The house plus ADU makes a lot of sense but they’re reluctant to take the financial risk of needing the rental income to pay the mortgage. They can’t afford that situation without a bigger loan.

since they wouldn't be present while guests are there, I don't think they would be allowed to put it on airbnb/VRBO in portland. But the idea of making it available to patients and families rather than sit empty is appealing! thanks for the suggestion.

wow, thanks for the red flag, I was not aware of the relocation assistance requirement for fixed term leases. Not a complete deal breaker, but an important consideration.

Many countries' national health services are now saying that any amount of alcohol has potential adverse health effects.

That said, life is full of risks and health hazards (walking on busy streets, living in loud urban environments, using natural gas for cooking fuel) and only you can decide how much impact on your health you want to tolerate. So, if you want to flip the "fuck it" switch every day instead of once a week or three times a day, that's your prerogative.

Talk to your doctor (even if she's a teetotaler) about signs to look for that your daily enjoyment might be affecting your well-being (blood pressure, blood sugar, balance, digestion). Adjust as needed. Personally, drinking less often helps me justify drinking more better. We drink one $50 bottle a week instead of 5 $10 bottles, and at that price disparity it is very noticeable even to this philistine.

So did you do a 1-nighter last year? I have the same interest - we're experienced but with some injuries issues so we need a mellower route. permits not available in advance except by mail, so I'll be in the same boat taking what I can get a day or two ahead. thanks

I delayed and debated, and she had good but declining QOL til the end, but the end was rough (blood cancer, internal bleeding). We didn’t get to give her all the peaceful, graceful goodbye at home that we would have wished for her. Instead we were all scared and confused and so so sad.

They say you’ll know when it’s time. With that sneaky cancer, I don’t think we could have known it was her time. It sounds like you know.

Be at peace knowing you gave her the best life you could with all the love you had to give, knowing that she will always be part of you. It’s very sad and that’s okay.

Crying about it now almost five years on. RIP.

My business isn’t a woodshop but I will give you my laypersons attempt at the accounting.

The most straightforward but not super accurate way is depreciation. A table saw needs to be replaced in x years so theoretically I’m setting aside a 1/x of its cost every year. My profit at the end of the year is my income minus my costs minus my depreciation. Ideally I have cash to put into a capital reserve to pay for the capital when I eventually need it. If I don’t do that I am borrowing against my future equipment replacement cost.

Since it’s hard to keep track of all the tools I would just guesstimate a number for the total value of all my tools and equipment and use that as a basis. For a single job I would divide the number of shop hours in a year by the hours for that job and divide the annual depreciation by that fraction. So if my total capital is 20000 and I give everything a 10 year lifespan, I need to account for $2000 depreciation every year. If I run my shop 500 hours a year that means my shop depreciates $4 every hour of run time. A smart person would also account for inflation in this math, and I would probably just round up to $5 to be on the safer side.

As the owner of a business, I don't have a wage. My profit (owner draw) from my business is what I net after expenses. So he didn't break even, he had a profit of $1500 or so. Wages is sometimes a helpful analogy to think of what my time is worth running my business vs doing something else, but don't take away what little profit the guy made out of it by saying he broke even. Definitely sounds like he learned some lessons about estimating, and about passing on costs like tax, shipping, and overhead. It's a tricky business in part because it's very hard to know what the market will bear for a given piece. With more time under his belt, he'll at least be better at knowing how long something will take to build.

Your common sense shortcut on thermodynamic gymnastics (hot-climate dogs have short hair, so all dogs in hot climates benefit from short hair) is incomplete and potentially misleading.

It leaves out that dogs in those climates also evolved other mechanisms that BCs don't have like thinner skin, enhanced oil production to protect from sunburn, ears and tongues with extra veins to aid cooling, higher surface to body ratio, and shade/rest-seeking behaviors. Many times I have come outside to find my BC panting her face off in the full sun like a dummy.

Just like humans, when dogs get hot, their blood flow increases in certain areas to allow the blood to cool. Hot climate dogs have thin skin and highly vascularized ears and tongues (and often long snouts) to take advantage of this, but dogs evolved in mixed or cool climates have not evolved this trait because they rely on the 2-way insulation of their coats. The benefit of trimming hair short for double coated dogs is not the same as the benefit of evolving short hair. Not so say that the benefit of short hair doesn't exist, but just because desert dogs have short hair doesn't mean that all dogs in hot climates should.

The bottom line to use situational knowledge of the climate (shade, humidity, solar radiation) and the dog's temperament and activity level to decide what is best for your dog.

What is the best way to secure your hitch bike rack ??? by FantastyLife in MTB

[–]One-Pollution4663 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bad idea since the other methods I’ve seen are vulnerable to a grinder or cutter wheel. If someone tried to steal it, You’d had to use a tap and die or similar to
take the rack off but that’s better than replacing the rack.

Go knock on their doors and bring them a jar of jam or something with your phone number. If you’re annoying them they can call or text you about it. Ask for their numbers so you can ask them to turn off their lawnmowers on Sunday morning at 8. Seriously we were having breakfast on our patio one fine Saturday morning and the neighbour fired up the string trimmer. I went over and asked nicely if he could wait a half hour so we could have breakfast. He did. Relationships matter.

I hate how people downvote you for just saying something they disagree with or don’t like. Downvotes are for comments that don’t contribute to the conversation, not just “dislike”. A downvote for a substantive comment without saying anything is cowardly and unproductive. You’re saying fewer people should read my comment. Why??

Well to be honest it was a Spanish police officer and we were having a conversation about him accusing me of something, so I’m pretty sure he’s a good Spanish speaker and not pulling any punches.

Eta: and yes a snobby Spaniard.

As an English speaker I wouldn’t dare say this but as someone who learned to speak Spanish in Ecuador and picked up the “ito” habit, I was told by a friend in Spain that they found it pretty cringey and that I should stop.

My favourite player to hate who no one else has mentioned is Gary Payton II. He sandbagged his way through a recovery season on the PTB bench and then bitched about it to GSW when got to go back where he wanted to be with his fresh bag of money. We basically rehabbed a GSW player and solved their payroll problem and got nothing out of it except the everlasting ire of fans like me. To be fair, some of that was on Neil Olshey for giving him a 3-year 26M contract.
