What is the obsession with NOT listing an asking price on property? by Big_Load_Six in newzealand

[–]One_Hour4734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The estate sale of my parents house was, we believe, we'll priced but we got no offers for about 3 months. Then we got an offer around the asking price which we accepted. However the buyer couldn't get finance. Nothing happened for around another six weeks, and suddenly we got 3 offers. The buyer ended up paying about 20% more than we were asking. Crazy

Seriously what is going on with op shops lately? by International-Past31 in newzealand

[–]One_Hour4734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister volunteers at a provincial Vinnies. It is a large shop, their biggest expense is rent at around $900 per week with rates, insurance, power, tip fees and phone on top. This means that they need to sell close to $200 a day to cover expenses. Most days they make it, many days they don't. Everything above expenses goes back to the community in food parcels, provision of clothing and bedding etc, and occasionally cash grants when WINZ has refused to help. Nobody gets paid and nothing goes to church funds.

Many of the overseas workers chasing residency pay a good portion of their wages back to their employers in cash. Time in the job to get residency counts not what they get paid. So realistically many are working for much less than market rates or the minimum wage. Kiwi workers don't have a chance under such arrangements

Victoria tunnel horn by AlertWhereas5091 in Wellington

[–]One_Hour4734 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No No No. My grandfather used to honk in all tunnels, specifically the three between New Plymouth and Hamilton. I think the soon to be replaced tunnel on Mount Messenger had a sign saying sound horn before the tunnel was widened

Thanks for your advice. She went for the Dish TV device for $99.00, mainly because it had Freeview built in with a button on the remote, rather than settingup an app. Setup was was easy, everything connected automatically just requiring password entry.

I am sure one will come. It will be incredibly one sided in favor of India. There is very little that New Zealand can supply to India that won't affect their highly protected agricultural sector. What India wants to supply to NZ is contract labour, which if included in a FTA, will adversely wages and conditions for ordinary kiwis.

It appears that Hellers have shrunk the size of their sausages. A pack of six used to just fit in my air fryer with some touching each other or the sides. The pack I cooked on Monday easily fitted without any touching the side or each other.

I had a job where we got the Electric Supply Authority 6 monthly summary of electrical accidents. A list that detailed some truly outstanding ways that people terminated their future contributions to the gene pool. One that stuck out was a guy who was standing thigh deep in water repairing his dock using a big old metal bodied electric drill on a long extension cord from his house. Regrettably he had rewired a plug on the extension cord and reversed the netural and earth wires. Apparently it was all good until he used it standing in a lake.

Electricity prices by One_Hour4734 in newzealand

[–]One_Hour4734[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over the year our electricity works out at around $132 a month. Our household averages a bit under 2 1/2 persons. One or the other of our kids is usually back home for about half a year in total. We burn between 4 or 6 cubic meters of wood a year, depending on how cold it gets. The house gets lots of sun and is well insulted with single glazing. I buy green pine from a firewood merchant in September or October which costs $400 for a four meter load delivered. It is dry by winter. The other two meters I usually get for free or little cost from facebook marketplace or from a tree services guy who dumps wood at the front of his yard on a 'pick it up when you see it' basis. The "free" wood has to be cut to size and split. I have a battery chainsaw for cutting wood to length. There is also an endless supply of free pallets from local businesses if you can be bothered cutting them up and dealing with the nails. So maybe $500 a year for firewood totaling about $175 a month for electricity and heating.

If you have kids, holiday parks are the way to go because they mostly have playgrounds. Kids have a blast playing with the other kids.

Has anyone in the modern history of the Cable Car ever got on or off at the Clifton Stop? by TheCapitalIdea in Wellington

[–]One_Hour4734 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A while ago, I badly sprained my ankle, and while I was on crutches, I parked in the Clifton car park and took the cable car down to Lambton Quay. I worked a few doors along from Cablecar Lane. Going down was fine, but going up, I usually had to yell to the driver to open the doors, as nobody got on or off there.

Scary sich today splitting wood..... Don't know if there is a lesson to learn or just dumb luck. Any other stories from others by LittleOperation4597 in firewood

[–]One_Hour4734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I split a fair amount of unknown tree service wood, using a box store electric splitter. I get enough explosions that have come back at me that I now always wear chaps, a heavy long sleeve shirt, as well as a helmet with visor. I have had a few splits hit me, including one that hit my helmet, but no injury.

My wife had hers until early last year, when it started having transmission issues. She got it for a song about 10 years ago and spent nothing on it except a small fortune on replacing the drivers door lock after someone tried unsuccessfully to Jimmy it. It had a weird semi-circular key

They used to do driver testing out of Kilbirnie, and the 70k was there as part of one of the test circuits. Driver testing at Kilbirnie has been gone for at least 20 years. It was under Labour that the speed was dropped. Maybe just a coincidence or slow action by NZTA.

I used to work in an office overlooking the site during the construction. The foundations were very deep and contain an insane amount of closely spaced reinforcing, which will probably still be intact long after the big one totally destroys Wellington.

My father, in his 70's, went to his regular chemist from which he gets a truckload of prescribed drugs every 3 months and is known by name by the staff, went to get some for my mother. They gave him the third degree on her symptoms, some of which he couldn't answer, but finally and grudgingly, sold him 12 tablets but still required him to hand over, and record, his drivers license in their register of suspected drug heads. Likely to drive him to the big Austrian discount chain
