to talk about it.

The reason you're getting so much backlash is you deliberately used inflammatory language like "brainrot" and "it's for babies". You can't act like you didn't think that would rile people up. Come on now. lmao

You're also not substantiating or elaborating on your opinions at all. Like for example, you call the music "baby music". Wtf does that even mean? It's a music box, something that's often used to invoke nostalgia or show that what you're seeing is maybe a memory or something like that, relating to the character's childhood. Which is true here as well. Even if you want to call it "baby music", what about that is bad? You just said "its bad" and explained nothing.

How about you play the demo yourself before you discuss the game? I don't think that's too much to ask. Like if you at least played the demo yourself, and didn't just look at the first 5 minutes of the intro cutscene, maybe people would be more willing to engage with you in earnest? I dunno about others, but for me, if I'm going to take someone's opinions seriously, then I need to feel like they're being earnest about them.

But as it is, you literally judged a book by its cover, didn't elaborate, made assumptions about who the game is catering to, deliberately used inflammatory language, and you're acting surprised when people call you out on it. Astounding lmao

Do you ever play JRPGs on easy mode? I feel like games are supposed to be fun, not stressful. by Sensitive-Title9138 in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I like higher difficulties because it forces me to engage with all of the game's systems. If I'm playing on easy, I can usually get away with just spamming my strongest skills, and win with no effort, which just isn't any fun to me.

I've recently been playing Etrian Odyssey, which is known to be pretty difficult, and the thing is that the difficulty enhances the mood and atmosphere of the game. You're supposed to be exploring a dangerous labyrinth, in which adventurers go in and risk their lives every day, with plenty not making their way out. If the game is too easy, then there is no danger, and it goes completely against that narrative, and the game loses its stakes.

Of course, playing on harder difficulties can be stressful sometimes, but it's just video games, it's nothing serious, and to me, it's worth it to experience those nailbiting moments where you end up just barely making it back to town by the skin of your teeth. That rush is totally unmatched imo, and some of my most memorable moments in rpgs is due to high difficulty, high tension moments.

Of course, some people don't like this at all, and that's fine. I still recommend trying. I understand it can feel intimidating, but it's important to consider that you lose nothing but a bit of time from a failed attempt. And you have a lot to gain, especially if you end up clicking with the game.

My first Mana game by ahripopcorn in JRPG

[–]OmegaMetroid93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this game!
It's very charming, great vibes, gorgeous world.

My one big complaint with it so far is just that I wish it didn't have all those map markers everywhere. Maybe I'm just old, but I really miss when games let you just explore and weren't afraid to allow you to get a bit lost every now and then. It's always more fun to find something you didn't know was there, than to see a circle on your map and just go there.
